Doe Maar was the biggest band in Dutch music history. It was a Dutch language Reggae/Ska band with often pretty serious or controversial lyrics on things like drugs, also the bad, promiscuity, nuclear war, among songs about love and girls. But despite already being in their thirties the singer/bass player (not the one who sings this song) and the singer/keyboard player had a boyband appeal. A Beatlemania emerged, the girl fanbase went from 18 to 16 to 13 and then the younger sisters, while the guys became less openly fan. So they ended up playing for thousands of girls in some improvised venues like cattle auction halls who were all screaming the lyrics they were far too young for to really understand word for word, except all those 11-year olds who fainted, and then often got attented to by the band members afterwards. Counterproductive probably, but they were just genuinely nice guys. They were in steady relationships with women of their own age and then some 12-year old girl would be out in the rain in front of their window at night and they would drive them home. There are hundreds of thousands Dutch women who once had a crush on one of those two band members, and most of female audience in this video probably had. So it got a bit uncomfortable, they were just too good a band and too old to be a boyband. They quit, the absolute headline of all the media that day, and probably to the relief of many parents. It seems a sad story, a band killed by their own fans, but these girls are my generation and I look a bit different at it. I've known them in their twenties and they all stil knew a good bass line and a proper reggae drummer when they hear one. Those girls had the privilege of having the crush on boyband experience with good music and good lyrics, not the slick, commercial nothingness that usually exploits teenage girl's hormones.

Very true, they were/are quality. You still see the members pop up in all kinds of other projects. Other bands have tried covering their songs and say it's really hard to copy them technically as it's quite intricate but they make it look easy.

Welcome to the genius that is Joost Belinfante. Now how to explain him... Belinfante and Doe Maar Keyboard player Ernst Janzs had been long time friends and in the sixties were in bands together such as CCC Inc.The Slumberland band and The Rumbones. As well as touring together in the backing band of Boudewijn De Groot, which is also where the two of them met Henny Vrienten, who is the bass player in this clip. So in 1978 when Janzs got Doe Maar together it was almost certain that Belinfante would get involved too. But not just yet, it took the departure of original bass player Piet Dekker before Belinfante made his way in. Belinfante being a multi instrumentalist (If you look at the full show, you will see him play Trombone, Violin and guitar) bought himself a Bass and fit right in. So when Henny Vrienten came around to join the band as bass player Belinfante stayed around, played on the all of the band's albums and usually did lead vocals on a couple of tunes, of which "Nederwiet" was the biggest hit. But it was Vrienten's involvement which gave the song it's hit potential, because when the band was in the studio recording the Album "skunk" where Vrienten redid all the bass lines Belinfante played and went "Is this something good?" before playing that bass line which made the song legendary.

These guys had the dub-vibe going... There is so much more to explore. The bass player, Henny Vrienten, is the main guy. And he is such a genius. If you can, try to find translations of their lyrics, they are out of this world. 'Is dit alles' (Is This All There Is?) has a dub vibe and is about a guy who is settled: 'a kid, a house , a car and each other ', but is questioning if this is it. Also check out their collaborations with Herman Brood, another Dutch giant. And look at the audience: in their hey day, those were hot young girls -and you still see that in their eyes. Fantastic stuff.

Doe Maar was famous for this kind of music. Ska music. One of the main singers, Henny Vrienten, passed away last year. This group originated from my city, Tilburg. So proud of that. My mom was a headnurse in the 80s when the father of this singer was in the hospital, mom had to make sure he got the proper care, he was terminally ill, and this band was so popular back then that girls tried to get to the floor in the hospital where his father was just to hope to run into Henny Vrienten. The hospital tried everything to keep the fans outside. It was very frustrating. We in our family knew way before the mainstream media news knew how bad and tenacious the hardcore fans were. Those fans kinda ruined it for the band and all the other normal fans of the band. They made fantastic music. They split up begin of the 80s, but got back together in 2000. My brothers and I and our significant others went to a concert of them.back then....so fantastic. Nostalgia galore 😊❤

I sang this when I was a kid. Didnt had a clue yet. too bad the singer/basist (not that guy that is singing this song), recently past away. Doe Maar was a very fameous ska/reggae/pop/punk band in the 80's. They did quit quite early in the carreer, because the success was killing them. All those crazy people shouting, crying, fainting, it was too much for them. Years later, they had several reunion concerts. The guy singing this song, was more from the background of the band. He wrote some song, but was mainly there for sound editing, playing horns. This song was his and he also did sing it on the album Skunk. Recently the lead vocalist and bass player Hennie Vrienten passed away, so that was the end of Doe Maar. I think this concert might be one of the last performances of the band, if not, the last.
