Spoilers June of 1983, Maebara Keichi returns to Hinamizawa, but notices that things are different from how he remembers it. There have been a series of crimes happening on Watanagashi, causing fear and anxiety among the villagers. It is inevitable that Keichi and everyone in the village are affected by Oyashiro-sama's curse. However, this village was originally the progenitor of the Hinamizawa Syndrome, starting with Rika's ancestors. The hinamizawa syndrome affects all residents that originate and carry the "demon's" blood. Any form of distress, fear, anxiety, stress or mental issue would cause the residents to develop the hinamizawa syndrome symptoms according to their level of severity (Lvl1 fear, lvl2 anxiety, etc, until they reach level 5 and they develop full insanity, hallucinations, and the desire to scratch their necks open (because they feel maggots crawling inside their body). Rika, being the Queen carrier of the virus, is the one that tries to change Hinamizawa's fate. If she dies, everyone in the village develops Lvl 5 hinamizawa syndrome and thus must be contained so that the virus doesn't spread throughout the world (hence the killing of everyone in the village if the virus gets to that deadly stage). Rika, however, has the ability to travel to different realities (or the sea of fragments) in order to search for an ideal future where she isn't killed and can live happily with all of her friends and people she loves in the village. And so, when the cicadas cry, it usually ends with Rika and everyone being killed by a culprit, forcing her to jump to another reality in hopes of escaping the 100 years she has been eternally trapped to repeat the incidents of June 1983. If you want to know the culprit, you'll have to read the rest of the story, Nippaaaaaah~☆

But she dies every single time, because the culprit won't allow her to live, because of what Rika means to the culprit's overall investigation, I'm not so sure where this is in question cause it's the point of the whole story
