Have noticed that also. That's usually when they get caught. Very little financial planning from all these hooligans. If they could plan out all these escapes, why couldn't they plan out their lives!! It was a different day and few people were informed about the big financial picture. TV stations closed down at midnight. No business shows aired. Very few people knew what a stock broker was; never mind the hefty commission to pay for trades. Kids really, really had to be encouraged to graduate from high school. One was lucky to live past 70. Who took supplements? Nutrients were mentioned in high school science and Home EC. classes but so what. Would anyone dare take them? Could go on and on but do enjoy seeing what I lived through and yes, I know most of the makes and models of the cars. But we all thought B. Crawford was stupendous and always got his man! That's what we watched it for then; now, it's for content and ambiance. Would be wonderful if public office holders were as determined and dedicated for the good of the public today.

Back in the old days, small town America, they had universal checks that you could use if you didn't have any cash, or checks with your name printed on them. I can remember my dad using one once, and even wrote it out to the local merchant, using a pencil! Of course it wouldn't work if they didn't know you.

Love these old show and the cars in them. At about 24:35 (and a second or two after), Matthews tries to duck an already fired bullet. You'd have to react quickly for that. No doubt, that a lot of shows wherein guns are fired, the actors do the same thing. Still, it's a great old show.

@@murphynapoleon : What makes you think they used natural scene sound? They never did it that way, the location sound was always thrown away and a sound effects artist (known as "Foley artist" in USA) added sound after, back in the studio. You hear typical low budget TV sound artist mistakes continually in Highway Patrol episodes - such as car tire squealing on dirt roads, tie squealing without wheel spin. I don't think Foxeema was that devious.

Met a counterfeiter years ago, old guy. Some guys had been arrested for printing fake $100.00 bills and he called them amateurs. He asked me the last time I had held a hundred or even a fifty and it had been a while. If someone gave you one, what would you do? Well, look it over of course. He said that you print up the grains of beach sand type. Ones. two, five, ten and twenties. Because they are so common, no one even looks at them twice. He said he bought a pack of smokes at a shop and asked if the clerk could change out the one dollar bills from the bank. Gave them 20 new bills. He said he got 3 good fives, a pack of smokes and some change. The fakes all had the same serial number so attention to detail wasn't a priority because they were so common. Use them anywhere except a bank, don't pass a large number, never use the same place twice. He got caught of course because he was ratted out, but he said it was just a cost of doing business.

Broderick Crawford was a fine actor and had a strong screen presence. It is rather hard to accept that, at the time of this production, he was only in his early forties. It should go without saying, however, that not all of us age gracefully, and Crawford should be commended - and remembered - for his considerable body of work as an actor.

REALLY enjoyed this episode, particularly the first 10 minutes or so. Interesting to watch police procedure in dealing with 'questioned documents', and the way Dan comes to conclusions about how the criminals will behave in future. Yeah, I KNOW the show's been scripted, but it's a change from his usual cases. 'Well done' the scriptwriters. Just wondered if this REALLY is a job for the Highway Patrol, though. Shouldn't they be issuing parking tickets or going on chases?

In books chronicling the series they apparently used the Thousand Oaks-Simi Valley area a lot. All of those roads that have curbs but nothing built on them are all houses now.

Good story, but counterfeiting is a crime for the Secret Service, not the local or state police.

Counterfeit money is Secret Service. Check forgery is local or state. Apparently the CHP does that and kidnapping, art theft, bank robbery, terrorism investigations, and everything else.

Not necessarily. Some towns are unincorporated and don't have a city police department. I had an aunt and uncle who lived in West Hollywood and the sheriff's department and highway patrol were responsible for policing until it incorporated in 1986.
