My late father watched wrestling from the early 1950's on " the 7th tv in Harrington:. Our town was under 1800 people so he knew everyone who had tv before him. In 1980 we got cable and watched together. We Loved watching Bobby Heenan saying " Uncle Elmer. The Buffet Buster" .Great Memories

Uncle Elmer wasn’t very bright. He didn’t realize that the WWF was the best-paying, most prestigious organization around for pro wrestlers. The fact that he wasn’t fired after his _first_ no-show, was merciful on Vince McMahon’s part. Uncle Elmer was just asking to get fired after his _second_ no-show.

@@Axs_Nice_Hair See, WWE fanboys don't know the history of WWF.. A lot of them think WWF was just this be all end all which isn't true at all.. AWA, NWA, Mid South were all important prestigious promotions during the 1970s, 1980s.. WWF was seen as the secondary promotion to go to, to get paid even though your character would take a different hit (Dusty Rhodes) than what your character was in other promotions.. in the 1990s WCW had WWF's number and they failed to dial it.. WCW in the 1990s made WWF look second rate until The Rock and Stone Cold came into play and changed that for WWF.. Plus WCW was starting to let their success take their foot off the gas..
@kenrickkahn
@kenrickkahn 28 күн бұрын
@@Axs_Nice_Hair A lot of people do that too when it comes to sport teams.. Some people are just comfortable in certain regions of the country.. If WCW was around I would choose WCW cause I am from the South and would feel more comfortable around other southern wrestlers and southern management.. If I had a choice to play for the Atlanta Falcons and New York Giants I will choose Atlanta each and every time cause it fits my personality better.. Nothing wrong with getting in where you would be more happier at..

I remember Hillbilly Jim from back in Memphis, too... he was "Harley Davidson." I think he teamed up with "Dirty Rhodes" -- a Dusty Rhodes imitator. I may be wrong about that part... but he was teamed with some other odd character. Anyway, "Harley" wasn't there long, but he made a good impression.

Lots of people commenting on Jim's eye twitches. They only or mainly occur when there is a pause in his speech as he is trying to gather his thoughts or choose his words. It looks like something he is mainly in control of, not a tic, that he does to maintain the momentum of his speech. Others might stammer or um and ah or y'know or repeat a habitual phrase with such a pause but Jim never does. He screws up his left eye and keeps the pause so brief it doesn't break the flow. It is like some guitarists pull strange concentration faces as they play, somehow scrunching the eye muscles seems to help concentration Jim speaks well, doesn't repeat himself, and is honest and direct, there's a few ex-wrestlers who can claim that but not that many

With all due respect to Hillbilly Jim, the Hillbilly schtick never really got over. He did, but not Cousin Luke and Elmer. All the evidence you need is a 1985 Saturday Night's Main Event where the Hillbilly Team had a six-man tag against Piper, Orton, and Jesse Ventura. People started booing the Hillbillies. This was lomg before kayfabe was routinely broken, so the announcers ignored the crowd, but the Piper team did win.

The commenters on this post don't understand the business side of wrestling. In those days, it was not uncommon for a headliner to hold a promoter up for more money. Promoters were notorious for shortpaying and firing wrestlers without hesitation. A gimmicky wrestler knew he could be dumped at any time, so occasionally if a gimmick wrestler made it to the top of the card, he would threaten to no show a big event to get an extra $20-100k. It actually made sense to do this if you were a one-off gimmick like Elmer because you would make more money in that one event than you would make the rest of the year. You also knew you could get fired at anytime once the gimmick wore off. That Elmer gimmick wasn't going to last too long plus Elmer was unreliable, so Elmer decided to cash out while he had the chance. It was actually a smart move by Elmer because he most likely was going to be fired soon anyway.

I love how wrestlers’ stories almost never match reality. And I say this as someone who like Hillbilly Jim - both the gimmick and the real man in real life. Listen to what he says about the Bundy-Elmer SNME match and then go watch it (it’s here on KZbin). He basically says that Vince had Bundy squash Elmer. Bundy did win, yes, but the match was anything but what Hillbilly Jim describes. It was a short match and Elmer controlled about 80% of it. Elmer missed a second splash, fell, Bundy dropped an elbow and won. Boring match. Short match. And one in which Bundy certainly did NOT dominate. The match doesn’t even vaguely resemble what is described here. And I’m certain, given the matchup, Elmer wasn’t ever slated to win. So, even Bundy’s win, after having been losing most of the match, wasn’t a change due to anger at Elmer. I’m sure Bundy was always slated to win. So, other than the quick ending, which made Elmer look bad (couldn’t kick out of a mild elbow drop?), there is zero evidence that Bundy was instructed to hammer on Elmer.

I also do the same stuff, you think it works so your ok with it but once you realize everyone notices it and they mock you for it it either crushes you or you deal with it. I hid in bathrooms for years hated being in the middle hated girls until I had a spurt in 8th grade to 170lbs and 6’2” and I realized everyone was smaller so hearing people up was a thing then and I grew 2 more inches a year later 😂.
