Just completed a trip south in my 14 year old dirty diesel Golf , we did 800 miles in a week and been back 6 days and still on the same tank of fuel. On paper this car is worth nothing but there's probably another 100k left in the old girl.....I'd give it away to a needy family before I'd sell it for pennies to some profiteering company like we buy any car. They want humdrum cars that they can provide an inflated initial offer for and then pick apart reducing its value greatly. Sold my wife’s car last week. Really clean 2016 mini clubman Cooper D with 66k and a FSH. WBAC initially offered £7200, took it down and the boy said it was a grade 4 and the best he could do was £5100! Put it on carwow and got £7600.. I see the cars now advertised by the dealer for 10k. WBAC are a disgrace, just ripping people off!!

Had a similar experience recently selling my dads q3. It's a 2017 on 105,874 miles and ex taxi so not gonna be worth all that much on these sites but I expected at least 7k. Put it on wbac and they offered 8.2k but when I took it down there they offered £5,120😂😂listed it on carwow and got an offer for £7200 dealer came on Friday and we sold it for £7000. They've now got it up for £9995. Not bad tbh nice easy experience with carwow 🤷‍♂️wbac was awful 😂

Similar story 7k car written off for relatively.light damage on two doors and the sill. Saved us from the likes of WBAC or the headache of private sale. Anyone who expects to get the original quoted (low) price from any of these rip off merchants is going to get an unpleasant surprise in 99 cases out of 100. It is also a feeder for dodgy dealer recycling of faulty vehicles. It really is a minefield

Sold a 2011 Mondeo on Motorway in January. Initial guide price was £4300, after submitting all the details they set a reserve at £3750. The auction finished at £6450! Buyer sent someone to pick it up and they knocked me down to £5300 because they said the fuel pump was noisy - which is normal for the Ecoboost engine - but given I was happy to take about £4000 for it - what I’d paid for it 18 months earlier - and wanted it gone I didn’t push back and was very happy overall.

You kinda have to find out the history, so lot's of times you are buying a car that is really fucked. With newer cars you can run a carvertical check or ask dealerships if the car was on an accident, but cars older than 10 years old, good luck my friend. And "Damaged / repaired cars" are in the market as "New", really scummy market. I guess other countries follow those conditions, even 160.000km is not that much, at least here in Portugal the cars are as overpriced as the Netherlands. Cars in the UK are dirt cheap. 2000€ will get you a decent Renault Clio 1.2 16v in Portugal from 2001 with 200.000km xD

Ive actually sold two cars with motorway and the price they quoted is the price I got. The first guy who picked up my car did a quick test drive and said all was okay. With the second car the driver literally turned up, transferred the money before even starting the engine. They paid me about 1k and 1.5k over any others.

Chap and his dad came over didn’t have any issue with the car then said “how much do I want for it” which i wasn’t expecting as he had been the highest bidder with Motorway. It ended up being a haggle which wasnt what it was supposed to be. Wish I’d told him to sod off now. It isn’t like he “found” anything wrong to justify a different price. I’d taken the day off work and it was the second attempt at selling on the platform so just wanted out. Reported it but heard nothing. Next day it was on his website and sold in a couple of days. Expect he didn’t even clean it as it was immaculate

Sold my Passat last year for £11300 through Motorway. The website initially gave me a valuation of £10500. WeBuyAnyCar offered £7500. The main dealer offered £7000 against my new car. I was sceptical about Motorway. However it was straightforward. The dealer who won the bid came and test drove it. He then he paid the outstanding finance and the balance to my bank account. It really was as simple as that.

My experience of Motorway was decent. They did over value by a grand but because i had access to trade numbers knew it was high. Bids from 3 dealers were received and were dead on trade price. Still better than the trade jn price I'd been given. Sale process was very straightforward.

The old "that's it worth vs what's it worth, to you?" conundrum. I tend to read a low bid as an "I don't want it!" price. WBAC are at the bottom of the food chain, a 15 year old Jag probably costs them more to process than they can get rid of it for. Maybe £65.01 is £270 - £50 to pay the lad to collect it & drive it to the scrap yard, - £50 to pay the guy who inspected it, - £50 to run the switchboard, -£50 to pay for the TV ads etc, & - £50 to fend off the taxman...

I am so glad you did this video , Mat. I took a pristine one owner FBMWSH 3 year old BMW 320 in once, with less than 30k on. They bid me cheap initially, then still took a grand off. I was gobsmacked! Shyster company, in my opinion. Motorway were very underbook. Carwow was such a fart on, i gave up.

