This talk in my opinion, is one of the most clear and helpful teachings. I was thinking that keeping a peripheral awareness of the breath involved a sort of recollection of what the breath “represents”. To me, it represented, in general, the fragility of the body, impermanence, and a lack of control over the body. But I see that I was just trying to assert control and put my spin on things. It is very helpful to know that I should simply understand the breath to be an impersonal anchor that is beneath the body and my experience. It is a sort of tool that can keep us from getting too carried off while enduring feelings. The points made about the elements too are just (no words)…like a light turning on. There’s so much work to do. Thank you Bhantes!

You should do both. Understand it as an impersonal anchor, but when that understanding loses clarity you should make the effort and ponder on the breath as a sign of the fragility of the body and impermanence. That's the role of correct Vipassana practice. Reestablish the clarity of an impersonal point of view and then allowing it to endure as such (samatha).

Thank you for this talk. There were doubts of whether me directing attention towards the breath during periods of ill will, anger and so on was the wrong practice, even though I noticed the feelings and thoughts quickly dissipate. Now I know I was headed in the right direction and will continue to increase sense restraint over time.

Excellent explanations, easy to understand. Please continue in low levels for better understanding. Bit more to add, if one need. When I feel natural discomfort, it is again a moment of passing away of a moment of a life span, between birth and death. Birth and death is not within my control. Moment of body feeling arises and ceases, as far as body temperature (energy) retain. Body Temperature retain, as far as life span retains. This process is keep going until the end of life span. Either I can think, it is me and mine or think using this right view. Developing right view is the key by Sathipattana, if developed, then there is no me or mine for suffering. Dear sir, thank you for the knowledge. I know I value sensuality. I have been asking question But I can’t figure out why I value it. Could you give me some hints so that I could get to the root and uproot by craving for sensuality? Thank you.

The sutta in question: SN 54.6 -Arittha Sutta "At Savatthi. There the Blessed One said, "Monks, do you develop mindfulness of in-&-out breathing?" When this was said, Ven. Arittha replied to the Blessed One, "I develop mindfulness of in-&-out breathing, lord." "But how do you develop mindfulness of in-&-out breathing, Arittha?" "Having abandoned sensual desire for past sensual pleasures, lord, having done away with sensual desire for future sensual pleasures, and having thoroughly subdued perceptions of irritation with regard to internal & external events, I breathe in mindfully and breathe out mindfully." "There is that mindfulness of in-&-out breathing, Arittha. I don't say that there isn't. But as to how mindfulness of in-&-out breathing is brought in detail to its culmination, listen and pay close attention. I will speak." "As you say, lord," Ven. Arittha responded to the Blessed One. The Blessed One said, "And how, Arittha, is mindfulness of in-&-out breathing brought in detail to its culmination? There is the case where a monk, having gone to the wilderness, to the shade of a tree, or to an empty building, sits down folding his legs crosswise, holding his body erect, and setting mindfulness to the fore.Always mindful, he breathes in; mindful he breathes out..." www.accesstoinsight.org/tipitaka/sn/sn54/sn54.006.than.html
