Oxymoron...A figure of speech in which apparently contradictory terms appear in conjunction. e.g. When " Car dealer" and "Honest" are used in the same sentence. Although to be fair and I am not trying to make a friend, I am aware that this car dealer does seem to be doing the right thing.

Hi Matt, I imported a 2005 Eclass merc estate to Spain in 2016 from UK. It was 72,000 miles really nice well maintained and previous owner was elderly, so not driven hard. Well after 2 years the rear air suspension failed followed by the air suspension pump and then the brake SBC totally failed. When the SBC failed and the garage wanted a fortune to fix it, I decided no more repairs and to sell it to the garage for €1000. I thought they would fix and sell it on for a profit. Two years later the garage has fixed it but cannot sell it and it has sat on their forecourt for 2 years. These old Mercedes are really nice cars to drive and really well built but some of the repairs are more expensive than the car is worth. I commented on your first S class video to just fix the oil leak and refurb the wheels and get rid, if only it had been that simple. You now have a superb S class that won't pay you back what you have put in. Someone will get a bargain!
@JamesParus

It is common around 300tkm . Expecially if the oil change interval is long. Chain is the first thing to go. Good thing about chain is that is usually gives sound or other symptoms before failing. Belts dont warn you. In most v6 mercedes the chain adjuster is visible through oil filler. So its possible to see how much the adjuster has pushed out.

I seriously study "many" for sale ads for that specific car and specifically look at what work they say has been done so it gives you an idea when those parts are likely to go on high mileage ones, its free info. Then find one and look at the history, some have recently spent loads and others next to nothing.

I have one of these Limo version and I love it. Not only does it have massage seats it has Dynamic Seats which mould themselves around you are you drive and change with the direction you are travelling. Videos etc located in the back with TV also. Never ever use supermarket or cheap diesel it is lethal for injectors, turbo and the engine overall. I always use premium and I achieve 32-34 around town and 42 on motorways even though it is up to 20p more expensive per ltr. For me these are better than any RR, wafts along silently and when you need some poke they have it and they just keeps going. My favourite game is with the tailgating idiots, usually boy racers or SUV's, who I handle by just gently putting my foot down and my S Class takes off and just keeps going and they think they are going backwards. When I kickdown it literally lifts off the road and flies which also shocks these boy racer types who for some reason MUST try to get past you. I am 70 years old by the way lol.

I have a 2006 320 s class. Yes things go wrong and need attention but I do it myself. The engineering is superb- parts come apart and go back together easily and, with a bit of research replacements are not that expensive. For instance, my glow plugs needed replaced. £8 each (Bosch original equipment). The old ones came out easily (try that on a Ford Mondeo) and the whole job was 20-30 mins. In exchange you get a car that is a real pleasure to drive, smooth, quiet and soothing. I have a 500SL as well, but that is a different story!

A decent spec Golf TDI will cost you around £4000 a year in total lease costs over 4 years, for that you could buy an old S500 V8 for the weekends and a 5 year old Toyota, for the weekly slog. Assuming you have space for 2 cars, and don't mind a little hassle when things go wrong.

A timing chain's life span is down to the quality of previous service records and the quality of oil used in the past. High quality oil and servicing at correct service intervals is key. This goes for all brands of cars with timing chains. If serviced correctly the timing chain may never need replacing for the lifetime of the car.

Great videos, nice to see that I am not the only fool in this world. I bought a 2004 S320 sight unseen from an auction for £850. It had 135000 miles, no history, one key and turned out to be the poverty spec model as well. It had also belonged to a smoker and a dog owner. The smell was breath catching. However, a quick post purchase assessment from my local independent came up with new brakes and some suspension parts at £1250. I serviced it myself and got to work with the ozone machine. It now smells respectable and drives as smooth as an eel in a bucket of bogies. I love it, it’s probably in my top three of cars that I have owned. I only planned to have it for the winter but I am rethinking that plan. Keep the videos coming.

Timing chains used to be decent, much the same as Mercedes as a brand. Most of the german marques are still trading on an image of quality that was built up in the 70’s/80’s, sadly that build quality has long since departed. What used to be “over engineered teutonic quality” is now complete bullshit frankly. Its a shame, I’d love a merc, specifically a CLS350 shooting brake, but I just can’t bring myself to part with my hard earned cash knowing what horrors inevitably await.

