Highlights from #9 Iowa Hawkeyes @ #6 North Carolina Tar Heels Men's Basketball Controversy 1/7/1989

Iowa made a huge statement in Chapel Hill with a close victory over the #6 Tar Heels. Hawks used aggressive offensive rebounding and 23 points from Roy Marble to pull the upset. Late in the game, Marble sank a free throw with 11 seconds left to put the Hawks up by one. However, it appeared that Ed Horton, who missed two key free throws down the stretch, was the Iowa player originally fouled.
B.J. Armstrong and Horton added 21 points each for the Hawkeyes. Horton also had 19 rebounds. Freshman Ray Thompson had 19 points.
At the NCAA Tournament, Hawks would lose in the 2nd Round as a 4-seed, and UNC would lose to Michigan in Sweet Sixteen as a 2-seed.

Thompson would’ve been an all time great. Marble was very convincing. That couldn’t happen today

Yes, the broadcast even said it could be reviewed, but they didn't do that. Kind of glad he missed one, as you would expect Horton to have made 1 of 2 of those as well.

I remember watching this as a kid. NC was loaded with talent, such a great Iowa win. BJ, Marble, Ed and others were so fun to watch.
