I just wanted to point out that, the first time Hinata and Hoshiumi meet, Hoshiumi starts competing against Hinata about anything BUT their height. He feels “threatened” hearing that Hinata is a middle blocker, he’s happy when he realizes that his vertical jump is higher, but he says nothing about Hinata’s height when it’s revealed to him. He’s clearly taller, but he does not view that as a “victory”, since height is out of their control, unlike the height of their jumps. He wants to compete against Hinata about something they can control and work upon. I love Hoshiumi as a character, and especially his “rivalry - companionship” with Hinata!

Hoshiumi is the kind of player Ushijima thought Hinata would be when he suprised him with that jump, so him making that "rude" comment at their match makes more sense when you realize he has faced players like this (or even hoshiumi himself) at nationals before

12:02 yeah, that's how Bokuto is supposed to look. Back in the day when Bokuto was introduced in the anime in Season 2 a some people didn't like how ''skinny'' he looked in the anime, he was more muscular in the manga even back then. Now that Season 4 changed the art style to match the manga art style (which evolved since then) they properly gave Bokuto his THICCness back lol. 20:07 ''Kamome'' in Kamomedai translates to ''seagull'', that's the reason for Hoshiumi's weird eyes.

I will never get over Akaashi's PhD in Bokuto Studies. The fact that he has all of this man's flaws numbered and categorized: what a brain. Not sure why the change in animation this season gave Washio (Fukurodani's #2, at 8:58 ) such an extreme glow up, but I'm happy for him. There is something so sweet about the Hinata-Bokuto relationship, they're so sincere and wholesome about it. I somehow find it really funny to see Kageyama and Hoshiumi talking to each other like normal teenagers; last time they met Hoshiumi was snarling at him like a little gremlin. But on a serious note: it's getting a little suspicious how first mini-Bokuto and then mini-Hinata had tragic accidents around you.

20:01 hinata’s showing respect by bowing. it’s a deep bow too, which is an even bigger deal. but that wasn’t the reaction hoshiumi was expecting. i think that’s why he says later that he wants people to be more freaked out. he was expecting hinata to be rattled or intimidated.

This is mostly corrected in the later seasons." from the haikyuu wiki's page for bokuto. this passage always makes me laugh because it sounds like the writer is really passionate about bokuto's muscles and is so bitter seasons 1-3 doesn't capture them 😭

8:43 Takeda and Ukai talk in the tokyo training arc where they point out the difference between Fukurodani and Karasuno, while Karasuno seems like a more team like group because they are always nice to each other, polite and rearly get into fights, the one that actually has more team chemestry at the time was Fukurodani because they allowed "fights", arguements, to happend in order to improve. 9:27 Konoha, Jack of all trades master of none, one of the many players that didn't get as much acknowlegment in the anime as in the manga. He has one of my favourite lines at the end, it always makes me cry 10:38 showing his back, because it has to be an inspiration for your team! 11:55 as another comment said, that's how he was supposed to always look, and here is where an animator, who is also a volleyball coach that reacted to the anime, said that they were very realistic in the calfs, among other areas, to those that jump more, like Bokuto (who also from the start wears longer kneepads since he uses his legs so much, I believe he is the only one that uses that kind) 15:37 funny how the first name you read aloud is the one that's important 20:04 it is a cultural thing, and they have shown all characters bowing to another, like after a game, win or lose, they bow to the crowd thanking them for their support, or thay bow to an uperclassment, senior, coach or teacher, out of respect, it's done a loooot. Here I believe he was acknowliging how good hoshiumi is and bowing in respect to his talent

Hoshiumi has the same voice actor as the main character Tanjiro in Demon Slayer. If they get a big name like that you know he's going to be a major character. Same goes for the voice actor for Miya Atsumu.

Hinata just saw what ppl like himself can actually achieve..that there is no limit, he just has learn to do E V E R Y T H I N G. And for him, who has always admired and envied height and thought it was soooo important, Hoshiumi just proved that despite being short he can really carry the team. Now,..... let's give it to the real hero of the episode...Akaashi, Bokuto's setter!!!!! The guy has MAD MAAAD BRAINS! Decision making in split second, always aware of his surroundings lol he spotted Hinata mid-game, the desperation!

so the eyeliner thing on Hoshiumi's eye are inspired from seagulls, which is Komomedai's animal "mascot". His appearance is based on the seagulls with white hair and that eye. The same can be said about Nishinoya with his eyes being based on the Karasuno's crows

I definitely feel like this was “priority” episode in terms of animation, everything looked so good!! Bokuto is such a fun character, you can’t help but love the energy he brings to the show and on the court! It’s nice how Fukurodani, and especially Akaashi, are able to understand that although Bokuto’s behavior can definitely come across as rather ridiculous, clearly this stuff does matter to him for whatever reason and they respect that, to an extent lol. And Hoshiumi is another a high energy guy! The way he mentions the ‘world’ stage I think really shows how high his goals are - the buildup of his and Hinata’s dynamic here showing that they both basically have the same kind of hunger in them, due to what they’re similarly disadvantaged by, is very neat