Neil Rafferty Really?!? 😨 That’s pretty scary! I dismantled my wife’s old C270 last year after it chewed a glow plug tip, 227,000 miles and very little signs of wear on anything else! Unfortunately a valve was bent, piston heavily pitted and side wall scored so sadly had to scrap it all due to someone snapping the plug off at some point in it’s past 😥. I always used to have Honda’s which were wonderful but apart from the rather juicy Legend (best I had from mine was 23mpg as opposed to 50mpg on a run from my E350) they only do smaller engines and I unfortunately to my peril have a bit of a thing for larger engines / more cylinders 😕

I have the same thought about timing belts vs chains. Why use something that has to be replaced vs something that last the life of the car. I have an Audi with a timing chain, no worries then. Except that the chain tensioner is made of cheese or plasticine and has to be replaced. There is one saving grace, at least the engine is pointing forward. Dismantle car place on work bench and the tensioner is accessible.

Do have a weak spot for the S class having owned two now. 89 560 sel and 98 sl500. And yes did spend the full sum of the purchase price in repairs on both - and worth every Penney as we are talking about 25 years of my butt riding on the finest automobiles ever built. I did finally give the SEL away for a BMW540 sedan - a big mistake. But I do still have the wonderful little giant of a car the SL500 claimed as Bruno Sacho's crowning achievement. Once you get everything working it is a piece of art and heaven to drive. The semis (lorries) can be a bit stressful on the highway with the top down as the noise of the tires is right there in your ear the car is so low. A quick stab of throttle gets the 5.0 liter 4valve V8 pulling like a train thru it's magnificent 5 speed automatic and the problem grows swiftly smaller in the rearview. She's beautiful now as I just had the dents pulled today. Bit long here but thanks and like this vlog series.

I still think buying an older prestige car makes sense, particularly if you like comfort and speed, I run two such cars, a Porsche Cayenne twin turbo V8 and a Bentley Contenental GTC. To most people this probably won't make much financial sense, but for me the sheer joy of driving these cars is well worth paying a few quid for. Both are immaculate full history cars, with low mileage, each of them cost a fraction of thier new price. You pays your money and takes your choice. (and don,t bitch too much when a bill comes in)

The timing chain is a widely known issue with these om642 engines, especially the early and most heavy ones (ML, GL, R, S etc). That being said, it is a physical fact that the longer the chain is, the more it will stretch over time. And the chains in all V-engines tend to be relatively long.

I bought a 2006 s350 petrol with all the options on, sunroof, night vision etc, silver with beige leather interior, I searched for ages and travelled all the way to Bristol by train to pick it up. But only two weeks into owning the car, i was severely let down as the airmatic suspension warning light kept coming on and eventually while driving along it completely failed. I had had it investigated at Mercedes and decided to use my 30 day withdrawl option with the finance company and rejected the car as this was giving me the signal this car could start costing me. The dealer was encouraging me to keep the car, but I stuck to it and later purchased a 53 e320 petrol and there were no problems. I also have a e200 kompressor and never given me any problems, just must be something about the S class. I did love mine until if failed and dampened the experience.

From memory Honda motorcycles developed the V4 750 so bad re engine issues they had to sort the issues around timing chain they developed a gear driven system no chains or belts at the time it nearly bankrupted them but customer satisfaction was so low they had to save their reputation , the V4 gear driven cam system is bullet proof

The timing chain on my mate’s 58 plate E Class actually snapped. He was one year into a four year finance deal at the time. He managed to strike some sort of deal with the finance company and it was eventually all fixed as initially the repair costs looked uneconomical.

The bulk of the £3500 repair cost I imagine was labor costs. For those of us in emerging markets where labor is very cheap these cars are worth it.

Just so pleased I can now afford to lease a new one and keep my hands clean. B.t.w. Once all those jobs are done you could theoretically still drive the car for another 5 to 10 years, hopefully without anymore big bills and you would have the knowledge that the work is done and the issues should not reappear in that time. Still sounds tempting.

If you haven't sold this car and I win the lottery I will buy this from you. 🙂🙂 Evidently some Mercedes engines/cars are prone to issues if they are parked on a slope. Initially parts of the engine are starved of oil leading to various failures. Only know this as a mate bought such an example but he has the ability and expertise to fix what would otherwise been a scrapper. He fixed the car and sold it on for a profit.

