One of my life's big regrets. I traded in my beautiful dark green Passat saloon TDi for an e Class way back in 2012. It was a 1999, 130k full service, immaculate inside and out, and well loved. I thought they would sell it on but it was never taxed again, and I assume went off to be scrapped. Also the timing belt had just been done on it It was such a waste and had another 100k in her. So weird I bought a £600 golf Estate 07 all I wanted it for was storage and tip run car for a few week, woman who I bought it off had it since new only getting rid because she wanted something bigger. Full vw service history the car drove like a brand new vw. . New clutch flywheel, anything jt needed it got, ive never bought a car when someone keeps every bill including tyres it was like a bible thick; genuinely expected it to be awful, noises, things broke/not working. The opposite air con everything worked I evan went down to Cheshire from the Lakes in it to prove to the wife how good this car is. She was blown away how a £600 if looked after was like new, we’ve ended up keeping it just mot’d it it passed nothing at all. Were happy with the 50mpg it does everywhere compared to our X3M which does less than half.

My wife and I were so impressed with that car and what it could do, I sought out a newer and less abused example. We ended up with a High line spec, loaded, one owner 2009 2.0TSI model with only 60,000KM. The 1.9 tdi BXE engine is a great engine. I had one in an A3 neughbour still has a passat nowwith 450 000 a going strong. The fly wheel and hollow crank are the only weak spots. But easy to get replaced. A better car than many new cars.

@MiracleMitch2 жыл бұрын
The BXE engine actually suffers from more cases of bottom end bearing wear which causes a connecting rod to seize, snap and be ejected out of the block, than its other two 1.9 counterparts, the BLS and the BKC engines (this latter one is the bulletproof one of the three). In Passat circles (forums and blogs) it is recommended that the rod bearings in a BXE are replaced at around 100k as a preventative measure.

I had an ‘07 US Passat Wagon. Didn’t know there was a version so basic, it had manual shift & manual windows. Mine was the 2.0T version, w/leather & power lift gate. The power went out on the lift gate though, so that sucked. I think it had the drawers you mentioned, in the dash. I never put anything in them, cuz they were so tiny, & I thought it was some sort of black hole that’d swallow up what I put in them. Loved that car. The gauge cluster looked high end. I loved putting the key into the dash to start it. I didn’t mind the electric brake, although it was before they became more common, so you had to tell valet people how to work it then. Only got rid of the car probably due to it needing work that wasn’t worth what I could only sell the car for. Got a 2012 Passat , and drove it till it needed work that wasn’t worth the vehicle sell price at the time. On my 3rd Passat, a 2022, and wish they would keep on making them (at least in the US). Haven’t heard about overseas or Canadian Passats being shelved, but I don’t think I like them as much as the US spec anyway. Cool video! 👍

@@Blackmamba12345 rubbish - the b6/b7 feel miles ahead and far more modern and dynamic to drive than b5/5.5, you really can't compare the two, in fact after owning a b6 highline for 10 years i struggle to find the same driving dynamics in any new vw, and ive driven the b8 passat and the golf 8's, the small suv's etc. The sharp steering feel just isn't there anymore... they lost something they achieved back in the day. Now the cars are so light and so have gone the steering feel, i guess so you can turn it with 1 small finger in any city occasion, but it really takes away the feeling. B5 in comparison is a heavy narrow goat with an extremely heavy nose and just plain boring to drive. (now i realise most people out there probably prefer the light controls, and if im tired, overworked or just had a stressful day - i admit i sometimes thought the car could've been a bit lighter to be ideal - but now after trying all kinds of stuff, my vote goes towards this car's dynamics and steering feel for sure)

Great Video, plenty of miles left in that one yet !! The Passat B6 is a brilliant car if your after a cheap, reliable runaround but be careful with the engine you chose! That 1.9 BXE is a PD (cam driven injectors) and last of the VW TDI with the legendary reliability, have seen a few of these running over 500k kms once serviced regularly. .. usually the Dual mass flywheels go around the 300k km mark but the good news here is the option of solid flywheel replacement options for the BXE at a reasonable price. There was also the 2.0 Tdi Pd engine at introduction , best avoided due to oil pump balance shaft issues which can cause engine damage and turbo issues so steer clear of that option. 2008 seen the introduction of the common rail engines 2.0 and 1.6 (identifiable by the dipstick not surrounded by the plastic engine cover) which are also reliable engines. Can't get much better then a B6 Passat for no nonsense motoring.

The key for this B6 Passat is the same as the next generation too… I had the same key design on my old B7. I also liked the dash design too, there wasn’t a drawer in the dash. But, the suspension on mine was terrible. The sight of a pot hole used to knock the tracking out, including 5 miles down the road after spending a small fortune on VW wheel alignment! I did 35-40K a year in it and I used to get through more tyres from uneven wear. The 2.0 TDI 140 engine was good though, until the VW ‘fix’ killed the EGR valve.

11:41 What is the meaning of "Matching plates" phrase mentioned here? In the UK sometimes front and rear plates are different? Is it even legal?
@giotto43212 жыл бұрын
It means they are both fitted at the same time, eg., with the original supplier's or garage's name. If the car's been in an accident and has had to have the front or back end replaced, it'll probably have had a new plate fitted too, so will unlikely match the one on the undamaged end. Obviously, the number itself should always match!

Maybe it's a sense of taking part in the ducking and diving without the risk and inconvenience. It is for me, a bit boring when he sells them on to a mate in the trade though.

1.9 tdi is the best VAG 4 cylinder engine ever made. Had a skoda fabia with that engine which i sold still running( but oil and coolant leaks) on 250000 miles. 55mpg cheap maintenance. What a car...

I run a European car service and repair shop in Perth, Australia. We have a 2012 Passat Wagon (Estate) on our loan fleet which we bought used a few months ago. Its clean but not perfect in black with 164,000km (102,000 miles). Obviously, we service it ourselves. It drives really well and apart from replacing an AC compressor and condenser for the upcoming hot summer, its been faultless. Nearly every customer who uses it wants to buy it!

Always enjoy watching your videos, have watched most of them now. One question I have was, in your early days what did you do for insurance on the cheap cars,? I guess trade insurance would have been a lot of money to start out?

Went to my family last weekend - all 3 sisters had acquired dogs during lockdown. All the houses stunk and we did too - got home and stripped off and put clothes in the wash - the machine - not the pile of washing to be done as that didn't stink of bloomin dogs !!

We have a 07 plate Passat estate in black 1.9TDi, it’s our second car, it Just goes and goes, it’s got tonnes of room in the back, it’s like an old Friend, it cost us £550, we bought it with 4 winter tyres on it, the front wings are a bit corroded, but other than that it’s very comfy and brilliant on fuel, I don’t worry about parking it, and would rather drive it than my wife’s new Audi Q3.

What devalues this most is that it’s a 1.9 TDI in S spec. At this sort of price level surely you just go find a 2.0 TDI SE so you at least get a centre armrest.
