I am 100% religious, and I love Nightwish's commentary on religion. They have 4 or 5 songs that highlight the irony, hypocrisy, and evils that abuse of religion can cause or bring. It's something that we all need to hear. Faith is personal. You use it to make "yourself" a better person. Once you start using it as a reason for hate, bigotry, and greed, you are not longer religious.

I love this song. To me, the lyrics are very honest. Nightwish is a secular band. I know for a fact that Floor and Troy are atheist. In 2006 Tuomas said that he is "not religious, but an open-minded, thinking individual". He does not consider "religion to be bad, but human interpretation of it."

Hi Martine! You are probabely right about Troy and Floor (not that I know anything about it). But... always remember that a person can start to believe in things at any moment. So a statement is just accurate at the time it is given. So even if you where att Floor's house yesterday and heard her saying that she is an atheist...that can be changed today. I'm not saying this as a Christian, muslim, hinduist or any other religion. Just as a person with an open mind. Much Love to you 💙💛💙

@@martine3293 My point is that it's not possible to say that, "- I know for a fact that Troy and Floor are atheists". It's a statement that never can be a fact. By saying that you know that, you have decided that you know exactly what they believe, in that moment. And you don't. Therefore your statement is always totally irrelevant. Soo just stop saying that you know for a fact what someone else are thinking or believing. This comment are just a message to get you to see things more clearly and to not put yourself in a bad position. Soo it's ment to be helpful, not hateful. Much Love 💙💛💙

Religious history is a sad litany of suppression, oppression, killings and maiming on a grand scale, it's a matter of the record. I agree with Prof. Dawkins and have done, unknowingly, since the age of 5 years old. “Faith can be very very dangerous, and deliberately to implant it into the vulnerable mind of an innocent child is a grievous wrong.” “Religion is about turning untested belief into unshakable truth through the power of institutions and the passage of time.”

If there are gods, but unjust, then you should not want to worship them. If there are no gods, then you will be gone, but will have lived a noble life that will live on in the memories of your loved ones.” ― Marcus Aurelius (Emperor of the Roman Empire from 161 to his death in 180)

@@barneyfontenot1462 The Bible is untrustworthy. The spoken stories about the life of Jesus were written down almost 150 years after the death of Jesus and many of those stories got mixed with old Egyptian legends about Egyptian gods. Jesus probably existed but anything you can read in Bible was probably changed by 150 years of storytelling, misinterpreted, spiced up to be more interesting to listeners etc. Medieval historians very often had wrong facts about events that happened barely 50 years before.

While I might not agree with Aurelius when it comes to matters of the State, that's not a huge surprise considering that he was a Roman emperor and I'm (I guess) a libertarian 😁 However, I am rereading his "Meditations" quite regularly, as many of Aurelius' thoughts resonate with me. There's no doubt that he was a highly intelligent man and, as far as I can tell, a benign ruler (especially compared to some other Roman emperors).
@calanor4130

@@ondrejhanslik9368 Absolutely! Some people seem to forget that the texts were written by human beings, not a metaphysical entity. Even if some sort of divine inspiration was involved, it's still something that was interpreted by mortals. Translations of the original texts is another problem. For instance, the infamous "Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live" has been and is still being debated a lot. Various translations have used different words to refer to "witch", including the Greek _"pharmakos"_ which simply refers to someone with knowledge of herbs - both healing and harmful. As for influences from other religions, Egypt is certainly one source, but also Babylonia. The monotheism of the abrahamic religions was probably influenced by Zoroastrianism, though there are some that suggest that the "heretical" Egyptian pharaoh Akhenaten might have influenced the hebrews. That theory leaves plenty of question marks though, as the powers that were took great effort in trying to completely erase Akhenaten's legacy - even his very name - after his death. Also, Christianity has some similarities with the Roman religion Mithraism. Persecutions by Christians resulted in the destruction of Mithraism by the end of the 4th century CE.

