I have knocking coming up through the foot pegs of my 2021 Royal Enfield Himalayan. Is this a problem, is this an issue? How can I fix it. In this video I take you through a Top 10 check, a ten step by step process, to find out what the sound is on my motorcycle and resolve the problem using a real example of something that is wrong with my Himalayan. I repair and check the engine idle, drivetrain, sprockets, chain tension, axle, wheel alignment and more whilst also cleaning and lubricating the chain using Ipone on my Himalayan. These are the simple steps to take.

I've got the same tires on my Himalayan; was done with the factory rubber at 4100 miles. I'm pleased with them enough that I have another set in the shop ready to install when these Mitas wear out.

Here's a very old tip for finding out where a particular noise is coming from on an engine that is running. It's not easy just being next to a running engine to identify the specific location of a particular noise. Go get the longest screwdriver you can find. Ideally, one that is at least 30cm long but in a pinch anything will do - even the one in the toolkit that came with the bike. Put the tip of the screwdriver on the part of the engine you want to listen to and shove the blunt end in your ear. You made sure the handle was clean first, right? Oh well, a little grease in the lughole never harmed anyone... By using this technique you can listen to specific bearings and parts of the engine BEFORE you start dismantling it. It's a good idea to practice this technique on an engine you know is in good condition so you can get used to what "normal" sounds like for your engine.

@@WeeJaunt Many years ago I worked for Sykes-Pickavant. Every summer we'd get a handful of university students on work experience for a few weeks. As part of their induction they got a guided tour of The Showroom. This looked like a mock-up of a retail outlet and contained examples of everything SP made. There were literally hundreds of different tools in there. After a few minutes of gawping at the array of glittering tools, the students would start asking questions... "What are these odd shaped lumps of metal for?" "Those are dollies and spoons for panel beating." "What's your best selling tool, mister?" "13mm combination spanner. Any Ford mechanic will tell you why." "What's your best seller that isn't a spanner?" "1500 Series hydraulic puller kit." Sometimes one of the students would point at the display of diagnostic tools and ask "What's the best diagnostic tool that can be used on *any* engine?" I'd look at my friend Tony and raise an eyebrow. Tony was head of Quality Control and had the "joy" of babysitting this lot while they were with us. He'd stroke his chin, nod sagely, and say "Go on, Henry, I think they can handle the truth." I'd turn back to the students saying "A screwdriver. Preferably a long one. You shove it in your ear." Then to cries of "Yeah, riiight!" and "Pull the other one" we'd take them through to R&D, fire up an engine on a test stand, and demonstrate the technique. It was worth it to see the looks of amazement on their faces when they tried it for themselves. Definitely a "lightbulb moment" for some of them ;-)

What I love most about my 2021 Himmy is in its ability to break down continually. It seems to be built into the design. Kind of reminds me of my old MG midget. A fun ride that requires heavy electrical and mechanics skills. Having had a Goldwing for years, I got out of the habit of mechanical repairs and spent all my time riding. What a bore! Now I get to spend 3 hours of research and repairs for every hour of riding. It stalls 3 or four times per ride and has done so since buying it new in 2021. The stalls caused 4 nasty drops, but I learned to ride the clutch just in case. The speedometer rattled apart by 1,300km, the rear suspension froze up at 1,500km, the steering head bearings were shot from street riding by 9,000km, Most of the plastic parts like front directionals, headlamp and speedometer are now held together with black polymer rubber glue. Now at 13,000km the engine is starting to knock and the shifting is getting very hard. I am thinking of buying a V-Strom and giving up repairs so as to ride again. Anyone in the market for a low street milage Himmy? Ill even throw in a free tube of glue.