Similar problem to what plagued BMW V8's. I hated the regular maintenance requirements of timing belt changes but now that would be preferable to a guide and chain issue. I have a friend that all he does is put used V8 BMW engines into cars that need them after replacing all the timing chain parts. He stays busy.

It is common for m272&273 the timing chains & balance shaft need to be replace & both engines need to be remove from the car just to change the faulty parts, this is for petrol engines. Several merc engine have this kind of problems. Idk why this can happen even though Mercedes have made a lot of great engines. IMO the m276 v6 are much reliable than the m272 apart from the rattling noise but it can be fix without needing to remove the engine. once you drive Mercedes S-class you will feel other merc are just normal cars.w221 👍😎

This is the problem with a lot of used cars, people buy them second hand and trade them on once a problem rears it’s head, on the om642 engine it’s usually the oil cooler seals and other big ticket items which make people throw the towel in, it’s like a viscous circle car gets bought then traded then sold again until someone picks up the tab, at least your S class is good for a few years now 👍🏻

Maybe 7000 pounds for a well serviced late 2000s S Class is a good price. Certainly would be in the southern hemisphere. On a side note, just had the timing belt done on my Lexus RX 400h, I was surprised by how well the old belt had stood up, was a bit shiny but when you bend it with the teeth outwards there are no cracks. Reckon it could have done another 150,000 kms.

So, after sorting things out, which would b needed on any car of this age, it’s now cost u $ 7 k. It’s an S class. It looks stunningly elegant & classy. Very well equipped. It looks modern and not old. I’d very happily have this as a daily. For what u have for the $$$. It’s fantastic value. There r many cars that u could have for $ 7 k that r absolute rubbish. This still looks like a very expensive and upmarket vehicle. For $ 7 k. It’s brilliant. This wins. 👍👍

I bough a 7 year old C Class for £7000 - thankfully its' defects were rectified under the garage warranty except for the random cut out which prompted the garage to swap out my car as the cost of repair to them was wiping out their profit. I now suspect the same fault - but a lower incident rate ( which made it even more dangerous).

I would still prefer an engine with a chain rather than a belt. Usually in most cases the chain lasts the life of the engine it's very rare for it to fail although there are some engines that are prone to it like e.g. the BMW N20 but do your research and stay away from those engines.
3 жыл бұрын
Very good channel! Keep up the good work, as for the timing chain, it happens to be more common issue every year as they get older and this engine (M272/M273) was known for it. Let me know if you still need to fix time and date setting issue, I have solution for it. Cheers!

Even at £7k for that car tho, it's alot of motor for the money and if it's sorted from here on in you're on regular service items, which means over time it becomes less eye-watering. I guess the problem is that you probably can't sell it for 7k. Although I don't know if that was ever the point of buying it in the first place?

Honestly I bought a W reg (2000) S class as I love a cheap car and have had about 18/20 cars in the last year. Anyways the S class was a S280 petrol , it only cost me £380 and was the most luxurious car I ever owned and one of the cheapest cars I ever bought. All double glazed windows, engine and gearbox was smooth, the leather was worn on the driver seat but that’s not a bother. The air suspension worked but was slightly faulty as when I stopped at traffic lights it would rise up on the front left side due to a minor leak on the strut. All doors had soft close and all worked, very fast and very good value for money. Bought from a old man who had it on a farm for about 7-8months and used it a handful of times every month to pop to the shops or see his son who lived locally. Even had 6 months mot on it and all the tyres had good tread. I was gobsmacked and got him down from the original asking price of £750 just by being a good haggler, admittedly the paint had faded on the bonnet and it had slight rust on the boot near the handle to open it but hey @£380 I wasn’t complaining. Took me and my partner from Romford all the way to Bath for a long weekend away, with heated seats as comfortable as an expensive sofa, feather light steering, (almost) soundproof interior and a smooth ride, it was a car I dearly loved. Due to it being a daily driver and a bit of a drinker on fuel (10-12Mgp) I eventually had to sell it,I put it on ebay on a 24 hour no reserve bargain car bid and it sold for £400. I also bidded on a 57 reg c class coupe on eBay around the same time I was selling the S Class, and the day after I sold it I went and bought the other car. Won the bid @£800 and got the seller to come down to £400 when I arrived as I haggled so essentially swapped one car for another. Love when things all work out like that and I can gladly say - Yes , I have owned an S Class, even if it was old and cheap Lol 😂
