im not knocking it but im just curious as to why his overdubbed voiceover has a spontainious delivery and it sounds like he is speaking in an almost hushed way like a golf commentator almostp trying not to disterb the players. His other documentories have a scripted voiceover. why the change?
@chirstophersjohnson4 жыл бұрын
Good point. My guess is that these DVD "extras" were very quickly put together since they are not the primary show, and so the voice over was probably done in a less formal setting after the main show was already complete. Almost like a "director's commentary track".

Wine and cheap women-- is that this British traveler's idea of a wet place? What did he mean when he said Gujarat is a "dry place" just beacuse they don't sell alchohol there? Travelers like him want to cheapen the status of women in relation to men. His encounters with two Indian women prove that. One on her way to work talking about Indian women's duties to men, and another in showbiz working under a film director who belives in more and more sexual exposure of women in films!

"Dry" is a legal term in the west, for an area where alcohol is forbidden to sell.

"Dry place" is a term for locations that do not sell alcohol. That's it, nothing more.

Why is it that this British traveller wants to know about Pakistan only from men? He did the same thing in Mumbai as well. Why did he choose not to meet any highly-educated woman either in India or in Pakistan? Why show women in veils on the streets? Is that all Pakistan is about? It's strange the way this traveller apparently befriended some men to focus more on the decadent sides of these societies rather than focusing on their strong sides.
@chirstophersjohnson4 жыл бұрын
Yes the women were more hidden here. In episode 6 he goes to Bangladesh and speaks to women running a micro-loan program to farmers. It's good. And near Tibet/China area he speaks with women about a local culture with sexual liberation for women. Practically matriarchal.

Michael Palin's presentation of the women and girls in extended Kalash village is discriminatory. Why that sad music in the background while filming those women and children? Why did he comment, "naughty, naughty, naughty skirt...."? That's a clear attempt to associate women's feminintiy with naughtiness. It's disrespectful towards women. And it's insensitive of him that he could only see their poverty and dresses, not them as beautiful human beings. Male-chauvinistic British-race arrogance..
@vMaxHeadroom7 жыл бұрын
My god, for you to see his comment when she was hitting the skirt as a disrespectful attack on the women is quite unbelievable..maybe you need to look at yourself and ask why you had those thoughts...Ahh, I get it, its the British you hate, not the horrible way some women are treated by Men (especially in villages) in Pakistan (I could say the same about Bangladesh as it is no different) where they are completely stripped of all dignity and treated as slaves, married of to there uncles at unbelievably young ages...with poverty so harsh in a male dominated and run society who have done nothing to bring equality to the Women of both Pakistan or Bangladesh...Look to your own country and countrymen before blaming others. The days of the British ended a long, long time ago, but in parts of Pakistan and Bangladesh its as though you are still in the dark ages...

@chirstophersjohnson4 жыл бұрын
I also believe you misinterpreted the scene. It may have been lost because of the English style of humor. The woman is "beating" the skirt to wash it. This is uncommon in the west and so comically, it looks like she is punishing the skirt. It's a very simple joke. Also, to the western viewer, it is very clear that Palin is showing us women in a second class position in order to comment about it. He doesn't have underline it with his words. He knows that a western audience will find the situation unjust. That is precisely why he shows it.
