Car companies are stealing your data, you won't be happy when you hear this. Car companies have admitted they are selling your private data. If you actually read the fine print on any of these Terms of Service contracts for the connected car apps, it’s horrifying. The quantity of data that is being collecting, and what they can do with it, would keep anyone from signing up for that "service" if they actually read it. Companies want to be able to track your location, direction of travel, and speed without restriction and for free? Plus the in-car audio recording they can do (as we mentioned recently in the Kill Switch Infrastructure Bill - • New Law Mandates 'Kill... ).
You don’t sign these agreements at the dealership. No one will hand you paperwork and confirm you understand what you’re agreeing to before you click confirm. You buy your car, go to use one of the integrated services like the built-in apps, radio, maps, wifi, autonomous driving features, phone connectivity, etc. a screen pops up and asks you if you agree to their terms of service or you can’t use that service. But nobody reads these super long agreements and many times you would need an attorney to understand them. We just want to use the vehicle and all of the great features you paid for. The problem is that you agree to hundreds or possibly thousands of pages of legalese saying you have no privacy in your car, and the car company and their service partners own all your data, and sell it. They make huge amounts of money doing this.
You can opt out! If you can figure out how. Some services have a tight time limit before they automatically activate after a short period of time - like a week. Again has anyone ever done that. It’s buried deep in the service agreement that is rarely if ever read by the end user.
Volvo outlined on its quarterly earnings call last month that its main competitive advantage going forward will be its superior ability to monitor the activities of the drivers. They are installing more powerful computers, more powerful cameras, microphones, and other sensors to detect your activities in greater detail, and they view that as their number one profit center going forward.
What worries me is assuming cars and companies have stopped monitoring us simply because we have asked them to by opting out. Really, how would we ever know? Just because you just declined a service, doesn’t mean they stopped collecting data. Car manufacturers and the service companies can still monitor all your activity.
To their credit, they tell you this in the fine print...that nobody reads.
As far as what the average consumer thinks; the first major story that breaks showing how a private individual was arrested, charged, convicted, and sent to prison entirely based on evidence from vehicle monitoring will wake people up. Until then, only the informed will see this coming.

@@mrjim1973 it may be blessed with a 20-plus year old vehicle but ask yourself this question do you carry your cell phone with you and do you have Bluetooth if you do even if you don't have or should I say not use let's say Google Maps or any other feature on your phone guess what your phone is tracking you no matter where you go if you drive that 2008 Crown Victoria I just thought I'd let you know on that one.

@@garyquail4996 Im smarter than that. I do not own a cell phone, the number has been converted to a land line. When I did, it was an old style flip phone. Anyone who wants to TALK to me ( I do NOT respond to or send text messages) will have to get in touch with me when Im home. That worked fine for me in the 60s 70s 80s and 90s.

I work with a fleet company that provides vehicles for "last mile delivery" operators. When I get the chance I ask drivers if they connect their phones. All say yes, to which I reply the talking points made in this video. These drivers look at me like a boomer when I educate them. The business practices of the drivers is so aggressive I often replace tires and brakes at 20k intervals.

Don’t subscribe to Onstar or Sync software updates. Any subscription based options can be declined including those maintenance apps. Even when you connect your Bluetooth from your phone or Apple Watch can be retained by the vehicle receiver. Just fyi…

I told the subaru dealer that I did not want onstar or satellite radio. They told me it came with the car and I had to take it.

In order for them to be able to collect ANYTHING live, they have to have access to your vehicles MODEM. Look in your owner's manual, determine which fuse is responsible for the modem and remove it. Problem solved! Of course, this also eliminates your vehicles access to the internet, so use your phone. As for the 30 seconds of data saved in the ECU before a crash, there's nothing one can do about that, but I believe your insurance company or anyone else needs a court order to gain access to it. Solution, don't drive like an idiot and cause a crash!

Has nothing to do anymore with navigation or your cell phone. Most new vehicles have built-in cellular service to allow automakers to upload and sell your data forever. Drivers have been turned into non-stop cash cows for automakers.

It has more than that. It has electronic fuel injection, electronic spark timing control and electronically controlled transmission shift solenoids and pressure regulator. I know--Ive been in automotive repair for over a half century.

ROFL That cannot happen with my cars. They have THREE electronic components, a hall-effect pickup coil in the distributor, a 7 wire module which activates ONLY the ignition spark, and the radio. NO fuel injection and NO computer. I do NOT need or want electronic toys and features in my vehicles.

It's amazing what our electronic devices in our cars do to track you down if it isn't that if you're driving 20-year-old plus car just remember this if you have a modern cell phone they can still track you and yes even insurance companies use that data to adjust your premiums much higher than ever before.

Yeah. Apparently modern phones can accurately detect when you enter and exit a vehicle it seems (thanks to info from the 10+ odd sensors they have in them, humidity, temperatuere etc).

With a little research and some elbow grease, I bet those systems can be disabled or disrupted. Soon someone will offer the public some sort of vehicle VPN or masking type system. I ve been shopping for any old car and you probably should too.

This is all done via SIM chip with connectivity to the cellular network. Find the SIM chip and remove it or disconnect it from the antenna. This information needs to hit the car forums. I am sure it is not legal for the dealer to do this. The question is where do they bury this chip on your car or the connection to the antenna?

Makes me want to remove touchsreen if the GPS antenna cannot be removed to stop car tracking my drives. Lauren. Have you heard yet that NHTSA is going to make it mandatory for 2029 cars to have emergency braking feature? This will cause much more expensive car windshield replacement costs for everyone.

I drive old squeeze boxes and work on new trucks. 50% of my work is dealing with all the new technology inbedded in these vehicles. True story, I introduced a 20 something to a truck with a carb and distributor

We really need more research on this topic. Like a database of car companies and models and what they are doing with your data. Also, we need interventions in the form of hardware modification that buyers can do after the sale to disable these systems. For me, I will try to stick with my older car for as long as I can.

I recently read that Toyota is particularly bad at collecting your personal data, for instance their cars have microphones designed theoretically for phone use, but they in fact record what you say every time you open or turn on the car and send it to shady servers in Japan.

Even worse with Teslas as they collect your data for free and re-sell it back to you in form of FSD at full price although all Tesla owners have and will contribute to this service in form of a data supply. How Tesla will build FSD if we have / had the right to opt out of collecting data from out cars or at least offer a discount for the services our data had helped to build.
