We adopted 5 precious siblings, quit our jobs, took the kids out of school, sold our pretty house, bought an old mink farm, started composting, built a garden, got some rabbits, chickens, sheep and pigs. We’re in year 3. Goal is to grow all our food and train others to do so. Grateful in Nova Scotia 🇨🇦

I love Joel Salatin ❤️ I’m so grateful for incredible people like him, with true morals, integrity and class...not to mention massive his knowledge. I’ve learned so much from him the past few years, and he and other homesteaders inspired and equipped me to start growing my own food in my suburban neighborhood. I’m actually adding raised beds to my front yard this weekend too. I pray that inspires neighbors to stop wasting effort growing useless grass, and start growing food. We’ve been greatly deceived to think a grass lawn is what’s “Normal” & acceptable. I’m also growing my own micro greens in my basement, started my seeds last weekend in my basement to get a head start on the summer growing season, and I’m doing my own sprouts. If I can do it, anyone can do it. Next year I may take the step to laying hens too. God put it on my heart to in 2019 to start growing my own food, but in 2020, I went into overdrive with it. I want out of the wicked system we are enslaved to.

There are 6 states making human compost legal, Washington 2020 Oregon 2021 Colorado 2021 California 2022 Vermont 2022 and New York 2022. They are forcing farmers to buy this compost to restore nitrogen. I am flabbergasted.

Joel’s words ring true to me. I’ve read several of his books and watched a bunch of his videos which have inspired me to start my own little market garden. After too many years sitting at a desk under artificial lights I’m now a beginning farmer starting in my 60’s. My friends think I’m crazy while they are retiring I’m starting a new occupation that is probably best for a much younger person but I pray for god to give me the strength to get the things started so I can leave behind a farm to a much younger person who is inspired by Joel’s words way before they are in their 60’s.

@@normanwells2755 in the 60s up until the 80s,we had farmers markets, people who grew gardens or small truck farmers could care there produce to a farmers markets and they would buy it, and then sell it to the local grocery stores and others. People that lived uptown could go buy affordable produce most anywhere. The farm bills,turned into Corp farms subsidiaries , instead of small farmers. Republicans and Demacrats are Guilty!

@@jamesbass7981 There are still farmers' markets. They charge an arm and a leg more than super markets. Have you checked out Joel Salatin's prices? Good for him if he can find enough rich fools to buy it. $19.50 for a pound of bacon, $12.25 per for eggs if you buy 4 dozen, $6.50 a pound for turkey straight across, $12.25 per gallon of milk...... probably an average 4 to 5 times supermarket prices. Is that affordable for the average family? His target market must be virtue signalling yuppies with money to burn who actually beieve it is value. Good for them. Good for him. What about the rest? The rest need high volume, safe, cheap food. Which is what the Green Revolution has provided since the early '60s and meant 8 billion people eat better than 3.5 billion did before that. If his low commercial input model worked to create prosperity Zimbabwe would be the richest country in the world. He thinks his products are better. But I have bees too and would never tell any one that honey is better than granulated sugar just becasue the ratio of glucose to sucrose is slightly different. My tomatoes are good but I've tasted good greenhouse ones too. My peas and carrots are real good but are they worth the processing costs to blanche and freeze them? Decisions in life are trade offs. And over all traditional ag is the best value for the most people. Salatin is a success. The market could probably handle a few more suppliers like him since apparently a new customer is borne every minute according to P T Barnum.

Joel is an amazing man! My husband and I had the opportunity to visit his farm, Polyface Farm, last summer! He has a farm which is very transparent and works like a well oiled machine. We have also for the past 7 years have been following Homesteaders of America. A conference every October is Virginia. We need to wake up and see our food is under attack and HOA teaches one how to be more self sufficient and self sustaining!

@@grizzlygrizzle Slowly but surely. NOT using chemicals and incorporating a bit of thought and some manual labor out-competes farms that use chemicals, not in quantity but using the systems of sustainable ag. costs less money once you get the soil up to quality.

ALL food producers should be open to the public at any time, unannounced, and transparent like Mr. Salatin does. If a food producer is hiding where our food comes from (such as sneaky labels with missing country-of-origin), why should we trust them?

He doesn't rely on ONLY his own knowledge. Now, the way they work their farm I believe is a method Joel helped to devise but I can't remember if he based it on books he had read. The thing that he says that to me has the most impact when you listen to entire conversations about raising animals and crops is, the soil is the product. I'm paraphrasing but that's the general point. He raises animals I believe more than crops, so for really good info in that regard there are better sources of info, but Joel is a master at creating beautiful pasture land that's very healthy and he rotates different animals over it in a scientific way to produce the best pasture via very healthy soil. This is somewhat similar to something Elon Musk has said but I wouldn't compare those two people because Joel is a genuine caring human being, and Elon is about becoming incredibly wealthy so he can build his rockets and space program to take billionaires to Mars once the earth is ruined. But his statement is basically, the factory is the product. In both cases, when you get the core of what you're doing to a best possible solution, the thing that comes out of that system is as good as possible.

I'm about 10 miles north of Hillsdale college. Trying to do exactly what he's saying. We run a small cabin rental/kayak/backpacking camp on the St Joseph river. Trying to do the Eco Farming while maintaining the natural surroundings. It's challenging, but we like doing it. And we got eggs.

