The sad thing is, there are people (parents) in this world who would treat their own children just as Arnie was treated (and worse). Have been teary-eyed at this episode since it started. Michael Landon was a genius, as far as I'm concerned. He took issues that were relevant (and still are), and created decent shows to try and get people to look around - at the world and themselves and try to change things for the better JUST by being good people.

Arnie was played by John Franklin, born in 1959. As a child, Franklin had a growth hormone deficiency and his adult height is "barely 5 feet". He's played MANY roles over the years, including "Cousin Itt" on The Addams Family. His wiki page is interesting! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Franklin_(actor)

I saw this episode in early ‘86. I was 12, going on 13. It was the first television program that actually moved me to tears (despite trying to be the typical, cynical tween/early teen). Marvelous TV show, and great episode. Despite being saccharine and cloying, there’s just something about this program and Landon and French’s performances that allow it to transcend into something great.

I remember seeing this when I was very young. I remember how much it touched me. How it influenced me to care. However, I was so young I couldn't remember that it was an episode of highway to heaven. From time to time I would think of the boy in the box with his cat only wanting to be loved. How sad it was. A couple of weeks ago I started watching highway to heaven and came to this episode today. It brought back so many memories. This episode helped shape my life in a way. Thank you Michael Landon. RIP. What a man. And thanks to Victor French and John Franklin too.

We need more shows like this.. instead of the fear based, violent, over sexed crap that is on tv today. The homeless boy in this episode is so moving. I was in tears the whole episode.. We need more compassion and kindness and understanding in the world... I also love the episode about the special Olympics and the blonde boy who gets adopted. I 'm so glad that whole series of Highway to Heaven is up on Netflix.. So maybe people will engage in a show about love and helping your fellow man over let's say AHS... and rapes, morbidity and apocalyptic fear. I had the pleasure of knowing Michael Landon and I used to play piano and entertain for his Xmas parties. He was a funny, and caring man.. (though he smoked like a chimney) which is why he.. and Victor French passed away so early.

Maggie Otsuka I’m sorry that you were treated this way, nobody deserves to be. I was always that kid that befriended kids that were made fun of, because I just want to see everybody happy. Yes miss Maggie. So don't feel alone. I can remember when I was a kid and had to wear glasses. Some of the kids would call me 4 eyes. I wasn't really bullied. And I would just ignore them. But yes some kids for some reason are just mean. Something we just can't figure out. I only had a few fights in my school days. Once in the 5th, one in the 6th and the last in the 8th grade where I got do mad I pounded the shit out of the kid. Busted his nose, ripped his shirt and pulled some of his hair out. He had to go to the doctor. Not proud of it. But got great respect afterwards.

As far as I'm concerned. Michael Landon was an angel on earth. And he got the idea of creating a show Highway to Heaven and playing what he actually was. Showing people that Heaven does exist and shows how through these episodes. ML was a natural. That's why he was picked to play the angel Johnathan Smith. And this episode was perfect to show. I'm just thankful there were as many episodes as their were. Johnathan earned his wings and God called him home. Michael Landon was and always will be so missed. He was an angel here on earth. Such a wonderful episode. Be in peace Michael Landon.

Gone head and cry, Man! It's perfectly normal. I love it when a grown man aint afraid to expose his emotions besides anger. For all those so called macho, Tarzan apeman, brutes who think a man aint supposed to cry, a woman finds it to be a major turn on to see his gentle, soft side like when his heart is touched with joy or sadness. Crying is proof you have a heart. I would be concerned if I never saw u shed a tear ever.

If a child like Arnie showed up on my doorstep I would take him and his cat in. It would be like the story of Silas Marner. Abuse hurts the mind and body while rejection injures the soul. The good news is there are more Arnies out there who love unconditionally in spite of their cruel backstories. We just need to find them and love them. Arnie is one of those rare kids who remain sweet and loving. He does not gossip and has a sense of right and wrong. Just like Willy the Waver, the homeless guy from the other episode. I remember him commanding people to "Be nice!" Extreme suffering can go both ways. You have a choice---you can either away in self-pity and decide you want to hurt others, or you can allow it to give you the opportunity to show compassion, just like our Lord did. It's up to us. That said, this is Easter and the Lord's Resurrection. In spite of the pandemic, please, "Be nice!" Arnie and Willy would want us to🦋🌹📿

Decency, ethics, accountability and kindness seem to be a thing of the past. I was a kid in the 1950s and lived in a small city in upstate NY. I will be 69 next month late and my friends from the "old days" always say we were so lucky to have lived when we did with great family and friends. Working class neighborhoods were people watched out and helped each other. Our parents went through the depression and wars and worse but were always there to help and thank God to show love. This world today is a mess. Corrupt politicians, greedy shysters, puppet masters and sellouts. Shows like this bring back memories but let's face it the evil and punks would laugh at it. Harder times ahead and I feel so bad for kids today. At least some of us have great memories and will stand tall.

And a “straight from the heart” cheater, too! He cheated on his wife with a woman over 20 years younger during his Little House years, which created a rift between him and cast members, including Melissa Gilbert. He also severely underpaid some cast members (like the Harriet actress) which caused a lot of resentment towards him as well. Apparently the real-life Landon was no angel and kind of a dirt bag.🤷‍♂️

I felt so good after watching this episode! The scene where Arnie is very distraught when Larry records him breaks my heart. Reminds me of my basketball team a year ago. I have an autistic kid on my team and he's actually a very talented young man. Dribbles non stop, plays non stop, watches basketball on KZbin non stop! But he was a 7th grader last year, we had won a game but he couldn't get his shot going for 3-4 straight games and he was in the locker room being a little disruptive. Instead of me being a prick and yelling at him in front of everyone. I cleared the kids out, told them to get dressed and go see their parents, I needed a few minutes alone with him. It took me a minute to get through to him, I kept saying his name and saying *so and so*, look at me. What's wrong? He told me (in tears) "idk whats wrong with me, I'm not normally this bad." I go "so and so", I know how much you love this game and I know how much work you put into it, if you think that goes unnoticed with me, thats foolish, I have big plans for you next year, look at this year as a development year and just keep getting better, at some point it's all gonna click for you, knowing all the work you put into this game and if you'd like tomorrow at practice for 10-15 minutes I can show you some cool moves I taught myself and learned when I was a young man. He wiped his tears and hugged me. Fuck I'm getting teary thinking of it right now. This was definitely a fun time of my life and a stressful time but when it's all said and done I'll know I helped and changed lives. The year before a parent told an old HS friend of mine how much I've helped her son come out of his shell, loves to play basketball all the time now. It's gonna be very hard when I have to walk away from my coaching. But I've drawn a lot of inspiration from Michael Landon's character during this time. RIP to a beautiful man!!! :) And my teams are both undefeated this year :)
