You're looking at it the wrong way round Matt. For less than £5000, you now have a gorgeous X-Type in a lovely colour combo, with fully sorted mechanicals. You also have full jaguar service history, and a modern classic that will climb in value over time. It's a bit like a fine wine. You might have to lay it down for a while, but it will travel really nicely. It was a good decision in my book. Well worth saving.

Unpopular opinion (probably), but I think the X-Type is better looking than the S-Type, with its large oval shaped grille that looks out of place on that front end. I get that Jaguar was trying to modernise their old-school design, or keep up with the retro trend of the late 90's and early 2000's, but they messed it up on the S-Type.

Totally agree. The x type looks like a modern classic that’s aged really well. The S type is a car that looks like it’s been designed by committee, half of whom are stuck in the past (the grille) & the other half that wanted to compete with the German executive cars of the day. Some heritage grilles transitioned well like BMW’s & Alfa Romeo’s, Jag’s really didn’t.

I owned three X Types all bought new over an eight year period of my life. Lovely cars with a classy interior especially the SE and Sovereign models. Unfortunately this model was incredibly rust prone particularly in the sills and because of the plastic sill covers very poor examples can still look cosmetically good. Numbers on the road are rapidly diminishing as they fail their MOT over structural issues. Glad you saved it, another owner would have run it into the ground and then scrapped it which would have been a travesty.

I love my 2.0D X, I've had XJ's previously and wouldn't swap what I have now, the X feels great to drive and I went for the diesel purely because of the cheap road tax and 50mpg fuel economy, I think the look and feel of these cars has stood the test of time and they have very sexy curves in all the right places, its each to their own as I prefer the saloon visually which is opposite of lots of people but I think both look fantastic, just look at the BMW's or Merc's from the same era and they look dated now in my humble opinion, well done for saving another future classic

Hi Matt, I had the first sovereign estate delivered out Jaguar Cardiff in 2004, I’ve always regretted selling it, very similar to this except the exterior was Silver, but the interior was identical, I went a bit mad on the spec and added nearly £12k’s worth of extras, I know people knock them but I did 65k in it in 20 months and it never let me down and I always felt special every time I drove it, since then, I’ve had XF’s and an F-Type, but I have a real soft spot for it as it was my first Jag. If I had the space I would bite your hand off, but I’m looking for a CLK convertible, another car we wish we didn’t sell. You have done an amazing job, someone will snap it up I’m sure. It’s definitely a car worth saving.. thank you, as you created one of nicest x-types still on the road. Let me know if come across a CLK though … lol

It may have underpinnings but was set up and adapted by jaguar making it all the better. A shame critics panned it for it all.

I can remember my father fighting losing battles with rust on 60s cars which were only just over 5 years old. I had thought that rust nowadays had been conquered thanks to better quality coated steel and/or galvanising but that appears not to be entirely true. To be fair, more modern cars have had a lot of mud traps designed out of them, and their bodywork does seem to last longer. However, as this Jag proves, with many lower body panels now made of some sort of composite which are bolted on, not only have mud traps been thus reinstated so that the structural sills now rust from the outside in, rather than the other way round as of old, but the rust is hidden. I've seen many videos on KZbin revealing the horrors that go unseen on the X and S type, as well as many others including BMWs. No wonder that you see many of these cars stacked up at recycling yards still looking very presentable. The moral is, look very, very carefully underneath before even considering a car of this ilk.

A few months later I bought a 4 month old ex demo 2.1 V6 auto. It was ok but went wrong so many times I traded it for a new Passat after 3 weeks. It’s put me off Jaguar for life! My first Jag was a 2004 3 litre V6 AWD manual X-Type saloon. Loved that car but the DMF disintegrated one day. Replaced under warranty, thankfully. After that I had it for a couple of years hassle free driving. I traded it in at 90k miles against a Jaguar S-Type, which was a definite step up in luxury. Don't be put off by a poor experience with an older Jaguar at the bottom budget. I am currently on Jaguar number 6 (a 2016 XF S V6 Supercharged in BRG) and loving it.

I owned the same spec estate but made a mistake with the engine size. It was the 2.5 which drank the same as the 3.0 but was down on tourqe and it always felt lacking in power. It rattled and creaked from day one and i spent many days curing them. The later facelifted samples were far better, but petrol versions are almost impossible to find. The X-Type was criticised for offering a taste of Jaguar but was spoiled by too many ford parts, this i think was cruel but fairly accurate. I sold mine at a massive loss, the lemon car stigma had hit values hard and no one wanted them. Good luck with selling this one.

This is a prime example of why I and many others follow your channel: about 300 quid profit at the end of a long list of bills to resuscitate a car that only a car nerd would understand. Carry on.

