The All Blacks have always, since I can remember, been my second Team in rugby, always rooting for you guys... You guys are our friends and stood by us even during the apartheid years, referring to the 86 Rebel Tour with Andy Dalton. I`m in no way condoning what happened in those years of course, just using it as an example... I`ve always had massive respect for you guys.. As a Saffa, I have the utmost respect for the AB’s and the great rivalry we share. But man changes are needed with the AB’s. I’ve never seen a AB team be so poor at the basics, it appears they lacking confidence perhaps? Front Row needs some working on, because IMO that’s where you guys are getting beat quite often these days. Most of your loses last year and this year is because you failed to compete upfront and at the breakdown and not being able to deal with the rush defence that teams apply on you. Also, back line looking very flat? Think you guys could improve on your centre combo. That being said I really am empathetic towards the AB’s, was not too long ago when the Boks where in this position and we ranked 7th in the world. I firmly believe the AB’s will bounce back though, but changes need to happen and soon before it’s too late for the changes to have an affect before the WC. Much respect from 🇿🇦

@Wouter Swanepoel You are absolutely right regarding Polynesian discrimination in NZ during the 1970s through to late 1980s. The NZ government instituted a policy of forced deportation targeting Polynesians - and created a special task force to carry it out in a very cruel and humiliating fashion - infamously code-named “dawn raids”. The name speaks for itself. Our PM issue formal apology recently Public attitudes began to shift in the 1990s (when I was teen) and white NZers become more tolerant. During this time Polynesians rapidly began to populate NZ rugby scene. By 1990s and onwards most Polynesian residing in NZ were born and bred - true of ABs Polynesian players: The Lomu’s, Kanos, Saveas, and Nonu’s, to name few- they’re kiwis through and through. NZ racial relations are not great by any objective measure but considering the country’s ugly colonial past, we're getting there, slowly. On a lighter note, the are many white South Africans in NZ and they have really embraced Pacifica and Maori culture and are extremely well liked because of it. Sorry for my rambling history lesson, you didn’t ask for, but you raised some important points on race relations I felt deserved a detailed answer.
Wouter Swanepoel
Wouter Swanepoel Ай бұрын
@Dominic M 1) In 1970 the All Blacks had ONE player of colour only: the great Bryan Williams. Things have therefore clearly changed dramatically. Either New Zealand dropped it's racism, or the islands somehow got exploited. THAT is the REAL context mate. One cannot argue around it. 2) and 3) Amateur or professional era ... makes no difference. It was the same for all. And during that "same" the Boks led the All Blacks on test victories for 70 years until the 90s, when politics beset SA rugby with quotas being enforced, etc, and most former Boks just walking away in disgust from the game in terms of coaching, etc. That's the only reason why Bok rugby suffered for the past let's say 30 years. But that's over now, and the Boks are now clearly on their way to regain their world-wide rugby dominance in probably the next decade.
Dominic M
Dominic M Ай бұрын
@Wouter Swanepoel No offence but your reasoning is faulty, and you afre misinformed on some key points. Let me explain: 1) "12 players in Oceania not NZ-borne" lacks context and is red herring argument (just to get technical). The vast majority of Polynesians (let alone Polynesian All Blacks) spent “formative years” in NZ, whether borne or otherwise. I won’t bore you with the million other reasons why the rugby experiences of our pacific cousins is intrinsically linked to NZ. But rest assured, it’s a combination of their own natural gifts and NZs peculiar rugby environment (fanatical some say) that made them sport stars. The more mundane less exciting truth is Polynesians simply love rugby. They play it more than others (thats why there are so many Oceanic (PI) players in NZ. The fact they are naturally big people, bright, fast doesn't hurt, either. (I feel ethnic Chinese NZers have huge untapped potential in the Rugby arena we must just infect them with a similar fanaticism and athleticism - BUt i disgress) There are thousands of rugby-playing Polynesians in USA too (using your logic of inherent and undeniable oceanic rugby prowess)- but you won’t see them in the RWC or even 3nd divisions Dublin teams (supposing such teams exist). Why? Wrong environment for rugby. Anyway, it’s faulty logic to say the ABS would not be the same team without Oceanic “borne” players - there’s no way to prove this - because we can't travel back in time and swap players to test your theory. Excuse my lengthy and slightly repetitious first response. (BTW, Oceanic players are our secret nuclear weapon muahahaha and why we win hehehe) 2) Not taking anything from your beloved (sometime bedeillved) Bok, but rugby, as we know it only really, began in the super 12 era (professional era). I mean, sure, nations occasionally (very occasionally) played each other - pre-appartite, pre-aviation, pre-TV era- but those days were few and fair between and besides were “amateur” level (in fact calling them amateur is being generous). I don’t think any sane man would use that dinosaur age as some measuring stick for performance and accurate ranking. They would get smoke up today's standards. 3) Rugby of the professional era is the only rational measure by which to discuss past success and surmise future potential, and there have been a range of teams who can claim superior status, the BOKs and ABS being but two. However, based on these metrics I think it’s fair to assume NZ probably nudge you magnificent Bokkie bastados out ever so slightly and are the natural and true heirs of GOAT