@@moorshound3243 Yea I guess I should have bought a Harley. Of course they are about the same as far as reliability goes. For me it wasn't about the price, I wanted a bike that was fuel efficient and able to handle the back roads of the Andes while carrying heavy loads and two people. The V-Strom 250SX was a consideration but I need the off road low torque that the 411 long stroke gives me. Besides, I have had other inexpensive Indian made bikes and they are very popular because they are extremely reliable. I really don't understand why Royal Enfield has so many problems with reliability.

Have a look at your video, where you first show the front sprocket. As you turn the chain over it you can see a tight link. Once you've cleaned and lubed the chain it may have sorted it but please make sure.

When checking chain tension, first find the tightest point, as chains don't wear evenly. After adjustment, your chain looks to be very, very tight. Get someone heavy to sit on the bike (off the stand) and I think you'll find you have no slack at all, as the chain tightens as the suspension compresses. No slack = rapid chain, sprockets and gearbox bearing wear. Been there, done it and learned the hard way! Ideally you should have a tiny bit of slack, when the suspesion is compressed until the final drive shaft, swingarm pivot and rear axle are all in line.
@WeeJaunt
@WeeJaunt 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Derek you are absolutely right. I regaled after a day orr two of riding that I'd overtighten the chain so added more slack a couple of days later. I am going to add text to the video to explain that it's over tight 👍 thanks for your input I'm sure people will appreciate your message here..and thanks for watching.

@@WeeJaunt Hi WJ. I don't mind giving advice on a forum, but I feel a bit like I'm trespassing to do it on someone's channel. There have been many complaints on the Himmi FB page of crap Indian chains, crap sprockets and people changing out for hyper expensive replacements, IMO because they followed the book and set the tension too tight. If you have a ratchet strap, after finding the tight spot, pull up the suspension with the strap until the three shafts are in line. Set a bit of slack and then relaease the strap. You'll find that on the centre stand, you now have 35mm or so of slack, which IMO is the correct setting. I've only 4000 miles on my bike, but there's no sign whatsoever of chain wear, yet others are spending £££££s on replacements long before. Last hint, get a Loobman chain oiler! ATB.

@@derekm6236 you will never be trespassing here pal all advice is well received. That's the whole point of this video eh. Human error.. I make mistakes. And its better if there's something up that people get good advice. Aye that's the reason I don't really follow the forums any more lol
@daveherbert3475
@daveherbert3475 2 жыл бұрын
That chain is far too tight, The measurement (25 to 30mm) is not from the swingarm. Its the amount of vertical slack you have in the chain (lowest point to highest point). Don't forget when the suspension is loaded the chain gets tighter.

I'm glad I found your video. Do you have any idea how useless "Himalayan rear wheel clunk" is as a search term?! Mine has been making an intermittent clunk that I feel in my left foot peg. It happens while I coast with the engine off, so I'm pretty sure it's not internal to the engine. I'll be checking chain tension and rear bearings next.

At 5:45 your onscreen notes indicated to adjust chain with both tires on the ground. 1) The manual says ON the center stand. 2) How do you hold the bike straight up and down. Do you have a helper. I left your video at this point.

Why would you pull out a tape measure and not just use the the little indicators that are on the wheel tensioners? Those are specifically for aligning your tire and creating chain tension.
@WeeJaunt
@WeeJaunt Жыл бұрын
Over time the indicators get scratched up and gummed up with grease and crud. Besides as a carpenter might say "If you want to cut once be sure to measure twice" It takes 20 seconds to double check. Thanks for watching

I wont use ipone chain water ever again. Absolutely useless. Its ok to stop the surface rust but as a lube...nahh Try CRC Tac-2 apply to inside of the chain, not the outside, you're achieving nothing as the outside of the chains not riding on anything. At 5,000 kms and gave only adjusted the chain once. 50 mm max, I set mine to about 15 mm with a big ratchet strap tying the rear axle, swing arm and front sprocket centres in line. Measure it at TOP OF RUN not on the bottom where you measured it Final check, measure centre of swingarm bolt to axle centre for wheel alignment, my himmi is out by 1/2 a mark when aligned properly
