I watch these "speedruns" for entertainment and I'm part of the problem in that regard, but goddamn it IS annoying for a majority of players facing smurfs in any type of game. I've met a couple pros in Rocket League, and it's disheartening af for my teammates. Some have even jumped on other games after the match cus other high rated players want to give smurfing/speedruns with/without stipulations a go as well to see how they fare. In general it's toxic, I give cred to Naroditsky for doing it in order to teach other people and not for content alone and doesn't overdo it. How many "speedruns" has Hikaru had now? 10+? It's a bit much tbh despite the fact I find it entertaining which I understand is hypocritical of me to think. I personally find it fun to face better people regardless but 100% understand those that don't (ESPECIALLY not in a game like chess), and for this reason I'd rather people just play at their level seeing how many people they face that didn't sign up for this shit. Most want to play people at their level, learn and grow with the time they have. Win/lose doesn't matter as long as it's fair play. I got time on my hands but most people can't just sit down for hours a day to play a game. And then to get utterly destroyed when they find time in their schedule sucks. It doesn't matter if you get the rating back, time is still wasted on nothing and the fun has been taken away. It was great to see how it felt for them for once.

I don't hate Hikaru, in fact I have tremendous respect for his chess ability. But I do think it's hilariously hypocritical to ridicule beginners and weaker players by giving them a queen for nothing as an elite player and then get mad when in one of those game you face a smurf yourself

I am so confused by this comment section. Every good chess streamer does these speedruns, their opponents get their elo back as others have mentioned, and almost all of them react to some degree when they notice smurfing and/or cheating. Some take it with slightly better humour than others, but I don't think I've seen any of them react completely positively. One thing to remember is that they're often trying to make instructional content with speedruns, so if they have to really concentrate on the game (especially here where he had to sac a full queen) it's at least understandable he wouldn't be happy. Contrast this to e.g. when Hikaru blunders on a speedrun he's actually pretty funny about it (as are other chess streamers) so I doubt this is an ego thing.

My point was that I doubt this incident was about ego. I'm fairly certain he got to a pretty high rating on his queen sac Speedrun, and that he lost games on the way. If it was an ego thing, you would expect him to display similar behaviour every time he had difficulty on that run. I'm fairly sure that's not the case. The differentiating factor here is that someone essentially gatecrashed the run. Again, I'm not saying that absolutely anyone would have responded as grumpily as he did. But I don't think it's unreasonable, and I suspect other streamers might be irritated too in those circumstances.

Of course the reaction could have been more nicer, however, most of you are missing a critical detail: Everyone playing against Hikaru will get their points refunded by the elo system. The fact that Hikaru is smurfing doesn't exempt others from the rule. Point refunds only have been given to accounts who played against *Hikarus* smurf.
