I have a 2003 e46 M3 with 62,000 miles. I’ve done recommended maintenance and it has never failed me. I had the rear view mirror fixed, much cheaper than buying new.

Like you and others I think this was the best looking 3 series ever produced. I have looked at them for ages but never had the courage to buy one. We had a manual ZM Coupe in the late 90's which had the M3 engine. It cost fortunes to service and the cost of the tyres was amazing. Finding someone who could fit them without mashing up the rims in those days was hard work too. Fabulous in many ways but it followed one of the first Lotus Elise and seemed so heavy and ponderous. We have had two more S1 Elise at different times but never had another BMW..... Great road tests, really enjoy your style.

I bought a 5 year old carbon black smg coupe M3 back in 2008. Lovely car, no particular issues over nearly 3 years of ownership, but running costs quite high. Rear springs had to be replaced and interior roof lining over driver’s door due to the glue failing! Great sounding engine and quick when using the full engine revs. Slight oil leak on the diff too. The Benchmark did an excellent E46 M3 project covering all the issues. I now have a 340i with MPPSK and love the effortless turbo power!

Another top video. The missus watches you also but thats for different reasons entirely.. Just got myself an E65 730D '08. Only issues I had was Sat Nav not working (new laser £8) and all the wheels are kerbed but apart from that FSH and ride is good. No warning lights either (touches wood). Considering it was once a £55k+ motor I'm feeling pretty chuffed. I know they say BMW are potentially an expensive beast but I think ultimately they are worth it. I hope your project turns out to be a diamond in the rough and look forward to future M3 videos.

As a car dealer it is quite sensible to take some " risks" now and then on project cars like this. The worst thing what can happen is when you don't learn from this kind of projects. Most important is that the You know all about cars, and when this project is completed you know a little more about them. Keep in mind the M3 E46 is the little supercar that always find a way to a new owner. I owned a 1990 E34 m5 , Same issues with the ambiance lightning in my dashboard ( often solved replacing some sensors and connectors and check the wiring ) rust is a known issue and i had issues with the SMG pump and replaced it ( about 3000,- euro) and had the Airco cooling coil replaced. When that was don i used the M5 for another 4 years as my weekend and family harlot. Looking forward for the project updates and good luck..

I owned a silver convertible with red leather, manual gear box. Reg was ST53 but, I can't remember the rest as I had it on a private plate... owner before me lived in Norwich. I loved the car and after watching this, I want to buy another. My Dad had a 52 plate Coupe with the SMG and preferred my manual.... this model is the best all round grand tourer. The convertible still looks pretty and outlives the coupe version for modern looks and desirability

Get the rear sub frame checked for cracks. This was a super common problem on the majority of E46 M3s. Also pray the engine management light and lack of performance is nothing to do with the vanos. Like others have said SMG pump faults are common and costly. Other than that it's just minor issues, which can be easily fixed. The E46 M3 was the best car I owned and always put a massive smile on my face! Head over to the online forum M3cutters, there's loads of good info and knowledgeable people on there UK based, good luck!

I own the 2006 E46 M3 cab SMG. One of the last E46s produced. The M3 coupe and other models halted production in 2005, the cab ran until 2006. I have owned it for almost 8 years now and I will never sell it. It has 105,000KM’s (65,000 Miles) mileage. I probably drive it only 200KMs per month and make sure I keep it in tip top shape. I have never really had any mechanical issues but I do believe the SMG will fail eventually but then I will convert to manual. Love watching your videos mate. I’m currently buying a 2018 RR Sport SDV8.

I had an e46 330d and I loved that car - one of the best interiors, understated and without all the annoying chrome and bling you see in modern cockpits, pure and functional - and what a joy to drive, handled like it was on rails around corners and very economical too. Your videos are great but you should mount your interior cam on a stiffer suspension, that vibrating picture can be a bit nerve-wracking!

I wish you luck with your project. If you got it for a very cheap prices and you can sort out the engine for a reasonable price all will be OK. The cosmetics no problem. Oh and you need a few hot sunny days you can drive it down one of your favourite country roads with the hood down. Personally I have not got the bottle to do what you have done, but you know a lot more about cars than I do. If they are going up in value and you can get it performing and functioning as it should, you could hopefully make some money out of it? Can’t wait for the next episode!!

