Reality Check: I consider myself a typical working class pensioner here in South Yorkshire. I get the full state pension of over £1000 per four weeks, with this I get almost the same from my drop down private pension every month My wife gets almost the same. Mortgage has long since been paid off, we have no debt. We have two cars. We take a holiday every year. Our expenditure is considerably less that our income. My wife has the heating and hot water on all day and every day. We have never been so well off! I really don’t need any help paying for winter fuel. I prefer the money spent on the NHS etc.

Yes, you’re right. I just miss out on the winter fuel as I get full state pension and like you I’m glad that some of the poorer pensioners who for some reason or other haven’t taken up pension credit now get it . I used to be out and about in community and believe me there are some very very rich pensioners and some very proud poor ones and I used to tell them they were entitled but they were suspicious of any help, I’m glad this is changing .

If the withdrawal of universal winter fuel payments results in hundreds of thousands of eligible pensioners signing up for pension credit that they are rightfully owed and getting the boost in quality of life that goes along with it then GOOD! If that wipes out the saving? Can't say i care. That sounds to me like the money being distributed to where it is most needed. The Conservatives had 14 years to get that money into the hands of the poorest pensioners, but they failed to get it done. Crowing about there being so many people not signed up to pension credit, immediately after your government, is not a win.

That wilth pension credit and next year's pension incease pensioners will as a whole better off under Labour than they were under the Tories. That she wants investment in the NHS etc but she has no clue how to raise the money. She wants all the benefits of Labour investment in NHS, housing etc, but can not pay for it as she would rule out the Labour tax rises. Either meaning more national debt, leading to more austerity cuts, or she simiply is taking potshots without a clear knowledge of how to pay for investment. Tories oppose the winter fuel allowance cuts but refuse to rule out keeping them when/if they are next in power. He also points out very clearly to her any unpoular policies are a result of the mess of 14 years of Tory government. What she doesn't like is the fact he constantly reminds them every difficult choice being made now is because the Tories have decimated Britain. What Starmer does is paint a faileed Tory party that wants the benefits of British investment without the plans or money to make it happen. A Tory party that is angry about pensioners treatment, but with a leader that does not believe in the winter fuel allowance, a party that says the triple lock is unsustainable, and which refuses to commit to reinstating the allowance to those who will lose it. I am a 27 year old Brit from Nottinghamshire. Brexit has literally made the past 4 years of my life a misery. I thought naively it would be relatively straight forward to move to Italy post Brexit only to discover that any other visa other than a spouse visa is almost impossible. Brexit means my qualifications obtained in the UK are worth nothing without complex accreditation in the EU member state if I want to work there, not to mention the damage particularly caused for small businesses in exporting to Europe. And when it comes to exporting between GB and NI, let’s not even go there as the DUP have done more for a unified Ireland than Sinn Fein in over 100 years. Brexit freedoms she claims, to me it feels like I’m imprisoned as a result of old aged pensioners.

Pensioners don't work, they don't pay income tax, they don't pay national insurance. They generally don't have mortgages and they generally don't pay rent. They get free TV licences, free bus passes, winter fuel allowances, and a plethora of concessionary fares wherever they go. They also have an abundance of charities dedicated to their needs and state services to ensure they have a good standard of living. It's no surprise then that most pensioners have disposable incomes that would embarrass someone in full-time employment. Yet their demands for more and more of other people's money never ends. I am starting to think today's seniors are the most entitled generation ever to walk the earth.

@@Paul-je7bo pensioners are not all the same. While some will be poor. Many in this country don't pay a mortgage because they got to buy houses on the cheap. An opportunity younger people won't get (unless labour do manage to build lots of houses). Have generous defined benefits pension payments that again younger people won't get. Yet on top of this, they get handouts for utilities. I know because my parents fall into the category of people that definitely don't need taxpayer help. The whole policy from labour could have been designed better but on the whole taking away the winter fuel payments is correct. There are plenty of working people that need to use food banks. Don't see the Tory concern for them