This song was written by Tuomas and Marko. Marko is the main composer, they wrote the lyrics together. It is horrifying there are people who can not accept any criticism towards religion. This song criticizes ORGANIZED religion. There is a lot to criticize. Many are in it for money and power only. I think the easiest way to make people do what you want, including bad, is to make them believe it is God's will. Based on an old interview of Tuomas' wife Johanna, I have reason to believe she has some kind of religious conviction, I would guess close to Lutheran, propably quite liberal. Why is it that the environment you live in affects so much? Why almost all Finns who believe in God are Lutheran? Why doesn't, for example, Allah talk to Finns? Tuomas' grandpa was a priest, and so were many men in the family tree before him. In an old interview the female interviewer, song lyricist Jaana Rinne, provoked Tuomas by saying Nightwish is a religion: "When Nightwish releases a new song the fans read the lyrics as if it was a holy scripture." Tuomas: "I like the way you put it, may I quote you on that? My grandpa is smiling in his grave!" One of my favorite songs criticizing religion is: XTC - "Dear God" Another one: Randy Newman - "God's Song"

Unfortunately some people think that religion should not be questioned or criticised even when religion has quite plainly caused harm and strife. Bad ideas and ideologies should always be called out for what they are. It's a shame people think that they are being personally attacked when their ideas are critised even though ideas should not be considered a part of them. Some members of Nightwish do identify as Atheist and secular and when this song was written Tuomas asked all the members if they were OK with the subject matter. They all agreed. Tribal from Human :II: Nature is on the same vein and could quite easily be Weak Fantasy Pt2. Stay safe.

Then there are differences between the singers. And then there are also preferences between the concerts themselves. But very few people exude hatred. The rest is actually just passionate. I would find it a bit strange when people criticize songs that criticize faith. They want to live out their freedom of belief. This was written after tuomas delved into Dawkins work and I wouldn’t be surprised if this song is influenced by the god delusion. “Male necrocracy” is Christopher hitchens quote (a well atheist and anti theist). As an atheist I’m not scared of dying I imagine it’ll be just like the billions of years before I existed. I like the Dawkins quote from the end of The Greatest Show on Earth "We are going to die, and that makes us the lucky ones Most people are never going to die because they are never going to be born The potential people who could have been here in my place But who will in fact never see the light of day outnumber the sand grains of Sahara Certainly those unborn ghosts include greater poets than Keats, scientists greater than Newton We know this because the set of possible people allowed by our DNA So massively exceeds the set of actual people In the teeth of those stupefying odds it is you and I, in our ordinariness, that are here We privileged few, who won the lottery of birth against all odds How dare we whine at our inevitable return to that prior state From which the vast majority have never stirred?"

I was raised a catholic. When I got to about the age of 15/16, I dumped the catholic church like a sack of hot coals. I realised that the catholic church was nothing more than a greedy business. I still believe in religion, but I practice it in my own way now. This song is fantastic and only tells the truth about organised religion. One of my favourite Nightwish songs.

And "Tribal Poetry" is what Most "Religious" BOOKS are Based On.... Before Writing, Tales were Passed Down by Elders, around a Campfire, to Teach the Young "Morality and Compassion". Like you said, Texts have been EDITED to Serve the Churches, to Keep the Public in FEAR of a Vengeful God..... NOT a God who thinks You're Part of ALL Humanity Equally. Grrrrr! Ok, BTW, this was my 1st listen of this song. I Get It! You Can't Criticize Tuomas for Creating Masterpieces of Music, to Share HIS Feelings & Struggles! He's a GENIUS for the New Age of Aquarius!!! Luv Ya Man!!! Keep Reacting in YOUR Style, UNIQUE!!!!

Love your reaction. Even the pastor at our church (catholic) told us that you should never read the bible as a completely true story, but as tales that have important life lessons in them. How much you believe is true is up to you, but we should always try to be the best version of ourselfs we can be. Respect eacher other and the world we live in.

And for some reason some people use religion as an excuse to make the world worse instead of a better place. It's not religion that's the problem, it's the people.

