The Tesla Cybertruck is perhaps the most hyped vehicle of the last 12 months. Looking like nothing else on the road, the truck promises "Truck 2.0" meaning a new evolution of what a pickup truck can be. But in reality, it disappoints on almost every level, mostly because everything about it is in service to a shape and design that doesn't work in reality. Here are a bunch of reasons why driving one didn't change my mind that it's deeply stupid.

It’s not like it’s safe on the inside either. Have you seen the “safety straps” that they placed inside the car if the battery dies and you’re completely locked on the inside? No indicators on the vehicle, no on site paper manual explaining that, no. Its also hidden by a sleek panel into the car plastic frame, which you have to find, and if you’re in the trunk, in the pitch black, that you have to pry out with your fingernails (rest in peace to those who have short nails) and then you have to stick your hand in a tiny crevice and rummage to find a simple cloth strap. The strap doesn’t glow in the dark, no reflective material, you have to find it by your hand, not by sight IF you can fit your hand in there, because the space is TINY! And guess what? With the window being bulletproof, any stuck passenger can wait hours inside, which can be burning hot, while paramedics and first responders might have to wait on specialized tools to penetrate a bulletproof window. Even inside, you are absolutely in danger if the battery dies and you can’t do any of the steps I prefaced earlier. Big fat WTF moment.

American cars have only just adopted Projection Headlights a mere decade after they've been in the European market. Also, Americans don't have dynamic indicators because US regulations says you're too stupid to recognise a turn signal unless the light is fully illuminated within the first second of it being turn on... And let's not get started on using your brake lights as turn signals... Nor side reflectors. European cars as just as well made, just as fuel efficient and can definitly take a corner a lot better. @@tomwallen7271 I would say Cybertruck is the worst possible option for apocalypse. Horse is an excellent idea. An enduro bike with a small engine (maybe 250ccm) is also perfect. You don't want to be stuck in a traffic jam or be dependent on roads. In such a crisis scenario the best option is to stay at home. The second best option is to have a group of friends. All 4x4s and pick-ups would fit, but those are gas hogs. Only Suzuki makes light 4x4s.

Another issue in Europe is the weight. The B driving license (for cars) has a limit of 3 500 kg for gross weight, anything above it is considered a truck or bus (if it has more than 8+1 places), which means another license on top of B, often higher tolls, and also being able to prove you don't drive for commercial purpose - or having commercial driver's licence and tachograph recording to prove you're keeping with the rest time regulations. Those are no joke, people are getting stopped and checked with their trucks and fines are huge. Cybertruck weighs 3 000 kg (the Cyberbeast version even over 3 100), that means if you want to avoid the above, the carrying capacity needs to be less than 500 kg. For comparison, Ford Fiesta has 510, Škoda Fabia 530. Who would buy such a big and expensive car that cannot even carry as much as a microcar?

Build quality critiques & the lack of, or undelivered features, are totally valid. You and so many others talk about 'Who needs a fast truck' or 'whats the point of fast acceleration'? Like its worthless. I can't speak for others, but I will say, 90% of the time I'm not hauling anything substantial, and I'm only actually towing something even less of the time than that. But a truck is a daily driver so I have ALL the capabilities for when I do need them. So having fast, punchy acclerated vehicle thats FUN & ENJOYABLE to drive the other majority of the time I'm in it, its of high value. People are simpling kidding themselves if they don't see that.

They actually prefer to charge at 105 degrees. There is zero issues charging in extreme hot or cold. Multiple tests have been done to demonstrate this. Every Tesla has no problem with extreme heat or cold

I sat on one yesterday at a car show. I inspected the panels…and the finish and fit of them was weird, if not sloppy. It looks very strange, very unpolished. I would have no issues with this if the truck was $40k (which obviously can’t be priced at because of all the tech) but the build quality of it, feels (and upon closer inspection) looks cheap. Very strange, not a truck I would want to live with. Sometimes I look at certain newer RAM and Ford trucks and I say to myself “that’s a beautiful truck”. The opposite is true for this Tesla.

@@Pratik4311 I'm a big fan of electric cars but in my country you can buy a decent used truck for the equivalent of US$10k which leaves $90k for fuel, which at mid-2024 prices would get you 550,000 miles of fuel here given the average truck MPG. So roughly speaking, the Cybertruck will start to save you money on gas after you've driven 500,000 miles in it. Until you drive it that far, it's not saving you any money on fuel. (This would obviously be less if you were comparing it to a brand new ICE truck, but if saving money is your goal you wouldn't ever be buying new to begin with. It also assumes you are charging it for free 100% of the time.)

A diesel vehicle wouldn't be a bad choice since it can run, maybe not all that well but at least move, on a wide range of liquid fuels, even something like cooking oil in a pinch. But in the end it really depends on what your imagined post-apocalyptic world is like. If you're imagining a governmental collapse but most infrastructure remaining intact, then cars might still be practical even if you have to run on non standard fuels or electricity. If it's a bit more disastrous than that, then you're probably looking at something more basic like walking, mountain biking or horse riding. In the latter case your world is probably going to shrink, a lot.

I was a fan of the design when it launched. I was under the (perhaps naive) impression that the design must have been driven by an engineering process. We always hear about Elon's companies being driven by "first principles" and hardcore engineering know-how. The price was amazing. The range was amazing. The "exoskeleton" concept was amazing. Here was an engineering marvel in the form of a work of art being sold at a price that couldn't be beat! And just imagine... if THIS was the first electric truck on your block, ,that might get some conversations going about electric trucks. And then. Sigh. The first hint that all of it was a lie was the windsheild wiper reveal. If the design had been driven by engineering, then surely that would have included them solving the wiper problem. The over-sized, over-priced wiper just sort of tacked on as an afterhtought proved that this wasn't even remotely first principles... more like last principles. Instead of form follows function, we have function compromised by form. Then we find out it will cost twice what it was supposed to. Then we find out it only gets a fraction of the range it was supposed to. Then we find out the towing rating is lower. Then we find out that the exoskeleton thing was complete rubbish and it's basically a traditional body-on-frame design with a very heavy body on that frame. And we find out that despite being praised as a cheaper, faster alternative to stamping, Tesla actually found it very difficult and expensive to impliment manufacturing of the body. And then we see the interior and instead of minimalist, futuristic, sleek but still ergonomic... it just looks cheap and crappy and not really well thought-out at all. And worst of all... instead of being the first electric truck on the block... it's the last. Companies who announced their trucks after the Cybertruck reveal still beat them to market. There are a few interesting things happening with the Cybertruck in terms of innovative manufacturing, but like you said, none of them are consequential to the form factor. It misses basically every mark Elon set for it... even in the looks department because that wiper is hideous and dumb. They couldn't even do that right. Baffling.

When you look at a mirror you aren't looking at a flat image like on a display, you're getting full 3D depth and still focusing in the distance. It might also increase eye strain refocusing your eyes on something close like a display and back to far away for your forwards view.

@@kapytanhook 450 miles, and if you don't have a house with solar panels to recharge it, what are you doing in the apocalypse? The real threat in the apocalypse is tires. Neither the bicycle nor any vehicle are good to go once you run out of tires. What runs out first gas or diesel or tires? There are expensive metal mesh tires though. Maybe those outlast the solar panels?

A question - can it be fixed? How hard for Tesla to make an economical version? I've had one on order for many years, still have not seen one. The software and supply chain (light bar) will eventually catch up. I would image the quality will also eventually catch up. The truck goes fast, okay so what, don't drive fast.
