This was all pretty much one type of California chaparral or another. The first part was the transitional area on the very edge of the Colorado Desert (part of the greater Sonoran Desert). It's still intermixed with some chaparral plants like the Deerweed the bumblebees love at the beginning. It is in the pea family and is great for nitrogenating your garden soil. I have lots of it in my garden. You then go back into regular Chamise chaparral at the water gate, and get of bit of oak and grassland around warner springs. North of Warner Springs you get into some old growth chaparral with big Red Shanks shrubs the size of trees. Chamise and Red Shanks are the only two plants in their genus (Adenostoma). You're back into pretty standard Chamise chaparral again to Mike's Place. - Good on you for knowing the birds. The Spotted Towhee and Bushtits are some of the most common chaparral birds. The California Towhee is also common.