@@DC88_ Right. And among all the bad shit that people created, religion is one of the worst. Just as easily as it conforts our fear of death, it justifies any acts under the guise of "god's will". Good people will do mostly good things, bad people will do mostly bad things. But if you want a good person to do something really bad BELIEVEING it's good, you need religion.
@calanor4130

@@justatallguy "Ideology" could be used in that same context. In my opinion, it's ideological fanaticism that's the main culprit, regardless of whether we're dealing with a political or a religious ideology. In both cases, atrocious acts have been committed in the name of "The Greater Good".
@justatallguy
@justatallguy 3 жыл бұрын
@@calanor4130 Well, yes. But religion has a unique element of adding post-death mithology. However powerful an ideology is, political or otherwise, it can't lessen death as religion does. Some preach that dying is simply joining god(s), and dying in certain ways are more noble, granting you perks and happiness in an eternal afterlife. Non-religious ideologies can still encourage sacrifice for "a greater good" as you said, but the argument is less persuasive when you can't make a case for an afterlife.

As somebody who is respecting individual faith and believes and as a spiritual person myself, I highly despise and absolutely hate the abuse, pressure and brainwashing which is happening in the name of religion. In History, and today! War, abuse of power, manipulation through fear, supression, forcing obedience and helplessness. Power, wealth, hypocrisy. That is what organized religion was and is about. Its a mockery, a perversion of everything what spirituality of everykind should be about: to empower you, be a anchor, a help, hope. So, I absolutely love this song. Especially today when there is a rise of fanatic streaks in a lot of religions. People who get offended by this song should ask themselves why. If one cant critizise their system of believe, or are not allowed to ask questions, or cant adress evident wrongdoings in past and present, then the alarmbells should be ringing. This song is important!

I am an atheist myself, so I have no issue with this song, to the contrary, but Tuomas himself has mentioned in interviews that he is not an atheist, but more of a secularist, meaning he strongly dislikes organized religions, not religious people and that he believes in A God, but not a specific God of a specific religion.

Or at least organised religion that interfere with state matters, which is a big no-no if you're secular (I am a secular agnostic myself). That being said, he's actually said that he's an agnostic atheist ("Nightwish - We Were Here", p. 38), but that he used to be a Lutheran. Previously, in an interview from around 2007, he called himself a Christian who doesn't know if God exists.

You have to understand that for Tuomas free imagination is priceless. For me this song is against the dogmatic natures of certain religions when you told "This exactly happened who knows when and this exactly you have to take from it!" This is unacceptable for many religious people too.

I am antitheist and really got this song. I do not think it is against faith but the hypocrisy and egoism of those who are "in charge" in those believes and use believers as means to an end.

Because of this song and many of the comments i must think about the movie Stigmata with Patrica Arquette and Gabriel Byrne. When i remember right they mentioned in this movie that there were found fragments of a testament really near to the source and that some people of a congregation send murderer to kill the translators because they don t agree with the statements they translate like God is not the building/church. He is all around us in every stone. The high dignitaries feared that this would destroy the church. Watched it years ago. So many crimes commited in the name of god!

Hate messages? Really? You'd think people listening to Nightwish know this isn't about hating religion in general. It's about organized religion, greed and abuse of power. Tuomas appreciates the poetry of the bible. He uses religious stories in his lyrics (of other songs) the same way he uses stories from mythology. But this song is absolutely about the evil that organized religion brought in the world.

Great reaction. I like how you can see different opinions and respect them 👍 I am not a believer and to me strongest lines are "Mothers milk laced with poison for this newborn" I take that in a way we teach our beliefes to our kids before they are mature enough to make up their own mind. That Works both ways. I was baptised after birth But when i grew up and started questioning My father and Mothers said IT IS OK.. use your brains and your beliefes and what you come up with Will Be ok. My sisters son and his wife just got a baby.. next weekend he gets his name. But won't Be baptised..his parents thought he can do that decision when he is old enough. And i think that is The right way.