Best of luck, no major costs on a M3 than a standard 3 series the engine warning light will be just a sensor wheel refurb for you minimal painting and rust removal just like any other car looking forward to the journey

the coupe is the best but the I also own the vert. love it though the chassis does wobble on bumps. it is very special indeed ,and with MP4s tyres, it handles like the coupe on average tyres lol :) with the top down, it is very very special . the noise , handling , connectedness to the road. it ticks so many boxes for such an old tin can my Parking sensors were a nightmare to fix but BMS Surrey have been great on mine generally and it runs really well. I've already done 4k milea on mine since the end of April.

Drop in power could be vanos seals. For the engine light, get a scanner and read fault codes. Carly for BMW or similar. Rest is easy cosmetic stuff. Key needs a battery.

I had an 03 SMG coupe. Was a right diva of a car but was worth it when I came across the right bit of road. That was until the rear subframe mount gave up the ghost. Expensive job to put right so be mindful of that

Check for rear sub frame cracks, SMG pumps can be a problem along with Vanos issues. Heater valves and AC blower resistors are common problems. Usual junk window regulators all E46s have. Lucky to have the hard top and I'd keep it on. I'll stay tuned.

Good vid. I’ve owned two. One manual and one SMG2. Don’t listen to the SMG2 haters they generally misunderstand the nature of the ‘box. I found it a joy to use in manual mode. Loving the fact you have to “interact” with it more than say a DCT job. You have to work with it a bit and lift slightly on the up-shifts. It’s so much fun! Rubbish in auto-mode (but that should surprise no one because it’s basically a single clutch manual gearbox). I would love another. I’d buy the SMG2 for the thrill or the manual for the better investment potential. Good luck and have fun!

Good project car, test drove one last month but there were too many potential issues and the dealer wouldn’t budge on price but said he,d deal with the issues before sale. Had my hands burnt previously with a 987s boxster so didn’t really want to go full steam into a costly project. So went into a full serviced and well cared for L322 as the family dog snotter 🧐🤨😒 so far so good. Will watch this with interest as this gen along with the boxsters and 996’s offer tremendous value if you don’t mind a bit of work.

Thanks for the video. I just happened to come across it. I bought a 2002 E46 M3 convertible with SMG just about a year ago in March 2019. It was in very good condition, and needed nothing at the time It is my second car and only driven for fun mostly on weekends or the odd weekday trip to play sports. I put on about 4,000 miles (U.S.) in that year and almost made it the entire year with only having to buy two quarts of oil to top off the engine. However, after about 10 months the starter went. I took it to my local BMW dealership for a new starter and had an oil change service done, all for about $1,000 USD (I got a discount for being a BMC CCA member). So all and all not too bad, but the front struts/shocks are going bad, the front end feels like it floats for a second or two at times in turns, so that will need to be taken care of in the near future. Other than that, it has been great! I will catch up on your M3 videos and I have also subscribed.

Great idea running a series of vids for this. Hopefully this isn’t a complete money pit though as I reckon you’ve got over £2k to spend already. Also you should seriously consider having the rear subframe strengthened as it was a design fault acknowledged by BMW who actually extended the warranty to 10 years for the problem. The official fix is to inject expanding foam through the boot floor to fill the internal cavities. Also well worth changing the rear trailing arm bushes for poly ones. The oem ones wear quickly and poly ones really tighten the chassis up. I noticed the car has the pre- facelift boot-lid handle but the facelift LED rear lights. I reckon it’s had the boot-lid replaced. I also recommend ditching the 19s for 18s. It’s the enthusiast choice, will save you money on tyres and the handling and ride is far better. The diamond cut finish never lasts if you do decide to refurbish the 19s. I reckon you might have a Vanos problem because whilst these don’t feel quick at low revs the transition to the high lift cams at around 4.5k rpm is very pronounced and then it should pull really hard all the way to the redline. Looking forward to the next vid!

Never owned one,but I remember the first one I saw out on the roads. It was a yellow/green colour (similar to a colour Saab used) M3 convertible and it looked the business👍😎

I owned one myself back in 2005 she was an 03 plate I had the back lights changed to the later model which was done professionally if not then there could be wiring problem and I warning light would stay on. She was silver with a blue hood with light grey leather. The tv wasn’t the best and the lumber on the drivers seat could easily get damaged if you are not careful. The SMG gearbox was bulletproof, it did make a clunk when going into reverse but my BMW dealership said that’s normal. She was a a real head turner I have owned Jaguar XK 5.0 and Audi RS4’ Avant’s but the M3 was one of my favourite cars. The 19 inch diamond cut Alloys seem to get corroded very easily which is a pain, but better than the 18inch version. Good luck with the project, I won’t let the wife know that I’m watching this as she will think I will get ideas about buying one myself 🤔😉
