I think the E46 era BMWs were their last classic, elegant designs. As soon as Chris Bangle got his talentless hands on the brand, BMW has produced nothing but tasteless and tortured designs, and most of those have aged very poorly indeed.

@@Ijusthopeitsquick I don’t have an issue with BMW designs of late or Bangles era, I think they just need time to grow but they would still look modern come decades later. @@snbala It's a matter of taste, of course, but I miss the simple sleek elegance of the E39 saloon and the E46 Coupé. Their proportions are perfect, and their headlights are where they are supposed to be: on the front of the car facing forwards. I don't understand the modern fad of smearing half the headlight back along the wing. Most modern cars do this, though.

My wife used to have a 2003 E46 320d SE, we bought it in 2007 on 137k miles, and I sold it in 2016 with 308k miles. What a car that was. Just kept on going, and never, ever let us down

My dad had a 320d saloon SE I believe as well back in 2012 bought it with 140k on it and a couple years later sold it for spares and repairs as it had a dpf and egr failure on 194k and it went to Germany the guys we sold it to were gonna take it there and repair it. Unfortunately he just had too many problems with the car so decided to sell it. What nice little car - I have had several estates in my life. Why not? You get a nicely trimmed luggage area instead of an unfinished boot that is always just to short/narrow for a boxy load. Just warning, when you see snow or ice outside - take the bus. These BMW’s are hedge hunters!

Manual seats are a good thing. Anyone planning on keeping a vehicle for a substantial length of time, when the electronic seats break down they're hideously expensive to fix; even on non-luxury models. Giving drivers two options where the seats won't slide up & down uncontrollably. Either all the way forward, or all the way back. The manual ones practically never break. For a single owner/single driver car, they just make more sense.

I have to say Matt you do seem to go to a lot of effort on bringing up the cars to a good standard and I really think that is very commendable. I have met a few traders in my time and I don't think any of them would do a fraction of the repair work that you get done on your cars. And most of them would probably just use the KZbin channel for pretending they do this routinely on their vehicles just to create a good impression.

Just found this video in my recommended - I have a 2004 330i Sport Touring manual that I’ve been running for the last 7 years. Taken it from 145k miles to just over 200k and it’s one of the most complete cars I’ve ever owned. Comfortable, practical, good looking, quick, fun to drive, respectable, and even pretty reliable! Other than the usual BMW cooling system issues, springs/shocks and the odd sensor it’s been pretty good. Sadly rust has got to mine and the rear arches are a state now, but it just walked the last MOT without any problems. Honestly I don’t know what I’ll replace it with, BMW don’t make cars like this any more…

E46's all suffer the same old problems - brake pipes, wishbone bushes, window regulators etc etc etc. The ES (edition sport) replaced the base model E45 in June 2004. To the base spec it added sports suspension, 16" alloys (two different types - 10 spoke style 136 or 'BBS' style 42), body colour door handles, leather M steering wheel without multifunction, manual air con and a black headlining plus a storage compartment package. That one cost £20,750 new.

Please Matt, please recognize and acknowledge, this is probably the best example of a 19 yr old car that has clearly been very well cared for by the previous owner. It doesn't get any better. So a best minimum estimate of what you will need to spend is the same old, four tyres (and bonus, you spent zero on wheel refurishment), then break discs and pads all around. You got off lightly!!. If I was living in the UK, I would buy it at the asking price right away. Actually at this age, I think its much better to have a basic spec and not all those fancy extras that for sure will go wrong. Cracking BMW!!

Really enjoy these vids. We had our 2003 plate 320d Touring for 12 years and it was a great car. Reasonable performance, assured and predictable handling, and very comfortable, esp over long journeys. The only downside was rusty front and rear arches. We had the rear ones cosmetically repaired and new front wings fitted when the car was eight years old. (the arch liners wear away the galvanising on the inside of the arch and it rusts from the inside out). By the time we sold it in 2018 they were rusting through again! Otherwise, a great wee car

And so it is. Mildy embarassed to say I love the the thing.Drives lovely.Puts smile on face. So it should after the inevitable program of forensic restoration and the hilarious Invoice Total. I have to say I did expect the obvious-Service ,Tyres ,Brakes and any run of the mill glitches every day running can throw up and this was done in stages. "Glitches" a new Water Pump (Interesting noise from the engine bay when the metal impeller finally gives up the ghost and breaks up in the housing while still being churned around at 1500-2000rpm) Original Bosch Valeo Alternator sourced from Coblenz,Bosch Airflow Meter plus ancilliary unit, plus minor issues. Long story short: Cost of vehicle-£1250. Upgrades £2250.Toatal £3500. Totally worth it.

