No need to apologize for starting the 407 video on the 403. My Dad's family is from Hamilton and I went to Mac, I have very fond memories of that stretch of the 403. Thanks for sharing.
@EuropeanRoads5 жыл бұрын
I noticed most of the toll road is concrete. In Europe almost all toll roads are asphalt because they are cheaper / easier to maintain. Overhauls don't require long-term capacity reductions if you plan it right. For example in France most toll roads are resurfaced overnight.
@AsphaltPlanet15 жыл бұрын
when the 407 was first built, it wasn't a private highway. It was tolled, but the tolls started at only ten cents per kilometer. Tolls for transport trucks are 3x the rate of passenger cars. So if its 55 cents per kilometer (or whatever it is), it's $1.65 per kilometer for transport trucks. Crazy expensive. Most GTA freeways started out, or at least have a road base made out of concrete. At some-point, the 407 will be overlain with asphalt I would expect.
@JruGordon5 жыл бұрын
6:32 the original plan was for the 403 to follow the 407's current alignment from the QEW/403/407 interchange in Burlington, and continue eastward along the current 403 alignment east of 9th line to the 401. The 407 was intended to branch off the QEW around the Ford Plant in Oakville (following the current 403 alignment in that area), and then continue north as the 407 on its current alignment past the interchange around 9th line. It was always planned to be numbered 407, but was originally intended to be a freeway, not a tollway
@AsphaltPlanet15 жыл бұрын
I don’t think that’s true. I have seen old interchange configurations on maps and the north-south portion of the 407 doesn’t appear to be a through route with the east-west section. More likely, even back then the north-south portion of GTA West had already been conceptualized as a continuation of the north-south Highway.

In Colorado we have E-470 which is one of the most expensive toll roads in the US. The toll is roughly US 30¢ per mile (CA 40¢ per mile / US 19¢ per kilometer / CA 25¢ per kilometer) for people with an ExpressToll transponder which is available without any rental cost, just the cost of the toll. License Plate Toll costs roughly US 48¢ per mile (CA 63¢ per mile / US 30¢ per kilometer / CA 40¢ per kilometer).

the 407 being tolled as heavily as it is really negates the reason they built it in the first place as the tolls on the 407 are some of the most expensive in north america. If it must be a toll fine just make the tolls more affordable and you would actually see more people use it instead of the 401

North of Toronto, no wonder the 407 is wide. Some have to take the 407 and deal with their money to pay to drive the 407. The tolls of the 407 are the most expensive in all of North America, right?

I don't know if the 407 is the most expensive or not. It might be for an urban road (though some of the peak hour tolls on say, I-66 in Washington are pretty steep. And the PA Turnpike is pretty steep as well.

I would have said the 407 is Canada's most expensive toll and that requires a transponder. CA$50.00 is most likely the cost of driving the 407, but that's not only the case.

@@SlowedByCinnamxn If you don't buy a transponder, the cameras at the entrances and exits take a picture of your licence plate and send you a bill in the mail. Your bill includes the tolls plus the camera charges ($4.20 CAD per trip), the monthly account fee ($3.95 CAD per month, even if you don't have an account), and an extra $1.00 CAD per trip for some reason. If you have a transponder (which, now in 2023, costs $24.50 CAD per year or $3.95 CAD per month), It's the same thing, minus the camera charges. It's unnecessarily complicated.
