Located in Orange County, Occoneechee Mountain State Natural Area offers a quick escape into nature with trails winding through forests of mountain laurel and rhododendron. Our hiking adventure lead us to the highest point in Orange County. The Occoneechee Mountain summit is also reported to be the highest point between Hillsborough and the Atlantic Ocean at 867ft. You must do the overlook trail this view is the main attraction of the park. Also the Quarry which you are on top of at the overlook fenced area is another highlight of the park. We discovered near the Eno River at the boardwalk area there is a lot of broken glass. This is from the old cotton mill from 1896. The glass was left from the mill community built along the Eno! This is why glass can tell a story. The Occoneechee Indians built a settlement about 2 miles down stream in a river bend area as well.
The quarry dates to before the Civil War and was abandoned about 1908. Rock in the quarry is composed of sericite, quartz and pyrophyllite, and was used as fill material during construction of nearby railroad tracks and for general fill material in the Hillsborough area. The boulders and gravel in the section of the quarry fell in a rockslide in February 2001. At some point the Quarry Trail was then removed from the park maps. It is listed on Alltrails as the Quarry Spur Trail still. The overlook, reached by the Overlook Trail off of the Loop, looks about above the quarry and the Eno River, visible through the trees.