I love station wagons, and this one looks pretty good for its age. Also, I honestly rather have the base versions when it comes to old European cars, less tech and things that can go wrong, easy to fix and maintain.

A colleague of mine had an E46 saloon. It was a silver 330i and it was absolutely loaded. Harmon Kardon sound system, full leather interior with heated seats, 6 speed manual box, M sport bits... Anyway, it was an absolute shed. He didn't care for it at all. Rusty, left oil slicks everywhere he parked, cigarette butts on the floor... Poor thing didn't stand a chance. I still hate him for how he treated his car.

Had one of these in the 2.8 straight 6, what a peach of an engine. Let it go cheap and always regretted doing so.

I had a 2005 e46 330d Touring. Bought it low mileage and put 60k on it in three years. Never missed a beat. SE with black leather, 17" wheels. It was immaculate and I regret getting rid of it terribly. I'd have another in a heartbeat if I could only find one that isn't slowly turning to rust 😫 One of these in any body style with a big six is peak BMW to me.

@@exe-678 even though most of them are 20-25 years old, they still look quite modern especially the 2002-2004 post facelift. the estate version looks really sporty for a 20+ year old design.

Those doors shut soldly, my 330i is still a fine thing, 220,000 miles looked after by a specialist. Not so keen on the door handles but that design is to aid rescue, pulling on them makes it easier to get you out.

This was when b.m.w styling was at its best. Good looking car outside and inside. Always liked the dash design on this era. Much better than the flat slab dash on later ones.

Two years ago we had a qashqai 2.0dci and an E46 320msport coupe that we were in need of replacing . A new diesel mild hybrid Sportage arrived late 21 and early 22 a diesel Rav4 arrived so both Replacements are in the house . Here is the Matt part , we still have the QQ and its approaching teenage years and 180k with us and i use it as a daily. The E46 320msport is still lingering looking and sounding fantastic but not getting used . Its an 05 with 94 ish and never moved much since the mot in march . It surely will go this summer 🤔

Excellent video Matt, as always.🎉 This is another fine example of "knowing the quality of restoration, transparency of costs, I'd have bought it in a heartbeat" I'd, er ..actually be prepared to pay more given all the documented work. Think of it as "diamond video premium". Thank You.g

I’ve got a 53 plate 320D with only 55000 on the clock. It’s a much better spec than this one but same colour inside and out. I’ve had it since it was 3yrs only, was owned by the Bank of Scotland for first 3yrs. Got some service history, but then my friend did it every year as he has his own garage and I could talk to him while he was doing the work, always nice to know you’ve got what you paid for! I’ve also got the pack that comes with the car, all the keys+the torch and medical kit too. And every m.o.t since the very first one! The car is immaculate but could do with 2 front wings. I was surprised at how good the wings were on this one! Hopefully mine will be worth more than this one.. i’m going to have to look into it as I’ll be selling it soon. This was a really helpful video for me! Cheers.

I love the E46 but they get through brake discs, brake calipers and they cost money in that respect. but it’s well worth it. This and the E 39 are brilliant cars that cost a bit to run, but well worth it.

318's are always a gamble. I think the high bill was just more about old car maintenance than anything else. You win some & loose some. £395 is still profit. I like the double lighter port in the back I've never seen that before on e46. Still a nice car for someone. Just shame it's not got the M sport bodykit, rear electric windows & heated leather seats etc.

We bought an auto 318 E46 for our son to learn to drive in and he passed his test in it. A great car, but has a Valvetronic Adaption fault, that apparently is quite common. Will have to get that seen to as he wants to keep it
