I was a young English boy when I read in Life the piece on Mrs Merriweather Post and Hillwood. I wanted to visit and a few years ago my wife and I were lucky enough to take lunch there and see the wonders of her collection ( and so many bequests and loans to The Met in new York). I recall the amazing set of events - her deep knowledge of Russia, her connections with the Russians selling - for a rouble a ton weight boxed (!) - the treasures of the overthrown society there, and of course the happy circumstance of both her immense wealth - the ability to purchase - and her fine taste and educated awareness of the relevance of the pieces purchased and displayed. Hillwood seems to be really quite modest from outside; not overly grand, in a manner fitting to a republic, and yet, within, a wonderland of the skill of genius and accomplishment. A visit I will not forget, and hope to repeat one day.
