Highlights Start of Part 1 Video Oxford Canal I walk in 2010 The Oxford Canal starts by the River Thames in Oxford The picturesque Oxford Canal meanders slowly through the countryside, The canal takes you from the beautiful university city of Oxford to the three spires of Coventry City is a long-distance route, following the towpath for 77 miles 120 km long from Oxford to Hawkesbury and has 46 lock (locks 2 to 7 at Hillmorton are in pairs). There is one branch (Duke's Cut Branch), which runs from just below Duke's Lock No 44 to the Thames. The Oxford Canal actually connects with the River Thames at two points in the city - from the river by Oxford Railway Station in the centre of the city, and also just outside the city boundaries at the Duke's Cut
The stretch between Napton Junction and Braunston, where the Oxford Canal shares its route with the modern-day Grand Union Canal, it then branched off to Ruby on to Hawkesbury Junction City Coventry. But the southern section between Napton and Oxford remains remarkably unspoilt and offers an evocative insight into canal life as it would have been two centuries ago. Trade began to seriously decline on the Oxford after World War II, but commerce continued well into the 1960s. It was opened in sections between 1774 and 1790 with the purpose of bringing coal from the City Coventry coalfields to City Oxford and the River Thames. The Oxford Canal starts by the River Thames in Oxford and runs for 77 miles, mainly through quiet rolling countryside, to near Coventry where it connects with the midlands canal system. At one time it was the main transport route from the midlands to the south of England and it is now one of the most beautiful and popular cruising canals.
The Oxford Canal is a 78-mile narrow canal in central England linking Oxford with Bedworth via Banbury and Rugby. Completed in 1790, it connects to the River Thames at Oxford and is integrated with the Grand Union Canal-combined for 5 miles close to the villages of Braunston and Napton-on-the-Hill,

Wolvercote is a village that is part of the City of Oxford, England. It is about 3 miles northwest of the city centre, on the northern edge of Wolvercote Common, which is itself north of Port Meadow and adjoins the River Thames.