That's freakin' dark places let me tell you. I've got no doubt the ABs will bounce back. It seems like they lack a bit of confidence. Well, and game time against the Boks. Losing the SA teams out of Super Rugby has not allowed this group to know what it's like to absorb that kind of physicality for 80mins.

As a huge Bok supporter, I feel for the ABs and NZ supporters, cause we've also been in this position before and it sucks big time. And because of our awesome rugby history with NZ we urge the ABs to just fight through this bad patch and u will come out winning again like we know you're able too. Yes it's nice to win for SA and the Boks, especially the first win vs NZ in SA since 2014 omg lol, but it's not nice to see u struggling too, but it's not going to be for long. We would like to be challenged by a strong AB team instead, but we shouldn't wait too long, who knows next Saturday might be your time lol?

As a Bok supporter I share your sentiments, although I still think ABs are our no 1 opposition and will be for many more years. NZ Rugby has too much talent at every level, they will resurrect soon - I assure you. Just read the comments here - the NZ public is demanding change and they'll get it soon. Even if NZ loses 10 games in a row they'll be our no 1 opposition and always the best game to watch. There's too much history, too many epic clashes that have happened - a bad patch for NZ won't change that. Also, never forget that the Boks went through their worst patch ever 2015-2018; losing to Japan, Italy, Scotland and all the others (and 57-0!) and for the most part NZ supporters were offering positive messages and still making us heartbroken Saffa supporters feel part of it. NZ will always be our no 1 foe, and also leaders in how the game should be played (not right now, but if you look back at the last 25 years of rugby)

Great game, no spite play just hard rugby, no ganging up on the ref for hard play by opponents, I won’t mention the teams name but most will know. This is how great rugby is played both sides respect for each other’s methods. As a Bok supporter I’m sure the AB will get back to the competitive team they always were only in playing more often against top teams can they pick the best and learn each other’s best moves, without these two top teams rugby as a target for the lesser teams will be the loser. Long live the Boks and the AB, now my next wish is that the Wallabies and all the others show that their improvement is not a once off, only for the betterment and excitement of the game rugby.

Watched a movie which portrayed the beginning of the Spring Boks, bloody brilliant and their coach (an Irishman) way back then took them to a win against the English. What film was that if you don’t mind me asking? I’d love to see it. Another interesting bit of history: the Currie Cup (South Africa’s provincial tournament and incidentally the oldest rugby tournament in the world) gets its name from a Scottish merchant named Sir Donald Currie, who gave a golden cup to the British team and told them to give it to the South African team that showed the most heart. From that point on, the South African provincial teams played over the rights to hold this cup. Another pretty cool link to Britain.

