Hike to Eagle Peak Saddle, Mount Rainier National Park, June 2023 | Sunshine and Mountains

Hello friends! The last day of June turned out to be a perfect day for this hike! I hiked it last year at the end of the summer, and it turned out to be the first day of wildfires in the area. They started overnight and I hadn't heard the news before I got started. The air was thick with smoke, and while I could see Mount Rainier, the air was hazy and I couldn't see any of the surrounding peaks. This time the air was fresh and clear and in addition to great views of Rainier, off to the south I could see Mount Adams, Mount Hood and Mount Saint Helens.
For those who don't know, when they say 'saddle' in geography, they mean the lowest point along a ridge or between two mountain peaks. Here, the maintained trail ends at the low point between two peaks and is a great place for a snack!

Congrats on all that elevation gain! Beautiful relatively smooth trail. Thanks for pointing out the plants, chipmunk and birds. The view from the top is amazing. Always amazed by mount st helens. very beautiful hike and the forest was so quiet. It was great seeing the views, including Mt Adams and the flowers. I love how you identify the various wildflowers along the way. The upper areas looked just as lovely as the dense forest towards the bottom.

Hi Nicole! Thanks! Lots of the hikes at Rainier, and other trails around here, start in these thick forests! It’s really interesting to walk among these big old trees! The trail is really well designed- though it goes up pretty steadily, it’s not too rough, whew. I’ve just been learning about the flowers as I’ve been hiking more - glad to know you like to see the names too! I loved the views- if you get the opportunity to hike this on a clear day, you’ll love it I’m sure!

A friend of mine met a cat on the trail the other week...a cougar he thought...but by his description and the fact that it ran away, most likely a bobcat. Wonderful to see so many great wildfires this time of year. Well, at least you can still see the mountains as my same friend said that most everything in north BC is clouded with wildfire smoke. Lovely to hear the birdsong too!! Such a gorgeous day. We've had such a mixed bag lately...rain, scorching sun, thunderstorms to beat the band, and fee-like temps of 40c+! Otis and I lay low during these times and try to keep ahead of the heat in the shade and AC of the house. Another perfect mountain adventure! Bruce and Otis

Hi Bruce and Otis! Pretty exciting to see a cat up in the mountains, wilderness! So far I haven’t had that experience- and I guess I’m happy about that- I’ll remember to keep an eye out! Too bad it’s been bad weather for you, and bad wildfires in BC. So far this summer our air is still clear, thank goodness. We haven’t had any rain for the longest time, and it’s been in the high 70s or low 80s. It does cool off overnight but we’ve been having to really keep up with watering the flower plants and trees. Perfect day indeed and dam near perfect views, what an awesome place to take a hike. Good to see no smoke this year on your hike and you can clearly see Mount Rainier this time. Those views were outrageous and nice to see you out in full sun, I remember you getting a right soaking a couple of videos back! Loved seeing Mount Rainier still with so much snow on the top part of it and you sure were blessed with not only perfect weather but immense views too, cheers Alan

Wow - another must do hike if I ever get out there! Those views were 'splendiferous'. What a treat to get to watch a Hermit Thrush singing. I rarely see them - they seem so shy, but their song is my favorite bird song. Limited bugs and people - now that's a great hike. Thanks for sharin Jennifer - I enjoyed it a bunch!
