In my latest adventure I hike to the summit of Fleetwith Pike in the Lake District, UK, before then heading on to summit Haystacks.
This video serves as a good 'How to' climb Fleetwith Pike the 'easy way' from Honister Slate mine, cutting out 700 feet of ascent for those who aren't as able to take on a more strenuous walk from Gatesgarth. This hike quickly turned into a race against the winter sun as I began to lose light en route to the second summit. Join me on this adventure as I pick out the landmarks and viewpoints in this beautiful setting see a lovely sunset and have a laugh at my DAYLIGHT FAIL.

Thanks so much Sam. I'm glad you enjoyed it. That's my aim I guess, to inspire people to get out in the hills and try and provide some substance and value along the way I'm still very much learning but just trying to improve and tweak things with every video.

Fabulous vlog. Really informative about the area and the paths. Rarely see that in a vlog. I was looking for a walk for this Saturday and this could be it. Pleased I found your channel. Brilliant. Cheers Peter.

Part of the reason I do this is to inspire a route for someone else. Glad you found it helpful and enjoy the walk. Try not to get caught up there in the dark like I did 😂

It's a great little summit isn't it. I only wish I'd managed my time better when shooting it and been able to get some drone shots up there. Next time perhaps. Cheers!

I certainly wouldn't call this a daylight fail. I'm one for colours and whilst yes it would be nice in sunlight I love the sunset shots across the Lakes and mountains. Definitely not a fail in my book. Still intrigued in the music and equipment but a beautiful hike. Do you do a gear rundown at all? Even if just listed and not vloged? I'm starting to acquire my kit. I said I wouldn't buy outright until I'm committed so every couple of weeks I add a bit. Do you ever use trekking poles at all? What's your thoughts on them? I've watched a lot of PCT hikers but I'm being drawn to the beauty in our own back yard. Don't need a location but how many miles is it from home to the Lakes? I'm nearer to Peak District so I'm about 1 1/2hrs from there as I have to drop my wife off at work in Wolverhampton before I can come north to start any hike. I have to plan it as I need to get back for 5pm. So where I'd like to hit three or four peaks I'm limited to one or two by time constraints. The frozen stalactites were beautiful and such a peaceful place to be laid to rest.

I'd like to do a gear run down. I've always just doubted whether it is interesting enough but yes I should consider it in the future. I have quite a lot of components to it to be fair. I don't use trekking poles as I often need my hands free for cameras and climbing etc. I carry a lot of stuff so I choose to travel light although my knees are starting to feel it with each hike these days

Thanks for this Alex. Really helpful. Quick question. I’m going up here soon with my wife who suffers with vertigo on open spaces. At or around 22.55 on here just behind you is the path. Tell me, is that a sharp drop from the path or is it less of a problem? Any help / guidance would be great. Thanks again.

There are sections of that path where it does drop off quite steeply from the path yes. Most of it is fine. Either side of the path is relatively flat (but rocky) terrain. Gently sloping toward the edge perhaps. There are just a couple of sections on the way up to haystacks where you are a bit closer to an edge. I'd be tempted to look into alternative routes that come further in away from the edge as there are all sorts of paths snaking across these fells

@@alexmagrath thanks so much for replying so promptly. Your video is really helpful. It’s my final two Wainwrights and so my wife has said she would like to do it with me ( and a couple of others ). I think she may struggle on that stretch but if we can’t easily find another path she has said she will sit and wait which would be a shame but I’d rather that than her have an attack. Keep up the great work. Very much appreciated.

@colinwardale I'd like to think she xan make it. There were no points where I was uneasy about being on the edge on fleetwith or haystacks. And if the trail gets close to the edge on the path to haystacks I'm sure you can find alternative paths further in. It's a monuments occasion. Do your best to both complete it
