The government is too lenient on criminals. I work in retail, and theft has become a daily occurrence. The rule is that we can't stop thieves or touch them. Even if we report it, the police often do nothing. Sometimes we feel helpless, and shoplifters even mock colleagues. What's more worrying is that children under 18 have started shoplifting. They often come in groups and not only steal but also vandalize the store. I fear that when they grow up, they might start breaking into homes. If this issue isn't addressed, difficult times lie ahead.

Sorry this has happened to you Matt, you're a decent, honest, hard working dealer. I'm a retired removal man who worked for a small family run business (not my family). I turned up for work at 7am one morning in the mid 90s to find that some toe rag had smashed one of the windows in my truck and stolen the fuse box. The knock on effect was that we had to hire a replacement vehicle, which then meant we were running over 2 hours late, so instead of finishing loading by around lunch time, it was mid afternoon. This also delayed the removal company who were moving into the property we were moving out of, so they charged waiting time which was passed on to us. What should have been a 10 or eleven hour day ended up at 17 hours. Hope you get it sorted quickly.

FYI. I had this happen to my 2017 430i Xdrive. They ripped out everything including the sports steering wheel and the car didn't have any signs of break in either. Turns out that all the models that have keyless entry up until 2019ish? continiously send out a signal that can be copied/extended which allows the thieves to open your car + disabling the alarm without breaking in. First order of business should be keeping all the keys (in particular of this generation) in a box/case that blocks/case the signal (tons of these for sale on the web). This won't deter the most committed of carthieves as they will simply smash in the windows but it will deter some. Only way to deal with those is by locking the cars inside/in a garage, since this probably won't be the last time this happens to you. BMW's of this generation are extremely popular among car(parts)thieves so beware and take measures Matt. Best of luck!

He was an engineer so he apparently devised a system that essentially made the shell of the car a live terminal so anyone touching it would then get a shock. It worked, but then he got in trouble with the Dibble because it injured someone (who was messing with the car with bad intentions). Matt, there are products such as Smartwater which you can install in prime vehicles and they not only help to identify car parts that may be taken from the car but also can activate a spray that covers the thief in smartwater, and it also helps to get parts returned to you if they are located by the Police who have the means to identify items that are registered to you. Put the smartwater warning signs around the dealership and they do act as a deterrant. There are other alternatives as well. Just a thought, good luck. The company name is Deter Tech.

Sorry for your loss. You reminded me of Crimewatch UK tv show when you did that video. My only security tips would be to raise the fences/gates to 10 feet tall. Otherwise get privacy blinds for the gaps in your fence so that nobody can look in when no one is around. You would put the privacy blinds up quickly when you leave , then remove it in the morning when you arrive. Their has to be something that can be setup and taken down quick. Goodluck.

Many years ago I was a cop, and on two occasions, I had to attend reports of thefts at a Citroen dealers. Thieves had got into the compound and literally removed the entire front ends off a Relay van and Piccasso. They had taken the batteries, all the battery holders, intercoolers, everything. They must have been there for hours. Real surgical precision. They must have been very talented, and knowledgeable.

Check your CCTV from the last couple of weeks if possible I bet they have paid a visit during opening hours for a quick recce of stock and security, you never know something just might crop up like a white Golf parked nearby during the day.

Always report to police. Is there any chance of zooming in on the Golf's reg?
@Matt437Ай бұрын
As someone who works in insurance, its worth a go. They might be able to find footage elsewhere in the area to find the VRN.
@andrewmoore1136Ай бұрын
@@Matt437 depends on how the footage was recorded. "zooming in" is usually just enlarging the video clip once it's captured and won't generally make things like reg plates clearer, just increases the size of the pixels so makes it really blocky and unreadable (i worked in IT for an insurance company for 15 years and got asked at least once a week by claims handlers to "enhance" CCTV or dashcam footage for them... er, nope! probably won't happen!)

Hi Matt. 4 months ago my nephew had his BMW broken into whilst it was parked on a main road, at night. Ring doorbell captured it from across the road. Less than 30 secs from start to finish to nick his steering wheel, along with the smashed window. My sister's friend has just bought a used BMW. Within no time, it has been broken into, and the steering wheel and info / iDrive system all stolen. Both in West London.

We had a small engineering company and were burgled twice, the second time they smashed some windows, so we replaced them, but left the broken shards, just in case they came back, CID came back and told us to clear it up otherwise the burglars mighy sue us if they cut themselves!!!!!!!! Brilliant justice system.

If that would happen in my home country Romania and it happens that you catch the thief god have mercy for them 😅 but usually the can't walk anymore for few weeks and police wouldn't do nothing to you.but here you get in big trouble if you do something to the criminals,the laws are on their side,😡

Gutted for you Matt. many years ago, I used to own a retail clothing business. I was burgled several times and cleaned out! In the end the best solution was investing in physical deterrents. As you said the thief was in and out in 5 mins and that's all they need to cause havoc! So I'd think about more solutions that will stop any opportunists from getting in and out quickly.

It doesn't stop them unfortunately, I know of a dealer with this type of system that had 2 cars cleared out in less than 3 minutes, police won't get there in 2 minutes to catch them in the act. They're dressed in black with their hoods up in the middle of the night, even with the floodlight blaring you can't see their faces on the CCTV footage.