Hi Mat, My workmates and me were putting in the registrations of our motorbikes into WBAC for a laugh. Bearing in mind my Honda CBF1000 was only 4 years old, mine from new, had only 9000 miles on it and full Honda service history, they offered me £900! What a bloody cheek! Anyhow, kept my bike until it was 10 years old and sold it privately for £3000! Moral of the story is you've got to be pretty desperate to sell your vehicle before you use those bandits! Great video Matt. I found this is standard practice for we buy any car - I took a 10 year old black ford focus ghia to them (heated leather seats, nice car, 35,000 miles , no faults or damage, 6 months MOT, online offer was about £1800 then, they advised they would have to prepare it to a show room condition and spent 30 mins marking it down £25 for every scratch they found greater than half a cm in length - they eventually offered just under £400. Its a shame the car is only good for scrap at 15 years old and 114,000 miles as it seems like a nice one.

Recently sold my X5 on motorway. Was pretty good to be honest nowhere was offering me over 34k. BMW offered less than 31. I sold it on motorway for 37.5 which to me was great. Easier than I expected it to be anyway lol

UK car market is crazy compare to EU mainland. I just looked up price in Finland for the one with 272 000 km on the clock 2008 2.7 Diesel Premium Luxury and they are like 4500-5000 euros.

Thats because they have fewer used cars on the market than then Western Europe. It's the same here in Estonia, with only a population of 1.3 million. It's cheaper to travel to Germany or France and buy one there, even with the time and cost of driving it back. I know people who do this and sell them on here for a good profit.

I had two great experiences with them over a decade ago - since sold on a few cars and each time they were diabolical. Had one that was less than a year old and absolutely mint - they offered the best price than even a trade in on new - turned up, they made a load of stuff up (plastic tray underneath engine was ‘scuffed’) - knocked £1,700 off the price. I walked out without saying anything and drove off. Right now, Motorway have been the best for my last few cars but this is because you’re selling to dealers - not straight to auction or, like WBAC the care warehouses. Everyone should know you only ever lose money on most cars but the variance between specialist and even main dealers is just a reminder you mean only one thing to them - profit.

Yeah, We Buy Any Car don't want the car. They want humdrum cars but under a certain age and not with obvious issues that make them subsequently impossible to retail. They can then stick them through an auction and make an easy grand or so.

Sold a Fabia via carwow last year and it was a very easy process to be fair. Dealer came and looked at the car (which was very clean to be fair) and paid the price that was offered. Wish I could say I can’t believe WBAC offered £64, but if I’m honest I’m not even shocked. They hold an unrealistic standard for the condition of used cars and will knock you down at every slight opportunity.

Sold my car the other day at WBAC, managed to get an offer at Part Exchange price which I was happy with in the end. Although I would have liked to have sold privately the convenience and knowing I had to clean the car to make it presentable and sort out (or cover up) any problems I would either lose the gains I made or potentially burdening a private seller with maintenance fees it didn't sit right with me going down this path. Either way a seemingly good car with plenty of life left is crazy to get such a low price!

did the same to me with my mazda cx3 diesel 2017 awd no damage, full service history, no problems the car was a bit small for me oh 88,000 they offered me £2500 saying paint looked corroded and damage to the inerior (all lies) went to cazoo they said the car was immaculate and one of the best cars they had had in a long time no damage or wear and tear they paid me £8000 which i was very pleased with

The reason for the low prices is the insurance costs. I also live in Germany and my 24 yr old bmw 330i Cabrio, manual, wirh 125tkm is going for around 12k Euros. In the UK, id be lucky to get 4k for it. In Germany, i pay only 400 in insurance a year with 8 years no claims. To insure this car in the UK on a new policy could cost easily 2k a year, depending where you live. So this cost pushs down the residuals of second hand vehicles...

I have an idea, Why don't we do what people used to do in the 50's & 60's. Buy a new or nearly new car that we could afford, and drive it until it is too rusty or clapped out to pass the Mot. Then scrap it and repeat the process. People who buy expensive toys they can't afford learn a painful lesson in economics. In my day it was Pay as you Go and if you couldn't Pay you didn't Go.

I have used We Buy Any Car twice and both times they offered more than the trade-in amount offered by the dealer. Both cars were at least 14 years old so it does depend on the car. Maybe they don't want luxury cars or it is related to it being CAT N.

Wasn't the case a year ago, 5 years ago they were even cheaper. Reason beeing that UK can not sell cars to the continental Europe, and people had more money than common sense so insted of having an oil changed, they just changed the car. So there were more used cars than people could possibly buy. And as cars from 2000 to 2010 were very relaiable (compared to what was before or is now), they still run theese days.

They used to be far better. Used to be able to buy an old banger with a years MOT for £500 and the used car market was great I got a 2016 Toyota Auris 1.2T with 40k miles for £9500 back in 2019. Now the equivilant used car would be £14000 so sadly not so cheap anymore.

Yeah, just had a look on sales site. This type of car given without engine fault but that fast fixed is around with the same amount on the odo is 11k€ . There are cheaper ones but those have around 300-400k km on the clock. Uk market is insane and you just get mad when you se it

Good informative video! I am ex motor trade. These car buying places are mostly owned by one or two companies - they are getting fussier about what vehicles they buy & pay the absolute lowest price. Only sell to them as a very last resort. Either sell privately for best price or trade in against another car you want to buy.