SA have a great tight 5, and totally bossed the scrums and turnovers. Fully deserved their win. Out of the two teams the ABs have played recently I will have to rate the Irish as a better attacking team, with more variety and could switch tactics when needed. The Boks were very effective today with a simple game plan that clearly works well for them. Not sure if the Irish can keep their form for another season before the WC but if they do, there’s at least 4 teams that could win it. The ABs need a better platform, and get players running onto passes when recieving, get their aerial game back, just these alone will make a huge difference. Their defense is still quite good, held well under continued pressure. Only way is up from here for the ABs as they have a list of things to put right but can they in time for the WC?. For next weekends game I hope they throw caution to the wind and back themselves like the great teams of the past. No point in going out just to reduce the points differential since that will result the same as today, far too cautious at times. Foster should now blood some new young talent, perfect time to test them at JBerg cauldron.

It is going to be a long and rough year for our men in black. I will be here to support them as always but something needs to change. Our boys lack confidence too many handling errors, indecisiveness and the lack of leadership on the field. I don't know if changing the coach will help our team because it appears that whatever is happening it is a team problem and not just a coach problem. Something is missing from this squad because even from the post match comments it sounds like they have just given up and they have no idea what to do. Well I was here back before they set the standard for the world to chase and now the world has caught up and I will be here supporting them through another dark chapter and wait for them to sort it out. @Thobela Ndlebe agreed...ive been racking my brain as to why it is a law...what advantage would the attacking team get by not being 5? Considering the ball must be passed backwards (...i know that it's extremely debatable these days...this game being a prime example!) I don't get how it would be bad for the game for the attacking team to be up to the scrum...im sure there'll be a reason but I have to admit the game is beginning to be too much about the referees interpretation of the rules...i mean I class myself as something of an officianado of the game and I struggle with the laws, I've noticed recently that when I watch games with casual fans it is increasingly difficult for me to explain the rules to them...especially around whose put in it should be and the like, it seems that each ref has his own interpretation...the game needs to simplify as much as it can or it could lose these casual fans imho
Thobela Ndlebe
Thobela Ndlebe Ай бұрын
@Tom Wilko Pleasure Sir, this game unlike most, is extremely technical, even in certain laws that may appear relatively straight forward you find the interpretation interesting at best and frustrating at worst. At Test level, at the World Cup, you will hear teams saying that they had a meeting with the referee to understand his approach on certain aspects of the game. For instance this law in question, how do you really measure 5 metres? It is not like there is a tape measure to determine compliance. The only way to prevent being penalised is to ensure that you create daylight between yourself (as a backline player) and the scrum. I would scrap this law as I feel it is totally useless and makes no sense.
Tom Wilko
Tom Wilko Ай бұрын
@Thobela Ndlebe thank u so much for ur reply...that was genuinely causing me stress! I never knew that, I presumed the attacking team could form up anywhere up to the back of the scrum...that is the first time in my 48 years that I have seen that particular infringement...i knew I must be missing something but I was honestly thinking that the ref must have had a complete brain freeze and got mixed up who had the put in (not that that would have made sense in any way but I was at a loss) You live and learn
Thobela Ndlebe
Thobela Ndlebe Ай бұрын
@Tom Wilko All the back line players except for the two scrum halves, must remain behind the offside line which is 5m behind the hindmost foot in the scrum until the scrum ends. Damian de Allende was adjudged to have been less than the requisite 5m. Listen to the ref point this out. It is not enough just be behind the scrum. As a pro player it is incumbent upon you to put daylight between yourself and the last man on the scrum.

Standing still and just passing the ball across the field as fast as possible seemed like a desperate strategy from a weakening team. I remember when the ABs would read the game and react as required. Forcing a strategy no matter what is pretty one dimensional. And why there're not committing more forwards to the break down when we have the ball is just crazy. Our turn over count at the break down has been shocking for the last 3 years.

Congratulations South Africa on a dominate victory. The mighty All Blacks in all sorts. I’ve seen this before in the 90s, I hope this won’t be as bad. Generation millennial, less TikTok, Insta, Facebook, pouting lips and coke, get in amongst it and burn the midnight oil.
