Bike Racing Without Mercy have you ever used RGT? they have the magic roads feature where you can create a race on pretty much any road with a GPX file with some pretty decent auto generated landscapes. I’m considering creating a bit of a mini series of races on classic UK climbs. Might have to try and twist your arm into racing!

Kelvin Newman hi Kelvin - and indeed I like RGT - it’s a nice simulation 👌But it’s not easy to live stream it due to the way the screen fills my computer and won’t let me get to the other apps needed . I think it’s getting an update. But yes will be nice to race soon

You learnt so much from just 2 proper hill climb events (vastly different to Strava Segment Challenges). Hearing you dissect the effort on Leith where you thought you pushed too hard was bang on, and it takes so much to be able to travel, do a 5min effort, travel, then do a 20min effort. Motorhome is needed for optimum performances I reckon :)
@BikeRacingWithoutMercy

Cheers Ed 🙏. I’ve just ordered an F1 Style Motorhome 😁. Agreed it’s very different hitting a hill climb from a standing start with all the nerves and pressure vs a rolling start into a causal KOM attempt . Have the taste for it though ... need to bring up my 2-5min power 💪

@BikeRacingWithoutMercy
@BikeRacingWithoutMercy 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much Dominique 🙏. And yes Porlock is the full 6.4km - and we considered the power overlay for it. But it was pretty steady at 310W for the first 3.5km and 250-300W for the second plus I’d posted the full 19min climb of Porlock in a recent video ahead of the event - with power overlay (was beautiful - check it out ) 👌

Great effort on the hill climb Phil. And yes it's always super stressful when you're running late for an event. I always aim to get there an hour before so a proper warm up can be done. And yes I think I'd you're going to do a lot of hill climb racing a lighter steed is required. Good excuse for a customs build 😉
@BikeRacingWithoutMercy
@BikeRacingWithoutMercy 4 жыл бұрын
That was the intent Tony - but poor planning on my part and then forgetting my cycling shoes put paid to any warm up let alone a recce 🤪. And I was shocked at how much the Colnago weighed - so I reckon I can be a bit more competitive with the Wilier .... got it back today... but the rear derailleur got broken in transit...

@@BikeRacingWithoutMercy How does the Zwift Leith Hill compare to the real thing, is it close if trainer difficulty is set to 100%?
@BikeRacingWithoutMercy
@BikeRacingWithoutMercy 4 жыл бұрын
Mark Alford good question👌. I run a 32 cassette on the rear in real life, and reckon that 100% TD on Zwift is reasonably close - but still a tad easier. If anyone is running 50% -75% TD on Zwift and has a 28 in real life they will have an unpleasant shock when they hit double digit gradients! In real life with a 32 I need to get out the saddle once the gradient gets above 10-11% - because I run out of small gears to spin. If Zwift is set at 75% I can stay seated and spin all the way up the Radio Tower on the 13-16% gradients. But at 100% TD (which is what I’ve been using on Zwift the last 6weeks) I’ll be standing because I run out of small gears. So on balance Leith Hill is pretty realistic at 100% TD - but probably still understates the brute force needed to overcome the steeper ramps. Also the Zwift graphics don’t quite do justice to just how pretty the real climb is. All said - I’m super grateful to have a virtual training app that’s as close as it is. It’s down to rider choice to turn up the TD 👍

Cheers Chris - it was a small victory to keep Fin reasonably close at the top of Porlock! Believe it or not - the first 3.5km I went too hard on Porlock (average 310W) and then had to lay off and regroup ... The Hill Climbs are a lot of fun - not as full on as the outdoor crit races (I expect less enjoyable if you have a chance of a top 10!!) 🤪
@MichaelBoogerd
@MichaelBoogerd 4 жыл бұрын
Bike Racing Without Mercy interesting - it looks a bit shy of a 20min effort so similar to an ftp test, where I guess you’d expect to manage 310w avg (cca 294w ftp), give or take some decrease of ftp, that was riding around 105-110% which is about right for the length of the effort. One thing on the polarized approach I noted, holding high Z4 or just above ftp for long durations became harder than the stuff in Z5 or above that I was training specifically for I.e. short 5-8min Vo2 intensity.
@BikeRacingWithoutMercy
@BikeRacingWithoutMercy 4 жыл бұрын
Chris Clarke thats really interesting about the polarised blunting the zone 4 endurance a little. The Wednesday before the Porlock climb I completed 20mins outside at 303W - but deliberately didn’t drain the tank in the final 5mins - and oddly enough the day after Porlock I rode the climb again at 303W - but didn’t go as deep at the beginning. I reckon my FTP is c290W. Also I’ve found that an all out max max effort like the one on Leith Hill blunts me a bit the day after - even though it’s only a sub 5min effort !

Super video. Really nice to see the real version of Leith Hill. Did you both share an accommodation with Ed and Charlie? Looks great. What a diffrence in atmosphere between Leith Hill and Porlock. Leith Hill seems nice too, but at the Porlock hill climb it looks as if the people and cyclists of the Exmoor villages had come out. As a sixty year old with near copd longues (stupid ex smoker me) I know the burning feeling all too well, Phill. Especially when it is colder. 18 somewhat 💪💪💪👍👍If you think you can do better it is an extra reason to return next year, isn't? Thank you both for this video.

As ever thanks so much for your lovely kind comments and support Agnes🙏. Yes we stayed in the same house in Porlock (it had separate bathrooms etc). The burning lung feeling was very acute - and I was still coughing the day of Porlock! So sorry to hear you have to deal with that . Minehead and Porlock were so so welcoming and created a wonderful atmosphere for the event 👌. And Jayne and I stayed in Porlock the rest of the week - so in the next vids you’ll see some more climbs (and I did have a second full gas tilt at Porlock Toll Road - albeit didn’t film the effort ! ) . Will definitely be back next year 💯

I wouldn't be too disappointed Phil. Interesting that you said that you felt you went a bit too hard at the beginning and tailed off at the end. Have you watched BikeRadar Hillclimb series? Cheers Richard - I’ve watched a few of them, but not that one - will check them out. I do tend to have my good and bad days outside: In the crits over the winter I found one weekend would be stellar and the next a bit of a struggle! The hill climb was the same - happy with Leith (especially now you told me I was right to drain the tank and not be super strong at the end😊) but I knew better on Porlock - and ignored my own pacing strategy 🧐