I had a 2008 2.2 diesel auto. It was by far the most comfortable car I've owned. Covering hundreds of miles a day wasn't a problem. However it ate front tyres, it was the first to use a DPF which resulted in oil dilution and 5,000 mile oil changes and the electrics were poor. Door locks failed and whilst the opening rear tailgate glass was brilliant, the switches nearly always burnt out. After 18 months I sold it due to continuing niggles.

My 2.0d also ate front tyres. Good to hear i'm not alone in that. Yes, the constant niggles are a problem and the rusty sills ended it.

Noticed it was Spring at the start of the video and knew exactly where this was going haha. I do however, love the X type 3.0. (Despite the litany of issues they normally have at this age.)

Iv had 2 x types The first was a 3ltr AWD sport spec , Jaguar factory Directors car with 8,000 miles and 12 months old , just loved it The 2nd was a 2.2ltr front wheel drive sport spec 2 yr old , the torc wasn’t much different to the petrol car but the top end was definitely inferior Iv now done what Matt has done , Iv bought a 2005 4.2 V8 XK8 Jag that look’s mint , I bought it in March with a long MOT Iv just had to have the front wheel bearings changed , the ABS pump changed , the DSC loom changed a load of rust cut out to pass the MOT , but you know Iv no regrets I would do it all again it’s the most fabulous car Iv ever owned . You either get or you don’t your either a petrol head or your not Keep up the good work Matt

My neighbour had a maroon X-Type, was maintained and looked after very well, it was in immaculate condition loved how it used to glisten in the sun. Used to take it out on the odd occasion. Sadly he passed away, a so called friend of his from down the street offered his wife £500 which she accepted (crazy deal) however he went back the next day and showed her an Xtype on Autotrader for £300 so gave her that amount! When she told me this afterwards I was baffled as it was worth a lot more, it was just unfortunate that she had been duped in more ways than one.

We had a 2003 X-Type from 2014-2018, 70,000 miles over that time and all for the princely sum of. £950. They are underrated but finding a well cared for example amongst the snotters is key.

I'm new to this channel... I have now watched nearly every video! I really enjoy the presenting style and your real enthusiasm for cars. I think your catchphrase is "I've over spent. " 😂... As with all used cars, there are hidden surprises, but you hate to see a good car go to the scrapyard. A real decent, honest car dealer, I would definitely buy a motor from here...

I reckon with that car, it's not what it's worth in a guide somewhere, it's what it's worth to you. You can't get them any longer and in years to come you'll see this in a local car show (the sort of thing you see at a steam fair). The people who own those cars don't work to a budget beyond what they want to do and whether they have the funds to do it. It's going to be bought for love and not to drive into the ground. It's great seeing the cars that make good content for viewing and not just the ones that keep you in business.

Those wheels are from an XF, I have the same on my XF! I also have the same petrol engine (rare on an XF) and it is a smooth refined drive although a little thirsty🙂 I previously had a 2.1V6 X Type basicly the smaller capacity version of the same engine and it was amazingly reliable, sold mine with 195K on the clock and just needed a couple of sensors thoughout my ownership. The sat-nav is archaic better to use google maps on a phone. The X Type is getting a rare sight these days and a top of the range 3.0 Auto has to be on the way to being a modern classic now. Good on you for saving this one - it should give its new owner a lot of pleasure for many more miles.

I had a 2004 Jag Three Litre Estate and reckon it was one of the best cars I've ever owned. I saw it for sale at a local dealership with a very low mileage. I knew the sales guy so asked him for more info. He said it had belonged to "a titled gent". He checked the log book for me and revealed the previous owner was Lord Carrington, who was Foreign Secretary at the time of the Falklands invasion and resigned because of it. After a couple of happy years, I decided to move the Jag on as I also had a Lexus LS460 and a Lexus SC430. Instantly regretted it as the Jag drove better than either of those two. In fact, the next year, I moved them both on and went back to a Jag XJ Sport - a car with soul.

Matt, you started this project as a car for you. In all honesty if I had been in your shoes I would have done the same. Time went on and you released that it was going to one that you would not make much use of, it’s excellent work the car is now almost as it left a dealers 17 years ago. It’s a lovely car and one that makes a modern practical classic that will go on for year. I’m sure it will appeal to plenty of enthusiasts out there and feather in your cap for saving it. There will be a very happy new owner of that I have no doubt. Brilliant work and love your videos

Matt thanks for the "old man colour" cheered me up no end. I have a saloon post dacelift as a work car 2.2 auto, in the same colour. For reference paint code is GDM Winter Gold. The sills on mine where done just before I bought it, they all go regardless of age and treatment. I've had three of these, so underrated cars. Lovely to drive and unlike the XF they don't constantly have a ritual of every time you drive it, you don't expect an error message. The ABS has a habit of failing and it is a cheap fix, speed sensor in my case three times on different cars. Nice to see a old car like this brought back to life but by God.....in the words of my favorite YT car reviewer, you've "massively over spent" on this one.
