Hay Stacks has a special place in my heart. My Dad, who first got me, squealing and complaining, into my first set of boots, reached only three summits before the cancer that took him. Hay Stacks was the last of these. It was one of only three summits that I could share with him instead of the dozens upon dozens he should rightly have had the chance to have enjoyed. Part of the reason I climbed all of them was because he couldn't.

Nice vid Glenn, love those epic drone shots. A little bit on Fanny Mercer The white cross on the side of Fleetwith Pike and overlooking Buttermere marks the sad story of Fanny Mercer. Fanny was a young servant girl who worked for Mr. Bowden Smith, a school teacher from Rugby, and accompanied his family on their summer vacation in the Lakes. One fateful day in September 1887, the party were walking to the top of the crag above Honister Quarries and were descending down the steep ridge of Fleetwith Pike. Fanny was not an accomplished walker and during this part of the journey she jumped down from a ledge and lost her balance. She fell a distance of around twenty feet amongst rocks and rabble until she reached the bottom of the fell side. By the time the others had reached her, she was badly injured and taken to the nearby Gatesgarth Farm, but sadly died before medical assistance could arrive. Her body was returned to Rugby where she was buried and the white cross erected in her memory in Buttermere. To this day the symbol stands as a warning to walkers that the mountains of the Lake District can be perilous unless you are alert and mindful of the dangers.

Your videos in my view are some of the best on KZbin - love the quality and length - keep em coming - can you do Lords Rake up Scafell soon then round by foxes tarn up to Scafell Pike? Now that is a route - I did it so long ago it was even before the chock stone!!

Brilliant video, top quality. I'd like to do this in the next week or so. During my research, some have said that Haystacks part can be challenging particularly in wet conditions and should only be done by those with mountain experience. Would you agree?
@BlackCrag2 жыл бұрын
I don't think it's challenging at all, even in wet conditions. It is rocky under foot and can get a bit slippery but not dangerous and certainly no more dangerous than other places in the Lakes.

Fanny Mercer, age 18, and other servants of Rev P Bowden Smith, given a day off, climbed Honister Crag and came down Fleetwith, 8 September 1887. Her alpenstock jammed in a crack in a rock and pushed her off the rock face. Sad story told here.
