As opposed to 960 or Fischer random chess, which was invented to prioritize the already present strategy of chess to avoid memorization, duck chess keeps the game mostly intact while adding a piece that follows no other rules of the game and complicates most understood strategies of chess. Duck chess is paradoxically whimsical and simple while being incredibly complex and completely changes the game with the smallest possible modification. From a fucking rubber duckie. For someone to be one of the best of the best in the world at chess strategy, the game being so similar while so different must be hard as hell to wrap his brain around without slipping back into conventional strategies.

The complexity of duck chess is insane. It's hardly surprising. Hikaru himself acknowledged its complexity. Normal chess has exponential possibilities of 20 possible first moves or let's just simplify to 20^n. Duck chess changes that by 32 additional squares for the first move or 31 for black. 52^n or 51^n for black is insanely more complicated than 20^n. And it's worse than that. In normal chess that 20 can increase byt tends towards 0 as pieces trade off, pawns are blocked etc. But the duck increases possibilities as pieces are removed. Even engines won't find lines as easily. Sure there are tactical themes but in terms of best move, not happening.

It might be because your intuition of strategy and tactics even play against you in duck chess, because they simple don't work. It is hard to rethink of of that when you played it for 30 years many hours every day.

More duck chess! I think its interesting how the heuristics change. Also calculation is harder. It's interesting as a viewer because we are closer to the level of hikaru, so you can calculate alongside and stuff

No, it loses the rook to Qxf8@d2 because it isn't defended by the bishop anymore. Don't forget that in duck chess the king doesn't have to move but the check can be blocked by the duck.
