What really stunned me is that her arrogance and deep-rooted unacceptane of failure revealed even more of the unfortunate degeneration of US politics system than her speech, which alone actually uncovered a great deal about disturbing trends behind US electoral system if you listened carefully enough - the state of extreme division, mistrust, confusion and anger against the other political polar and the willingness to wage an outspoken propaganda war that exerts her own vision and ideology on the entire country without any critical introspects, let alone any humbility or respect for the system that their forefathers have designed. I have to say I am very disappointed after hearing Hillary talking here. She spoke out of such arrogance, supremacy and fixed-mindset. She said, paraphrasing here, Xi Jingpin rose to power, “forced” the Chinese communists to either get in line with him or get lost. But we can say the same to US: either agree with US or we will bash you down. The beginning of wisdom is from learning other’s language and history and culture in order to understand why others think the way they think. From Hillary’s talk here, there is a strong sense of: this is the way we America wants the world to be, hence you all must adopt to the American ideology, otherwise we will contain and punish you. The ancient Greek had trained their kids how to think rationally by asking them to argue both for and against an idea, not just taking one sided view. I think it is unhelpful nor convincing to simply label other countries “authoritarianism “ and force the world to choose side. A stable world is an inter-dependent world with US as a part of it, but NOT on top of it.

Hegemony is the willing acceptance of a system and world police means that the US can be called in by its allies if they suffered a large enough quantity of grievances against an agressor. I have issues with America's foreign policy. But if you are going to watch an interview with a former American politician, they are naturally going to advocate for an American world view, not understand where China is coming from. A Chinese politician would advocate for a Chinese world view. They wouldn't be advocating for a fair and balanced world, but as fair and balanced world that's beneficial to their country's interests. The ancient Greeks taught their kids to understand both sides of an argument WITHIN their society. They also taught their people how to stand up against foreign countries militarily and diplomatically not understand their point of view beyond understanding in order to forward their own country's interests. If you want an understanding of both sides, don't expect a politician to give you that or expect 50 percent and watch an interview with the other side to get the other 50.

Gorbachev never came out to say that there actually was such a promise. Yeltsin never claimed such a thing. Bush Sr., speaking for God knows who, made some vague statements to that effect in the late 1980s, but East European countries knew it would be foolish to listen to his pro Moscow advice as when he cautioned Ukrainians in 1991 not to "play" with nationalistic aspirations for independence and just continue to remain in the Soviet Union. It was the East European countries themselves that clamored to be taken into NATO realizing early on that Russia would never change and that their genuine independence would always be threatened by a manifold more powerful Russia. NATO of the 1990s and early 2000s anyway was reenvisioned as a European collective security block which even Russia would soon join. As Russia became more threatening to all its neighbors, interfering in the affairs of many of them to the point of turning Belarus into a puppet state, Europe realized it would have to give greater substance to NATO. Putin and everyone were well aware NATO would never invade or take aggressive action against Russia. It was just that the East European countries were coming together in resisting Russia that got him infuriated. Putin is like a princess that doesn't let anyone get by doing things different from how he wants them to be.

I share your objection to the Electoral College, and the country would indeed have been better off if Clinton had won instead of Trump. But that's a very low bar to clear. On her merits, Clinton was a wretched candidate. She's duplicitous, corrupt, self-serving, politically uncourageous, and an un-indicted felon. At this point, the country would be better off still if she'd just recede into quiet retirement.
