I am also a Christian from Mindanao, and while we cannot deny those terrorism attacks, we cannot generalize them to the whole Muslim population here as we often mingle with them. In fact, personally I have my muslim friends, and they are fine to be with. Those "terrorists" are just a group of radicals who do not conform to the majority of muslims' mindset.

the context is based on Bahasa Melayu and Indonesia..i cud not find any derived words, or usage of the word... For example in cebuano, 1) USÁ is the correct cebuano term for number 1. and not ISA... bcuz there are no cebuano words that comes from ISA.. We have NAGKAHIUSA.. HINIUSA.. . For the SALAMAT there are no other words related to it.. Maybe, IT is borrowed word.. it is similar to SELAMAT, but it's usage is different.. Just like we borrowed the TOMA/TOMAR from spanish to mean 'TO DRINK'... but in spanish you can say TOMAR UN BUS (do you have to drink a bus?)..

Malay/Indonesian _selamat_ and Tagalog _salamat_ via Malay both derive from Arabic سلامة "salāmah" Cebuano _usa_ like the Tagalog _isa both derive from PAN (proto-austronesian) *isa, *esa, or *əsa, therefore both are cognates. Through vowel changes which is reflected as /u/ Cebuano and /i/ in Tagalog. Hence _bituin/bituon_ , _kain/kaon_ , _isa/usa_ .

I think the literal equivalent of saying thanks in the Tagalog language after you receive a favor or gift is "Pagpalain ka nawa (ng Poong may-kapal)". Similar to Europeans saying grace or gracias. But of course SLM (salamat) is also as meaningful to say because you're wishing peace to the one giving you the favor and peace is as important as pagpapala (grace or blessing). In Ilocano (another Philippine language north of the Philippines), saying thank you is "agyamanak" which means "I am blessed", expressing your acknowledgement of the gift or favor that you received. I also think that this "agyamanak" is the more appropriate phrase if your expressing your gratitude to God. (yes it's a phrase; agyamanak is actually concatenated two words: agyaman+ak).

This made me realized how I need to know more about my first language which is Tagalog and my parents' language Waray. I'm very interested about world's languages and I admit how I struggling with my knowledge in English because of the fear that there would be someone correct my grammar but I need to practice it for my dream job. Enjoyed the etymology section. 👍 Because of Filipinos' casual regard for appropriate language use, one has to be wary of new turns of speech that can develop into a trend that mis or undereducates (filipinisms as an example) And so one time a foreign acquaintance asked if it was correct to use 'salamat' everytime one says goodbye because he said it had been thrown at him a number of times, i reiterated that it means 'thanks' and not 'bye', presupposing that the folks he met may have simply adopted another trendy speech habit. But if the etymology shows it is 'peace' or 'be blessed' and the like, then now i can say sure, one can choose to use it when taking leave. When i use it for leavetaking, it's always prompted by something to thank for. But now that i think about it some more, there have been instances where i used it unconsciously simply because. 😊 A powerful word, huh.

Before Islam came Southeast Asian kingdoms or nations would either follow Hinduism, Buddhism, folk religions or combination of all (Angkor, Champa, Majapahit, Sri Vijaya, Butuan). This is why we also have Sanskrit words on our vocabulary like 'Karma', 'Dukkha, 'mukha', mata etc. I hope you'll also tackle this part as most of the ancient Indian and Hindu-Buddhist influences was replaced with Islam when it came, though the mainland Southeast Asians and Bali were able to preserve them. Actually there is a so called "proto-philippine" addressed and reconstructed by linguist, altho Badjaus are excluded to that. It is also the oldest Austranesian langauge after Formosan. Altho in this example "salamat" is a loan word as he mentioned so some or most states only had them not part of proto-philippine language.

Wow, so Salamat is like the Korean Annyeonghaseyo, for hello. But in reality it’s a combination of annyeong and hada. Annyeong means peace and hada or haseyo is to be/to do. So it’s literal meaning is to be in peace. Annyeonghaseyo! Hello! I hope you are in peace. Something like that. And they also say Annyeonghaseyo when leaving. So it’s also like saying goodbye, take care, be safe! Be in peace.

Actually its not annyeonghaseyo, it's "annyeonghigyeseyo" when you are leaving and "annyeonghigaseyo" for when you are saying goodbye to a person and you are staying, but when typically native koreans dont really pronounce it word by word, so it doesnt really matter, so pretty much you will hear annyeonghaseyo

This is wonderful, but you forgot a step! South Asian languages borrowed Salamat from Persian, which in turn got it from Arabic. You can tell because of the final “t” in Arabic, it’s pronounced like “salaamah,” but it’s “salaamat” when you connect it to another word. These Arabic feminine nouns all have a final “t” sound in Persian. Basically, after Sassanid Persia was conquered by the Rashidun Caliphate, the Arabic language was used as the official language in modern Iran/Persia. After the Ummayyad and Abassid caliphates, independent Iranian empires emerged and started using Arabic loanwords (kind of like Tagalog with Spanish and English). These Iranian empires started enslaving and conquering areas with lots of Turkic tribes, namely Karluk Turks (i.e., the ancestors of modern Uzbeks), who then began rising in the ranks of Iranian kingdoms and began expanding empires into South Asia, beginning with the Ghaznavid empire, the Delhi sultanates and then the Mughals. These Turkic kingdoms basically used Persian as their official language in South Asia, and as a result, we took in a massive amount of Persian and Arabic loanwords via Persian into Hindi/Urdu. During the early second millennium CE, these empires expanded to Bengal and began taking over the trade with modern Indonesia, where the words began influencing Malay. The word “salamat” in modern Persian actually means “health.” So basically, the history of the word “salamat” would be: Semitic root (s-l-m) -> salaamah (feminine noun in Arabic) -> Persian (salamat) -> Indo-Aryan languages (salamat) -> Bahasa Melayu/Indonesia (salamat) -> Tagalog (salamat) I’m an anthropologist/archaeologist of South Asia that speaks Hindi, Urdu, Arabic, Persian, and I’m currently learning Bahasa Indonesia and Tagalog for fun.

Probably the equivalents of "What are you doing?" or "Where are you going?" This is common throughout insular SE Asia - it's just that we just assume that equivalents to "How are you (doing)?" are somewhat fundamental/necessary cross-linguistically. However, if we really think about it, "what are you doing?" and "where are you going?" are probably the long-established (even "ancestral", if you want to put it that way) ways to greet someone, especially informally.
