My father who is an accountant has a late 18 plate black edition model, it’s the 1.8 TFSI model which I thought would be gutless for the weight of the car but is actually quite punchy. The interior is showing its age now but usual Audi build is there. However it’s a very quiet and comfortable car to do long distances in.

I owned a 2012 A6 and a BMW F10 5 series. I felt the same way as you about this car. The A6 was better inside but the BMW was a better drive and looked better outside so I slightly preferred the BMW. I just moved to a 2018 Audi A5 Sportback which is a wonderful car to drive - I'm now in the US so it came with every option and has 2.0L 254HP engine with Quattro all wheel drive. I love the volume knob being there as well, it's just the right place for it to be! Volume controls and climate controls should NEVER be touch screen. I had 3.0 V6 diesel 272bhp on a 17 plate and moved it on after 9 months. I’ve owned four A6’s including an allroad but couldn’t get on with the C7 generation. The 272 bhp V6 is an absolute weapon on an engine but the build quality isn’t a patch on the previous C6 generation. The interior in the C7 is also fussy and a bit of a mish mash. Now back in a 2010 Le Mans run out model loaded with everything. One owner retirement car, fully stamped and 35,500 miles when I got it a month ago. I couldn’t be happier and wouldn’t own another C7. And for anyone wondering about parts costs. Those matrix headlights are £1500 each to replace and the MMI is known to be iffy in the C7 generation. If that goes pop, it’s 4K bill to replace it 👀

@@japanluv I think someone remapped the car. Deleted the dpf on the CPU but didn't manually remove the dpf so it clogged. Then the lemon landed on my lap. After spending 4,000 nearly on different repairs to try fix the issue. From mapping out egr, changing spark plugs, to hollowing out and deleting the dpf, to deleting and unplugging the adblu system because it failed too. I sold it at a small loss and got an A4 2016. Probably sounds like a waste but the car had to be running to sell it. Glad it's gone. The anxiety from breaking down every 3 months was stressful and expensive. Left me with a financial hangover! Another Bob on review Matt. I actually have an A6 c7 Avant 3.0Tdi S-line and it's the perfect car. Loads of space for the family, golf clubs and general life. I find it very comfortable, fast enough for pretty much every eventuality and very easy to live with. Particularly when my long term average fuel ecois about 44mpg and easily achieve 50+mpg on a long trip. It pulls a car trailer or my caravan great, and still feels stable. I genuinely can't find a more suitable family car without spending £25k+ . Anyway, I'd say go buy one, enjoy it and keep it. They're faithfully fantastic and the quality is obvious to all!

I had exactly this car but a manual Avant. It was as dull as ditchwater and absolutely not a driver's car, as Matt says. The issue I have with Audi's is the excessively forward mounted engine that places too much weight over the front wheels. This in turn means that the front suspension needs to be overly stiff. This is even more apparent in the A4 where the disparity in front and rear suspension stiffness makes for very disconcerting response, especially when cornering swiftly.

Not long after I took possession of my car, the gearbox failed. Mechatronics gave up and it cost me the thick end of £4500 to repair it. Service book had said the fluid had been done, but it hadn't. Not the dealers fault, but Audi is so damn expensive. But now its fixed, it's the perfect daily. Smooth, quiet, premium and i don't think has aged all that badly either. I've a 2016 s-line avant 2.0tdi 150bhp model, it's done 220,000 km, only major issue was EGR cooler had to be replaced around 200,000km, seems to be a known issue with them. Other than a few glow plugs and bushings, cv joints, it's been great. Important to changed the gear oil in the s tronic every 60,000km. right enough it's a bit stiff over bumps but you only notice it around towns with ramps and things like that, but upside is that it's fun coming out of sharp corners with the 7 speed s tronic ready to kick up a gear, corners nice and flat. infotainment is a bit dated by todays standards but it will play music over bluetooth form my iphone no prob, that's all i want. I can get 4.8l/100km if you keep it at or below 100km/h. On the motorway speeds I usually get 5.4/100m. maybe it's because it was my first automatic car but no journey seems like a chore anymore, i love jumping into it and going for a drive, hope it keeps going for another few years.

My other car is a 2017 3lt A7 (272 bhp) and the difference in feel of the motor and overall experience of the A7 is night and day. However the fuel economy is a lot poorer despite what some people claim (50mpg+ more like 47mpg if you drive really carefully and 35mpg normally) There are rumours that audi serviced cars have had a roll back on the map to account for the diesel gate shennanigans but have a detrimental effect on the overall performance and fuel economy which might explain my poor mpg in the 3.0. As a daily with mixed driving, the 2.0 ultra can be refreshing in these days of soaring fuel costs compared to the 3.0 engine. I regularly return 55-60 mpg daily on a 15 mile motorway run but as mentioned the bitdi option for either a6 or a7 would be my choice in hindsight.