I feel like you’re coming around to Kurokawa a bit more.. 👀 He’s nicer than his eyebags make him look! Anyway this is definitely one of my favorite episodes!! Not sure if you missed the small dialogue from 8:32 to 8:37 when everyone was poking at Bokuto (as they should lol) but I really love how they note that while Bokuto does get all temperamental, on the other hand he won’t ever bend to nerves or pressure! I think they were saying Bokuto ‘is being serious right now’ in the sense that he’s not at all faking or playing it up, his mood can genuinely drop at any point haha. Also Hinata going to get his own Bokuto-style shirt as soon as he had some time is adorable, I really love how the whole situation connects the flashback from the Land VS Air ova into this episode 😭 It’s like both Hinata and Bokuto keep inadvertently boosting each other up! And it’s great how you’re appreciating Hoshiumi even more now too, his and Hinata’s rivalry is already popping off

It's so Unfair!! 5:16 This!! THIS!! This is the animation we could've gotten if it weren't for Covid😭😭 I'm still so freaking salty since a lot of people hated on the art style and animation but it wasn't their fault they had to cut corners😭😭 If I remember correctly this was the episode that aired the week the lockdowns started thats why animation was so good..The next few episodes after this will start to look janky at some parts because it was the height of covid if it weren't for this shows amazing story this season could've easily been dropped by the casual viewers

22:40 52 teams make it to the Spring Nationals: 47 prefectural winners + 4 additional teams from the biggest prefectures (Hokkaido, Kanagawa, Osaka/Aichi*, Tokyo) - Fukurodani from Tokyo 1 additional team from hosting venue (Tokyo) - Nekoma * Aichi gets the team in Haikyuu!! but in real life it's Osaka that gets the additional team Since there are 52 teams, some teams have to get a bye in the 64-team bracket. 4 best teams from Summer Interhigh Tournament are seeded and get a bye. Itachiyama (Sakusa's team) beat Inarizaki (Atsumu's team) in the Summer Interhigh, so they're seeded #1 and #2 and play on opposite brackets. Usually, if Tokyo team is not among the 4 seeded teams, then it would get #5 seed and also get a bye in the first round, but Itachiyama is #1 seeded this year, so 8 additional teams get a bye back the luck of draw. Also, the 40 teams that disappear consist of 20 boys teams and 20 girls teams.

Haha apparently with Bokuto, they changed his design slightly in this season and made him a bit more buff because fans complained about it i guess. He is actually buff in the manga. Also Hoshiumi has the same JP va as Tanjiro from Demon slayer. He is an absolute beast when it comes to technique in volleyball despite his height.

Bento is literally "lunch box". Notice that coach Ukai is chatting up other coaches - building up those connections. The T-Shirt Hoshiumi got is basically reverse of "What is difficult in training will become easy in battle" - IE If you goof off when practicing, you will get stomped. Just doesnt translate well. So the important thing on the list of matches is Kamomedai since thats where Hoshiumi is. They are letting us know who they stomped in first round. To be fair Hoshiumi is a second year so it makes sense why he is so much better than Hinata Yes Kamomedai symbolic animal is the seagull. Notice the similarity in behaviour of a seagull to a crow :P This is also why Hoshiumi has such odd eyes - he has seagull eyes. So... since there are 52 teams playing at Spring tournament, it is impossible to do single elim without seeds. That means there are 12 seeded schools. First 4 are for the the teams who where top 4 at this years interhigh (if they didnt make it, the remaining slots go to the next highest placements from previous year's Spring tournament and further back). The fifth seed goes to the first slot from Tokyo (skip this step if they are seeded via the previous rule). The rest is lottery. I tried to do some research on who is exactly seeded but I know only few for sure: Itachiyama - they would be seeded anyway but we know they won Interhigh. The second surefire team I wont spoil. Third is a team of the last of the top 3 aces though its not important for anything. Rest is unclear/unknown. For Girls we just know that these ones are seeded (since they won) Naming window: Hoshiumi Korai his actual name is not too crazy. Korai means "Incoming Light" - referencing his rising star status. While Hoshiumi means Star Ocean probably referencing his boundless talent. What is interesting about his name is that the Kanji (one of japanese alphabet systems) of his name is the reverse of "Kaisei" which is a high school - its not exactly known for its volleyball but it might ring a bell since certain "somewhat known" volleyball player attended it. (Alright I am done with the teasing) The player is Yuji Nishida - I actually think Hoshiumi is somewhat modelled after him considering his super spikes, great serve and insane jump height of 351cm. Its time for the blast off and I cant wait for next week!
