Every time Backpacking, Hiking and Camping season comes around it’s time to get out those items that have been hibernating and prepare them for your upcoming adventure whether that’s a day hike, an overnight camp or a long distance thru-hike or backpacking trip.

I work in a shop at the start of a long distance trail and you would be surprised how many people head out only to come back a couple of hours later because the sole on their shoe detached. Another advice, if your shoes been in storage for a longer time, give them a go before heading out ;)

Along the Appalachian Trail, there are now 9 tick borne diseases. Many worse than Lyme. I have a nifty little gadget that allows me to drain partial cans of fuel into others to make full cans. They are about $10 and are going to be helpful if there is another fuel shortage this year. Good video. Happy Trails. Good Luck, Rick

Wow, somebody's a little OCD just a wee bit 🤣. I'm teasing you Tinkerbell because I suffer from that too I like to take care of my gear. I even lube ALL my zippers from tent to rain gear !! I spray permethrin bug spray on the inner netting, the UNDERSIDE of my tent fly, cuz skeeters love 💕 that in-between area, and my ground sheet. The product is by Sawyer. Yes THAT Sawyer, the most used water filter in packing history 🤔. It's pet friendly for my dog but for whatever reason it is not for cats. As always read the care label on all your gear and follow through. Read whatever chemicals or whatever solutions that you use on your gear pay attention to It !!!!... By the way Mary it's just one of the things I love about you OCD in just the right places 👍🏽☺️👏🤓🤗... I have a feeling I'm not the only person who wipes the faucet down after each use and has a special rag hanging on the cabinet door just for the purpose 😂 lol. Anywhay, with the money $$$$$ you spent on quality gear you really do want to take care of it. It means less problems out on the trail due to that TLC at home !!! Thanks Mary it's nice to know there's one person out there who I would entrust my gear to borrow 👍🏽🤠 ATB , Trakyboy 🤭🙃

No idea what you mean (she says checking everything several times over 😆). Glad I'm not the only one out there with OCD tendencies!

As usual, great tips and advice, some I’ve never given any thought to, like cleaning zippers on your tent and waterproofing items that you think will last forever. So thanks a million for reminding us all to be diligent with our hard earned equipment. 🙏🏻🥰

Insightful video. The water method is great for when you are on trail. I use 100g Jetboil canisters as much as possible. A full canister weighs around 199g. Before I leave I weigh my canister(s) and subtract the current weight from the full weight to see how many grams of fuel have been used. Since the result is a fraction of 100, it gives me the percentage for how full the can is. The canister has a chart for converting landmark percentages to boils. Have fun out there. 🚶🏻‍♀🚶🏻‍♂

Great idea is doing the flotation test to measure the amount of fuel in a canister!

Handy one for when on trail and you can't weigh it - just as long as it is in a pan or pool of still water and not a raging river 😆

😁👍 Thanks Mary for sharing your knowledge and experience. These tips are easily forgotten at times. Before a day hike or wildcamp I always prepare a night or two before hand after work all the gear I need. Reproofing us a must esspecially in the UK climate as its so unpredictable. I always carry spare tent pegs incase of loss breakage or simply as extra guy points if in rough weather .. All good tips Mary 👍👍👍😁