Totally agree with your “clinical” comment. I’ve had a few Audis and whilst I’ve always liked them I find them sterile. I find BMWs more welcoming and comfy.

My Dad bought one of these new 10 years ago and I've put a few thousand miles on it. The steering I found better than most in its class, but the pedals are offest to the right which, with a dodgy knee like mine, is really uncomfortable. Beyond that yeah, it's...fine. The materials don't age especially well, same as any Audi/Merc/BMW of the last 20 years. The suspension is too firm for what it is, but you get used to it. I actually really like the dash, Audi dashboards have consistently been my favourite for the last 10 years. The boot is really excellent too, can get a double mattress in easily. Can't say I find the 5 series or XF "fun" at all so the A6 doesn't fail in that area for me, compared to those rivals at least. Overall, it's a decent car. For me, not a car I'd ever want but a great benchmark - any other car I buy can't be worse than this in any significant way, since it does everything well enough. All that said, I've never owned an Audi. They're rarely bad, but they're never interesting enough to bother with, even the fast ones. In reality, it's easy to live with flaws if a car puts a smile on your face, it's much harder to live with a car that just makes you not give a toss about it, which this is incredibly good at. For someone who has absolutely 0 interest in driving, but wants to feel mildly flashy and not have too many issues (barring questionable German reliability), this would be high up the list of cars to recommend. It's served my Dad well, I don't think any other car would have been a better choice, except possibly a GS450h, but they're way faster and RWD...he'd have crashed.

I own one now and I’m glad someone else mentioned the pedals, it took a long time before I adjusted to that. Being fairly young I can deal with it, but I can see how it would cause issues if you had a dodgy knee one even lower back

Having owned many Audi's and a few VW's the difference in quality is huge. VW's are not in the same league in my opinion as Audi's - and neither are the dealerships. Also after owning my present A6 Avant for 12 years from new I can say that it is possible to love owning an Audi!!

As an American I don't understand a diesel in an expensive car, I understand gasoline is very expensive, so in a cheap car it makes sense, but if I can afford an expensive car, I'm willing to spend more on a nicer fuel.

This is, as you said, the perfect mileage cruncher especially in a Diesel. It's only problem is the 5 series BMW of that era which offers a bit better package in total. I don't think it lacks character, it's just that BMW and Merc have a better branding these days and that somehow sticks to our spine. I would stay away from the petrol versions. The 4 cylinder Diesel were ofc Business Fleet cars and you can live with them easily as a daily.

@@castrolgtx5064 N47s we’re problematic due to the 25k service intervals, newer B47s share the same chain but are stronger some what but still it’s the intervals that kills these chains. You see way more high mileage BMWs then other Germans it seems.

I know exactly what you're trying to say about the Audi. Back in 2012 I looked at the E350, which was a nice car and went well. the A6 which seemed eminently competent but ended up buying an 11 plate XF 3L diesel The Audi although nice was just that, there was no sense of occasion it was the same as all Audi's The XF was doing 20K a year until i retired I've fitted 2 front springs (common i'm told) and a battery. but have always had it serviced on time. As it owes me nothing I'm just going to keep it as I still feel a sense of occasion when I walk out to use it...

I think you've summed up my feelings exactly. If I were to replace my 18 yr old luxury yacht of a car (2006 xj 350 v8) I wouldn't pick an A6. They just don't inspire me. I was looking (more dreaming really) recently and a CLS shooting brake or A7 did look very interesting. I'm going to stick with the xj for now. She gets me from a to b. I can't justify in my own head spending what I'd need to spend to replace what I have with something newer, especially as I'd miss my wooden steering wheel and I'd only be gaining bluetooth streaming / dab radio. I can go with jagdroid and sort that out! Thanks for the video content, I always enjoy them :)

I’ve had an A4 estate when the kids were born and there’s shockingly little space particularly if you’re 6ft. Fall in love..perfect I moved away from vag (no pun intended) because of a series of vehicles that I couldn't wait to get rid of after three years. Probably I didn't have the right engine nor spec but I think that's the gamble the manufacturers take to put you off the brand by having plenty of models that are a compromise. On the other hand still loving my xc60 t8. Enjoy Harry's not been there for at least a decade...

Matt, interested in your opinion on that A6 vs the brand new one specifically in terms of the touch screen for climate control and sound etc on the new one. It looks cool but I've touch screen in another vw car and it's as if it's designed to take your eyes off the road. The older version seems way more intuitive for driving. Love the video as ever...Great insights such as the slightly harsh ride but beautiful seats
