Hi coach! I have anxiety issues so I went through a lot of difficulties learning to drive. My biggest problem was merging with oncoming traffic on the highway. When I drove on the far right lane, whenever I saw incoming traffic, particularly trucks, I panicked and was afraid of a crash! I know it's better to prepare for a lane change but I would typically slow down by instincts. What would you suggest getting over this fear? How do I practice merging safely? Thanks a lot!

@@smartdrivetest oh man, I have a car practice scarcity, cuz don’t have any cars in the household right now. Had some instructors classes in Hope, BC, and the exam was scheduled in Abbotsford, near Vancouver. Then I drove car a bit in Ukraine and a bit in China, as a fresh driver. The ICBC instructor told me that I failed through bunch of reasons (I had just one hour of practice in Abbotsford with the Valley school instructor), which are as follows: wide right turns, then once I missed the school sign in the area of test, proceeding with 45 kms, and forgot to turn off the signals few times, additionally she wasn’t satisfied with my stirring and speed maintenance. Asked how much of a car practice I’ve had, I said altogether 6 hours. That’s it.

Good morning. I'm 41 years old and I'm embarrass to say I'm just learning how to drive. I'm having difficulty staying in my lane( not good judgment). What advise can you give on how to develop that perfect way of staying in the lane without going too much on the left or on the right?

Never too late to learn my friend. You inspire other smart drivers! See this vid for staying centered in the lane: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pqjOioOBr72hiNU 1) Look farther down the road; 2) Look for landmarks to navigate where you're going; 3) practice in a parking lot - see this vid: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bKuQlINunJaohrc Your first and most important landmark is to look farther down the road and follow other traffic. Drop us a note if you have further questions. Cheers Rick

I would argue the gearbox won't suffer from shifting down. The load, in that case, comes from wheels which is nothing compared to the load that comes from the engine when accelerating. You're right it can get out of control in semi-trucks when done wrong, but in cars it doesn't matter, especially front drive. Speaking of course shifting down one gear at low revs, not something stupid like shifting from fifth to first gear, or when already at high revs. By the way, you can drive around pretty much without using breaks at all. There's a video about that, made by some UK guy, I forgot his handle, but he also makes some good driving techniques videos. It's about anticipation and looking/planning ahead. Best regards!

Thanks for your comment my friend. You're correct, you can drive with minimal use of the brakes. And it is about managing that space in front and reading traffic patterns and interpreting the movement of individual road users. In a manual, you can avoid both the brakes and downshifting for the purposes of slowing. It's a big topic, and I'll put it on the list for videos to make. All. the very best, Cheers Rick
