Yes, more Sugarloaf Peaks. We have a pair of them this time, and they’re in Cleveland National Forest. This challenging route on the popular San Juan Trail, once a native path traversing the Santa Anas, brings you to Old Sugarloaf and (new) Sugarloaf, which you can bag and enjoy some great views in the process. It’s a challenging hike into a remote section of this rugged and underrated area.

Did this hike last Saturday with my son and we loved it. Tough scramble up old Sugarloaf. We both ended up a bit bloody after falls, but worth it. It ended up being a great father son day. Thank you for the videos, we go on the weekend where you post during the week. Thanks again.

Great video. I love San Juan Trail. I've only done Old Sugarloaf once and it was in the fog and after rain so we slipped a lot and laughed like crazy people. Good times. I appreciate seeing the view in your video. Lots of good memories at San Juan

Awesome video! I remember hiking the "Sugarloaves" from the upper TH at Blue Jay CG and it was also an epic, beautiful hike! I gotta try it from the lower TH now!

Nice, yea I was considering creating the guide from the top, but I thought the climb back out after doing Old Sugarloaf might be too tough (or soul-crushing for me...). Might do a big loop from Hotsprings / Chiquito / Candy Store / Fox Spring / Lucas this summer as an overnighter. Need to do some more recon first though.

@@Hikingguy I won't lie, the uphill on the way back to Blue Jay CG was a bit tough especially after the quite long distance to get to the peaks, but it was a cloudy and cool October Day in the low 50's F (and often foggy and drizzly day), so heat was not a factor on the often exposed trail! That big loop you mentioned would make a great video topic! Just be careful with the summer heat!! That Old Sugarloaf use trail felt like it went on and on- it was really tough and LONG!!

I did this one on Mothers Day perfect weather and only saw 3 mountain bikers. I found a piece of gear just below the scramble up old sugar if you lost it send a message and I will try and get it back to you.

Do you have videos on how to hike unmarked remote trails? There are a lot of trails I wanna hike in the backcountry of Nevada, but they are not marked(no actual trail), I do have a handheld hiking GPS and an SOS beacon, but I still don't feel confident about doing it by myself with no experience.

I actually avoid promoting hikes that have off-trail sections because I want to minimize the impact I make and adhere to LNT principles. I'd say to start, do something short. Walk 1 mile cross-country on flat. And then try mixing up the terrain. If you record with the GPS, you can always backtrack on the track line.

This is one i do regularly with the exception of OSP, i don't find it nearly as nice as NSP... not to mention the scramble to OSP is challenging. IMO OSP is one you do if you haven't done it but i don't feel the steep climb up is worth the peak, it is an ugly peak vs NSP. Real nice trail with comfortable incline, great views and generally empty most of the way if you start early... which i always do. NSP has amazing boulders and lots of places to lay down and enjoy the view / take a break... reminds me of San Mateo peak but better. Nice views, good elevation gain, good distance make it a good training hike for me.

Yea OSP is tough, summit is not bad though. The climb is usually too brutal for me and I give it a skip in favor of NSP. But for those who never bagged it, def worth hitting at least once,
