Took this route on 2022 trip out east. Nothing like the 400 series highways. It bypassed all the heavy Toronto traffic on the 401. It was pricey since we travelled from just before Mississauga to Markham.

You failed to mention that this is the most expensive toll highway per km in all of North America. And toll rates fluctuate depending on time of day. There is also the $1.00 trip toll, no matter the distance, and an additional $2.00 if it takes your plate picture. Even the stupid transponder has a lease fee per month, even if you don't use the highway for that month. I agree that another highway across Toronto was needed, but this isn't easing congestion much when people refuse to drive it cause its so expensive.
@FreewayFranks5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the additional informations! I'm not from the area, so it's always welcome. I agree with you, this highway is not fully doing its job to remove cars from the 401 and it will remain that way unfortunately. Though I enjoyed my drive on the 407 anyway.

How much is the cost per kilometer ? Here in italy, where most of the motorways are toll roads, it is on average 7-8 eurocents, with a minimum of 5 and a maximum of 12 for new motorways or motorways going through difficult mountain passes. The criticism here is that the leasings remain the same for a lot of time , even if there are rules requiring to tender them every few years. A situation like this creates a monopoly of 2-3 societies and leads to an increase in toll prices even if the construction costs have been returned sice long, because much of the motorway system was completed by the mid 70’s.

Freeway Franks Wow... and I thought that 0.15€ for the newest motorway in Italy (a35 Brescia-Milan) were a lot 😅. Anyway it could have sense since there’s a toll free option and if the price wouldn’t be high too many people would use it and it won’t solve traffic problems on the 401.

Merci beaucoup Astey ! Oui exactement.

You can drive the 426 mile length of the New York Thruway (I-90/I-87), from Buffalo to New York City and back to Buffalo (852 miles), a toll road for peanuts compared to 407 ETR. Actually 2.1 cents per km. No accounting fee and no video fees. 407 ETR is the biggest rip off Toll Hwy I have ever driven on in North America. Then there is the cost of driving across the top of Toronto on Hwy 407 everything is electronic and automated, drivers pay for the camera operations and the billing costs in addition to the exorbitant toll rates. Even Al Capone and his crew never had it as good as this during the bootleg liquor days of the 1920’s and 1930’s!! It is very expensive to travel this road! I thought you might like to read this, it’s a real eye opener, what a rip-off!! In the early 1990’s Ontario was almost bankrupt under Bob Rae’s NDP government. But it desperately needed new roads, as it still does today. So the Rae government built a toll road around Toronto and it was a great success. It was a cash cow called the 407 ETR.

Toll Highway 407 ETR JUST SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! just received a notice from our rental car agency that we owe $23.87 US$ for driving the 407!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WTH great signage and notification to the traveler!!!! DON'T DRIVE THE 407 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The 407 Express Toll Route is the only toll highway in Ontario. Visit the 407 ETR website for detailed information. The entrances to the 407 ETR are marked with large blue overhead and / or roadside signs. Alternatively, you can use highways 401, 403, and the QEW (Queen Elizabeth Way) which parallel the 407 ETR route at no charge. There are no toll booths, but overhead cameras are located at all on and off ramps. The cameras electronically record the vehicle’s license plate. The toll is then calculated automatically, and a bill is sent to the registered owner of the vehicle. There is no other way to pay 407 tolls. All Canadian provinces and most American states have reciprocal agreements regarding collection of toll charges. If you are driving a rental car, the toll bill will be sent to the rental car company (the registered owner). The rental company will then - per the terms of the rental agreement - charge an administration or processing fee, and bill the total amount to your credit card. These fees can range from $10 to $60, and for a single trip the fee is often much larger than the toll itself. Unless the rental car company has specified (preferably in writing) an administrative fee for 407 tolls that you consider reasonable, it's best to avoid the highway altogether.

Excellent job there and had to avoid this toll road if you are using Northeastern United States and Great Lakes EZ Pass because you will be charged with the pay-by-plate toll in C$ when I was in the Toronto Mississauga area back in April 2009. What the 407etr concession needs to do is bring in the 407 transponders and join EZ Pass Northeast United States and Great Lakes so that American drivers using this road don't have to pay pay by plate toll. An example of this would be New York 42nd Street Port Authority Bus Terminal to Toronto Bay Street bus terminal which would have been easier if they have the EZ Pass transponder work with 407etr electronic toll gantries. 3:40-3:50 in the Video has a NY State yellow plate 2010-present and using American Northeast and Great Lakes E-ZPass on this toll road and would have saved some tolls if this toll road accepts US EZ pass accounts
