Hiking in Iceland EP 16: Hiking the Mælifell volcano - drive via f232 and Bláfjallafoss

I wish I found this before. I drove to maelifell just a few weeks back. The weather was horrible, rain and wind with low clouds. I wanted to climb it but I had no idea how to. If I ever return to Iceland, I will try doing it (weather permitting) 👍

Hope you can return and hike up there!.. but yeah the weather in that area is often like that and rather unpredictable...I also made two attempts and had to wait for a suitable day in the area

Beautiful video! We’re going next summer, but our rental forbid us to drive F210, so we’re thinking of driving F232 up to the junction where F232 meets F210 and drive back south again. Would we see Maelifell from the junction? Is there any place we could park our camper van to maybe fly the drone? Timestamp 3:00, is that the junction in the distance? All help will help, thank you 😊

Thanks! That junction is actually on the opposite side of Maelifell, it's the one connection road f201 to the Strútur hut. I honestly do not remember if it's possible to see it from the junction, but if not you would just need to walk a bit along road f210 to get up to a vantage point nearby. You'll definitely be able to see it with a drone though

Very nice! I will be there the next week with a 4x4 Dacia Duster, do you think it's possibile to cross the rivers on the f232? thanks in advance Edoardo

Thanks! That should be possible but really depends also on how much it rained in the previous days. Check the water level and try to cross it on foot before attempting it with the car, to see if it is feasible and to sport bigger rocks. Also, there is quite a steep angle to enter and exit that river, so check the best angle too before trying.
