Those stairs near the top were recently installed. Before 2020, they weren’t there. Personally, I was heartbroken to encounter steps that were built so steep, almost as if to deliberately demoralize hikers. The steps are dangerous, and in winter, could get icy and the thought of breaking my head open on one of them really makes me angry at the city, because they totally ruin the Spencer’s butte experience for me.

They were actually built in 2015. Before the defined path was installed it was a "free for all" near the top. People were destroying the sensitive natural habitat up there by hiking all over it. It has recovered a lot in the 7 years since the trail was built. It also was much more dangerous before the trail was built, more people used to get hurt and needed "rescuing" before the new trail.

@@LeeFousteThat's not true. The black steps were put in sometime in 2020 because I have been hiking there since 2015 and they were not there

I've done this hike multiple times and want to go again soon as it's been a while. I found your video to show my youngest daughter who is almost 11. We are gonna take a trip up soon but with a few other people and plenty of supplies. Rattlesnakes hide under rocks and there have been predators seen during the day. Not worried but I need to be prepared for anything 😁 I was born and raised here! Where you two from? And yes the squirrels do come up to you!! We gave them grapes 😬 I hope that was ok lol

It is a great hike. I (Frankie) am from Brooklyn New York and Alex is from Toronto Canada 🇨🇦. Thanks for watching and feeling wild life isn't a good idea just because they won't fend for themselves and it could create a life or death situation for them. Just keep it in mind next time. It's OK if you didn't understand that aspect of it before but now you know lol.
