Growing up as a child when Columbo first aired, I never understood why anyone would watch a show when you knew who committed the murder from the outset. But when I watched Columbo in my late teens and 20's, it made me realise how ingenious the script was. It was not about the murder, it was about the tiniest bits of evidence that many of us would overlook. One of the greatest tv police series every made, with a great lead actor
@Porchlight833 күн бұрын
Agreed. When you see the murderers motive, watch them commit the murder and form their alibi, its much more intense as you witness Columbo systematically pick it all apart and eventually collar the perp. There were only a few episodes where i thought they kinda cheated with Columbos discovery of certain clues, but the acting and film quality was always top notch.

Same here. The show debuted a few months before I was born so i was still only a little child when the original series ended. I would watch it with my mom but didn’t understand why she loved the show. It wasn’t until my 20’s when i was home on leave & my mom was watching some of the reruns so I wanted a few with her that I began to pickup on some of the finer details of the show.

Whenever I see Mr. McGoohan, I always yell “Steinmetz!” 😂. He has spoiled us Columbo fans with his acting and directorial talents. The on screen chemistry he and Mr. Falk shared was absolutely delightful.

@@lisawilliams2013Those are some of my favorite Columbo villains also, Lisa, & I have 3 more on my list….Donald Pleasance, Ruth Gordon & Robert Vaughn. Pleasance is my all-time favorite, as is that episode Any Old Port in a Storm.👍

That was one huge glaring hole in the story. A brilliant man, carefully planning a murder, and then carefully leaving a huge clue behind. Even before DNA it is stupid to think that leaving your teeth imprints and saliva at a murder scene would be untraceable. Not Patrick's fault, just poor writing. He was absolutely my favorite villain!!! The episodes with him, Culp and Cassidy are all my favorite episodes. So much talent was hired on that show.

I've been binge watching my Columbo dvds this weekend, so love them, Patrick McGoohan always one of my favourite guest stars, great actor and very attractive.

McGoohan with his careful planning and Robert Culp with his barely contained seething anger were my two favorite villains. (with a big nod to Johnny Cash and his homemade parachute 👏)

I always liked the fact that Falk liked McGoohan so much. I've been a fan of McGoohan since Ice Station Zebra and The Prisoner. Then I found him in my favorite show Columbo and loved him even more. I also feel that this episode, the Academy one, highlighted Mr. Falk's acting ability and the character's problem-solving skills better than any other episode. At least in my humble opinion.

Watching this show made me realize I'm brilliant. So many people claim this is a good show, and Columbo is smart the way he gets the criminal. However, I generally had it solved from the very start, knew who the killer was and even how the killer did it and tried to cover it up.

I always thought it was kinda ironic that as the initial 70s run of the show was generally better than the later episodes, the two from the reboot starring Patrick McGoohan were better than the ones he starred in from the 70s. In my humble opinion, of course.

The only problem was he had already said, earlier in the episode, that he had never been there. In this clip, he stated, in front of four police officers, that he had NEVER been there. Thus, the next question is why did you lie sir? What time were you there sir? How did you get there sir? Columbo already destroyed his alibi.

I'd take the chewing gum impression evidence into court as a defendant and so would a defense lawyer. There's no way a jury is going to convict on a murder charge based on evidence of a bite mark on chewing gum; gum is rubbery and the impression left would be manipulated.
