Stockfish evaluates it as losing for white (-2.7) at high depth. Pretty crazy hikaru can defend this well. Most of the time he wasn't even playing the top 3 suggested moves yet still managed a draw against a top level engine.

Yes, if that is his intention from the start :D I don't think he can draw against a strong bot by playing normally, and switching to a draw-strategy once things start going pear-shaped.

I think he has a friend using Torch’s moves and putting them into the account. On the website the default elo for new accounts is 1600 if you say you’re an advanced player

Engines don't just miss that there's a 3 fold repetition. It evaluated that sacrificing or making the pawn push would put it at a disadvantage, even if it was only like -0.2. Modern computers will only avoid a draw, if the other moves don't decrease the evaluation, that's why it chose to make the draw

In Universal Chess Interface, engine need to be fed the game’s move history in order to detect 3fold repetition for each move. It’s likely that Torch only received Fen strings, making it impossible to detect 3fold repetitions.

One issue with neural network engines is that they are statistically trained so accidental threefold or as all engines would do preferring draw over taking a losing position are possible. But traditional engines can guarantee avoid threefold and fifty move draws at least to some depth of movss unless no legal moves are available.

In the first game, its just insane how hikaru sees he lost even tho its nothing concrete like losing tactic. I checked with the engine and hes up a point for long time in that line but still losing and hikaru knew it

He knows he's lost because it's a bot and he hasn't managed to lock the position. He doesn't have to analyze anything more advanced than that.

First game: plays normal, gets crushed. Second game: plays like a turtle and builds a friggin wall and then says "uh yeah, good luck winning, I'm not interested in winning anyways". Moral of the story: if you want to not lose versus an opponent more powerful than you, play truly to not lose, even if it means giving up on the notion of victory.

Maybe Torch acknowledged that the position is drawn, and chose to draw the game. There is no comtempt factor in NNUE based engines at all, so Torch is not doing any comtempt related things.
