Seeing Mount Pinatubo in your video made me say “Hello old friend.” I was a 26-year old Navy journalist stationed at Subic Bay during the eruption all those years ago. I arrived in the Philippines in December of 1990. Seven months later, the volcano erupted. I was working for FEN (Far East Network) at Subic as a television reporter and radio DJ. I stayed in the Philippines until the US troop pullout was complete. I did a lot of coverage of the volcano both before and after the eruption. I even flew over the volcano on helicopters on two occasions with a big video camera strapped to me, hanging out of the side of the helicopter. Being there on the ground when it erupted was a nightmarish experience. During the darkness of the eruption, it made me wonder if we would all survive. It’s not every day that you go through such a cataclysmic event. That big blue lake was a small blue lake the last time I flew over. The landscape, from miles around the volcano, looked like the landscape of Mars. It is nice seeing all the vegetation growing. Thanks for the video of Mount Pinatubo. It brought back a lot of memories.

Years ago I was at Walter Reed, I was talking to a retired Air Force security guy, they secured the gates and were the last American personnel to leave Clark AB. They hiked all the way to Subic, interestingly he said, behind them were hundreds of locals following them, understandably, he said, everything was just chaotic. When they stopped to rest and eat, everyone was just staring at them....They ended up sharing whatever provisions they had (he got emotional at this time) I was born and grew up in Baguio, I miss Camp John Hay, I was in the Army back in the mid 80's, used to get MAC flights to Clark and hop on a Phil Rabbit or Victory liner bus to my parents home in Baguio. Good times!

I was a college student in Manila when Mt. Pinatubo erupted. Day literally turned into night and we thought it was snowing but it turned out to be ashfall. It was one of the most scariest moments for me and a lot of Filipinos. I'm just in awe of how something so terrifying years ago turned out to be something so magnificent today. God is good! Enjoy your tour of Northern Luzon. Guess we'll see you in Banawe, Sagada, Baguio, or Vigan next??

Wow, how time swiftly flew. I'm turning 40 next year and I was only 6 when the volcano erupted. I was so mad at my classmate behind me because I thought he was pushing my desk/chair. It was Language quiz when the big earth tremors came, so the only thing I got to bring home with me after all the panic was my jumbo pencil. Life as a student had been disrupted shortly after and we had to contend esp. with the frequent aftershocks, some feeble, some strong. I vividly recall the suffocating sulfur air and the rain of ash and rocks---which I collected happily because I thought the crystals in it were diamonds but in fact were only phenocrysts. Anyway, thank you for bringing to fore childhood memories. It was a devastating time, but we did not feel hopeless due to resilience. Thank you for taking us all with you on your Pinatubo adventure. Take care and enjoy as you explore more of the country.

Yes I'm 43 now I don't even remember that time when it erupted. Our grandma's home in Bacolor was submerged in Ashfall and ashes everywhere in our house and street in Laguna.

Im at my 41 now. I remember in Palawan it was morning after the night of its eruption, everything around our house filled with ashfalls. Banana leaves fall off and carabaos cannot eat grass all the vegetation were severely destroyed.

What a epic experience that must have been. I have family living in Manila and Baguio and they went through the eruption with the amount of ash in the air and all. I was visiting from the US a few years after it happened taking the bus from Manila to Baguio driving through the ash and new landscape caused by the eruption was an experience to itself. Definitely a lifetime memory.

An exciting experience indeed. The trek towards Mt. Pinatubo is sheer adventure. Nothing fancy but it is all worth it, especially to people from older-age categories, such as myself. The tourism sector may have to make the trek more exciting by giving visitors a guided tour of the crater lake itself - just like the one in Hawaii where tourists come near the lake of lava and steam.😀😀
