This is an excellent piece of background info about the origin of this tradition. When you mentioned victory of light over darkness, it reminds me of India's Diwali festival: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diwali. I have a feeling that our Christian tradition has strong roots on this Indian tradition because after all, our precolonial identity is shaped by Hindu-Buddhist culture that we carried over to our present beliefs today. I think it is time to dig in to our Hindu-Buddhist past and rekindle our ancient cultural connections with India and SE Asia.

Studying high school in the Philippines, I've always loved history. Hated the memorization part but always loved the "lessons" I learned. I was more curious to know the why's and the how's instead of the what's and the when's although I know that they are part and parcel of each event to establish facts rather than myths or fictions. I remember many years ago how I would spend so much time hanging out all day (and night) with my childhood friend who (loves history and) tells me stories about World War I and II. It was fascinating and fun. Sad that even though I have been living more than half of my life abroad and now based in Canada, I still long to discover and rediscover the richness of our culture and history. I hope I can meet and hang out with you someday when I take my vacation so that I can hear and learn more from an expert in this field.

Hello po sir kirby, now ko lang po na discover yung channel nio and I was stunned to a mga new learnings an nalaman ko about my own country these kinds of information ay hindi naituturo sa schools kaya I realized that I have so much to learn If ok lang po hehehe just want these topics po sa next vids nio po + Ganap in the middle of 333 years As I surf trough the history of the Philippines I've noticed po na and laman lamang po madalas sa part na nasakop po tayo ng mga espanyol ay ung history noong pagdating nila (panahon ni lapu-lapu) at ang wakas (panahon ng ating pambansang bayani). I have a lot of questions pa po and i hope po na I can find the answers with you po SALAMATS

Hi Prof. Thanks for sharing your expertise about Philippines' linguistic-cultural anthropology. This is a big contribution for this generation to understand our practices and traditions. It is sad that we are losing our identity at a fast pace because of technology, globalisation, and social media. What is worse is how they label certain values and practices as Filipino toxic culture without understanding first what they mean. May I suggest you to discuss the so-called Filipino toxic practices such as respect to the elderly, resilience, family ties, interdependence, face, humility and how they are not toxic but beautiful values and practices and that the minds of these people have just been fooled by western imperialism. Thanks Prof. From a fellow college teacher

i think it dates before 1908. If the Spanish came in the 1500s its likely not to have been there only at 1900 in Pampanga. I think it was everywhere that there was a church and the star spread everywhere in the PH. Hence, the Parol popularity.

Farol is from Latin pharus. The word Pharus is from the Greek word Pharos, Pharos came from the name of the island near the port of Alexandria, where the most famous lighthouse in antiquity was constructed during the reign of Ptolomy I, who was a general under Alexander the Great

@mayac.13454 жыл бұрын
@@matalino3614 what I'm saying is the history he mentioned is rather local and kind of trivial. If He will go deeper into why lanterns were being lit up for the dead, that would be more interesting. How is it related to the other lanterns in Southeast Asia. If it's really for the dead, does it have anything to do with Philippines' austronesian roots? If so, is it related to any ritual being done in Taiwan, esp their aborigines. Plus if the lighting of lanterns was a Filipino thing, can he cite me other ethnic tr8bes in the Philippines that practice it? What are the tribal differences of the Ivatans, the Ifugaos, the Warays, etc etc etc? After all the tribes of the Philippines have its distinct pagan/animistic practices of the past, how were they manifested in the past per province/tribe? Plus the lace thing??? If not for the fact the Spain colonized the Philippines, the Philippines wouldn't have been introduced to lace design.
