What I heard about the janikowski play was that he, as a kicker, is supposed to force the runner towards the middle of the field so that his teammates can make a tackle, but none of his teammates were making an effort, so he did the right thing but his team didn’t make the tackle. Not sure if that’s right, but that’s the explanation I heard from some announcers on that play.

Janikowski actually could've done a bit more but it wasn't too significant. He had "attempted" to slow down the returner by cutting him off (I'm assuming), which would've given his teammates a chance to catch up and perhaps trip him up from behind. Perhaps he was just trying to avoid making that tackle to prevent any sort of injury to himself.

It didn't even matter whether the runner went out of bounds or in! All 43 had to do was stop him. Instead, he went for the flashy "fly through the air smash" which is more fun and fear-inducing and makes more highlight reels. But really getting down to it, his JOB was to do one thing but he did another. That's poor effort by very definition. He wasn't "trying" to do his job; he tried to do something flashy *instead* of his job. You don't agree?