This doesn't just apply to agriculture. Chatting with my local village shop keeper, he lamented the recent tripling of his electricity bill. I pointed out that the building used to be a mill, and that the stream was a ready source of green energy right on his doorstep. It would make all kinds of sense to generate electricity there for the shop and others, especially if it's three times as expensive now. He looked at me as if I was mad, and said "That's just not . . ." then he went silent. Months back I tried to have a conversation with him about his AC problem. He has so many refrigeration units running in such a small space that he has to keep the air conditioners running at full power for most of the year just to keep the air temperature down. I tried to explain how all that hot air could be used to move air around and cool his shop, but it all sounded too expensive and complicated to him. I haven't mentioned that the water running past in the stream is usually at the exact same temperature as he's trying to maintain in all those fridges. He could run most of his fridges by connecting them to a simple network of hoses. What would be the point? He'd never go for it, and I understand. Can you imagine all the objections, red tape and expense he'd be subjected to for trying to install a water wheel, a passive airflow system or a bank of water cooled fridges? I'm sure he could push ALL that through the local planning system . . . if he was extremely rich, but as a small business, there's no way he'd get these ideas past them, or his bank manager. It's only human nature to want to fit in. We don't like to stand out or be seen as different, and a shop with a water wheel, water cooled fridges and passive AC would certainly be a bold move, but given the tens of thousands a year they currently spend on electricity, he could significantly lower his prices and attract more business all at the same time. Instead, it's up for sale, running at a loss, with no interest, and we're all expecting our local shop and post office to close soon. How myopic.

Have been your biggest fan and follower since I worked in your neighborhood Joel and lived down the road in Shenandoah County. Your model and demographics are unique. You need to let beginners know that up front. I have lent your books out to people who have subsequently sold the farm as they could not meet your sales in Virginia. One fellow read a coupe of your books, followed them to a T and just sold his farm that has been in his family over 100 years. None your fault but we need to let the people know the risks up front. Thank you for your hard work and influence. PS - we don't have enough people to farm. Heads up as mechanization and mega farms will increase. I'm retired USDA and work with that sector still.

Make a small hot compost pile if you haven't and can. Grow whatever food you can, even if it's in containers on a patio. Check out farmers markets and CSAs. If you're not yet, get informed and active in local government. Advocate for rank choice voting and vote for progressive politicians.

Some 15 years ago I and my family vacation on Polyface Farm’s… to get an in person, understanding of joels attitude of regenerative farming. It was real, and it was beautiful…. First found out about Mr. Salatin when Ron Paul was running for President. My goal has been to move back to rural area and start up my Homestead. The housing fluctuation due to the pandemic and govt spending has me in limbo. Trying to find a country home that isn't overpriced by 100k right now is very hard to come by in my area and other states I used to consider moving to are much more expensive as well. F the govt and centrally planned economies. F THE Fed Reserve and the rigged economy.

My daughter and son in law are market vegetable and flower farmers, they grow organically but can’t claim it because of the fees, inspections and regulations are expensive, rental on a farmers market booth is expensive, land taxes are expensive and so on, unfortunately the government has made it difficult for the little guy to make it, big corporations get all kinds of cuts, can employ slave labor(illegal immigrants), ship their produce across country and it be cheaper than a local can produce…. It’s infuriating! We have a lot of things we need to change and getting rid of government overreach is a big one so we can get back to the way it should be ! Blessings

Don't ever sell American land to aliens (non-citizens). It is not reciprocal. An American expat is prohibited by national law from buying even a small home in all of Asia. Everything must be reciprocal. Instead, millions of foreigners bought up houses in California. No country in the world allows this.

I have literally never grown grass in my yard. Owned a house in 4 states. Grass is such a waste of time, water, and resources. Does nothing for my ego. I always, always grow some food in my yard.

The left has a much easier [for them] goal to obtain. Since as far back as the late 60's I remember the left calling for massive depopulation claiming the earth can only sustain 350 to 500 million people world wide. Seems that remains the target of the WEF and they are willing to use ANY method to achieve that ridiculously low population number, be it abortions, war, restrictions on farming, restricting energy, etc. Seems the people of Sri Lanka were the first to rebel after WEF policies were starving them of both food and energy.

Good stuff! Industrial agriculture has been giving farming a bad name for years. Bigger isn’t necessarily always better! Although, my grandsons think those big tractors and trucks are cool. We should be able to feed ourselves and everyone in this country without having to import food from anywhere else in the world. Unfortunately so many people are looking for the easy way to get by. All you really need to do is follow the money. We’re so distracted by which world leader is trying to take over a neighbor for whatever resources they can get their hands on. I’m in that 60 year old group! My kids have grown up and moved on. My bride and I are getting too old to keep shoveling manure and pulling weeds! Over the years, I’ve milked cows, raised pigs, chickens ( butchered hundreds!) finished out cattle and raised gardens every year! I remember filling the hay mow so full I had to reach down to get bales of hay off the conveyor and throw them up over my head to make room for more! Don’t mention changing the silo unloader chute down a door or two! Fished and hunted too! We’ve busted our humps to get here and when we turn around, it’s not that manure fork that they have their hand out for! All we can do is keep chugging along. But it does make me wonder what the future will be when we are gone. By the way, this farm has been in our family since Lincoln was president! And I ain’t going anywhere until they wheel me out like they did for grandpa!

Also the grains they feed them are gmo. I'm selling my house and relocating. I want to start a garden. I eat 95% all organic non gmo. It's a little more money, but I am healthy for my age.

I've been saying very similar things for years. I'm continually amazed how little value people put on food. It's only a necessity instead of a simple want... To that end, we've started a small two acre farm with 70 fruit trees,sheep, ku e kune pigs, chicken's, ducks and rabbits.
