This was an awesome hike deep in the hills of Arizona. It was cold and rainy on and off, but the desert hike was fantastic. I found numerous large flat rocks with Indian grinding holes worn in them and also explored a cave or two. Finding a Mule deer buck with a nice rack in its final resting place at the base of a cliff and figuring out his story is also part of this adventure. I hope you enjoy!
About Aquachigger:
I enjoy metal detecting for historical items like gold coins, relics, silver coins, and other buried treasures. I also metal detect for gold and silver nuggets and even meteorites. I like to make videos that promote my choice of lifestyle that includes outdoor adventure, metal detecting, yapping, searching for river treasure, SCUBA diving, exploring abandoned places, hiking, caving, caring for animals and pets, and observing the things outdoors that often go unnoticed by most people who are not familiar with outdoor adventures and nature. I keep my KZbin "Aquachigger" channel family-friendly and hope you subscribe if you like my style.
BTW, you can also catch me here, / chiggsarmy ,but I may get a little edgier there. FB isn't a place for kids anyway...lol.

Once more you did us proud. A very great adventure. Things that I will never see. Thanks for taking this olde bloke along. Lost mines here in Australia are not too far far fetched as after WWI when 65,000 of my countrymen didn't come home a lot of payable gold mines were never reopened. Packed away for the duration and never came back. The returned men were disheartened we they realized the rich got richer and the poor were cannon fodder. They were not as keen as before.

@jeremylamothe2460
@jeremylamothe2460 3 жыл бұрын
I'm sure that these were indeed used as you describe but in the setting of a riverbed I believe these are more likely a natural phenomenon where there is a stone harder then the baserock that tumbles around in the indent in the rock due to river current and essentially drills those holes over time.
@AZRockhoundExpeditions
@AZRockhoundExpeditions 3 жыл бұрын
That is probably true in most place, but not in Arizona. You find ruins, you’ll find grinding holes, mostly next to a river or creek or in the bed. The women worked next to or in the water because it was hot. I mean wouldn’t you? I’m a born and raised native here in Arizona, it’s hot!🔥

Yahtzee. Those are/were eddies in the water that carved those, not people.
@marypatten9655
@marypatten9655 2 жыл бұрын
It is more likely a combination of the 2. Probaly more grinding than the rocks. You have to realize the women probably each had their own grinding area. So a large village would have many many families, each with its own grinding spot. God bless

Definitely does seem like an awful lot of grinding holes for such a small area but then again if you had an entire tribe to feed (a minimum of two meals per day 24/7/365) I suppose there would have been a lot of grinding going on.

The thing about Metates in AZ riverbeds is that it can be a bit tough to tell if it's an actual Metate - or if a hard smaller stone was trapped in a once smaller, naturally occurring hole and then proceeded (over the course of many Hundreds of years) to erode it into a bigger oval or roundish shaped hole. Water over time is an amazingly powerful force. Not to say these aren't real, once used by people, Metates. They could be.

in the cortez, durango area of colorado(next to mesa verde, almost my nephew built a house. when he dug the trench for his foundation up came a HUGE metata. no mano. and he made the tranches for his sprinkler system there was so much worked stone it was ridiculous. we walked along the highway another time, and found SO much pottery shards. it breaks my heart to know someone worked hard to make those things and even tried to add some beauty to the finished product. and there lies the results of all the hard work. you cant dig ANYWHERE there w/o digging up tons of artifacts. in that valley, if its on your property, its yours. thats how much there is.
