Hello. I am a singer and I have learned both Carnatic classical vocal and Hindustani classical vocal. Here are some similarities and differences between both systems. Similarities : Both systems come from the samaveda Both systems encourage improvisation Both systems have a Tala structure and a raga structure Differences: Hindustani music is more prevalent in North India and it stretches out to Pakistan and Bangladesh. Hindustani compositions are more raga based. Hindustani compositions are shorter than carnatic compositions. Languages sung in Hindustani music include: sanskrit, hindi, braj bhasha, Marathi, Gujarathi, Bengali, oriya, Manipur, Punjabi, kashmir, nepali, urdhu etc. Types of compositions that are sung besides pure classical include: bhajans, abhangs, shabads, ghazals, chaithis, kajris, jhoolas, thumris, dadras, rabindra Sangeet, nazrul geethi, (tappas) ( rarely heard these days) etc.. Pure Hindustani classical include: dhrupads, dhammars, thrivats, chathurangs(rarely heard these days)... Taranas are heard in a Hindustani recital. What we commonly hear today in a Hindustani recital is the "khayal gayaki"... Khayal is an Urdhu word for imagination or idea... "Khayal" came after dhrupad. There are two types of Khayal: "bada Khayal" and " chota Khayal." Bada Khayal" is synonymous with what is known as "Vilambit". " Vilambit" means slow tempo. The " bandish" is taken to sing khayal. A "bandish" is a fixed composition to do improvisation upon. A "bandish" literally means to bind something together. A ""bandish" can be in Vilambit laya(slow tempo), madhya laya(medium tempo) or drut tempo(fast tempo). The "bandish" is taken to do various improvisational techniques such as alaap, bolalaap, bolthaan, behelawa, sargams, taan, etc...This is how a musician/singer shows his/her creativity /mastery in singing one raag for at least 40-50 minutes. It takes years and years of hard work and practice to do this. Both Hindu and Muslim artists perform Hindustani music. All Hindustani compositions don't have to be on God, they can be on radha Krishna Leela, Krishna Leela, seetha ram Leela, shiv parvathi ganesh pariwar, durga Mata, etc... they can be on nature, such as spring season, the sounds of the singing cuckoo bird, the rainy season, the monsoon season, etc... they can be about lovers missing each other, mother-in-law/daughter-in-law issues, etc.. Carnatic music is more prevalent in South India. It is prevalent in Tamil Nadu, Andhra pradesh, Telangana, Kerala, Karnataka and Sri. Lanka. Karnatik music used to be performed in temples in the olden days before it came to common settings. Karnatik music is bhakti based. Karnatik compositions are all on God. Karnatik music is composition based. Karnatik compositions are longer than Hindustani compositions. Carnatic music has what is called "kampitha gamakam," where as Hindustani music does not have this. Karnatik music has the concept of "Thani avarthanam" percussion solo whereas Hindustani music does not have this concept. The " krithi"or"keerthana" is what is taken to do improvisations in carnatic music such as raga alapanai, nerval, and kalpana swarams. A student of Karnatik music learns many compositions before learning how to do improvisational techniques, while a Hindustani student will learn how to do simple improvisational techniques immediately after learning the composition. Other types of compositions in Karnatik music include : geethams, jathiswaram swarajathi, varnams, thillanas, jaavaLis etc..

Not percussion but beats. Beats are necessary I guess? I'm Hindustani classical student and underinformed in carnatic.

Please let me explain. I have learnt both Carnatic vocal and Hindustani vocal. In carnatic vocal, a song can be sung without percussion accompaniment and one can even sing improvisations in carnatic music such as raga alapanai, nerval, and kalpana swarams without percussion without percussion accompaniment if it is for a singing competition or if it is just singing one song. This is because the carnatic vocalist will be putting thala in the hand and keeping track of the thala. If it is instrumental, such as Veena, violin or flute, he/she will be tapping the toe to keep the tala or someone experienced will be be putting the tala and the instrumentalists( Veena artist, flutist, violinist) will be watching that experienced person's thala. if one is singing for a half hour performance or more of carnatic music, or playing the Veena, violin, or flute for more than half an hour, then yes, one would definitely need percussion accompaniment. The performance will not sound good without the percussion along with the vocalist or only the main instrumentalist. In a performance, the raga alapanai is sung without the percussion, this section is between the vocalist or instrumentalist and the violinist. The kalpana swarams section is between the vocalist or instrumentalist and the percussion. And the nerval section is the collaboration of everyone together. Also, each person maintains or keeps their own Tala count in a carnatic recital. And, the whole Tala responsibility is not on percussionist in carnatic music. He is supposed to follow the main artist of the concert, the vocalist or instrumentalist. On the other hand, in Hindustani music, one can't really sing pure Hindustani classical without percussion. It would be kind of difficult to. And doing improvisations without percussion such as alaap, bolalaap, behelawa, boltaan, sargams, taan etc... in Hindustani music would be really difficult. One could probably sing lighter pieces such as bhajans, abhangs, shabads, ghazals, but not pure Hindustani classical without percussion because when singing or playing pure Hindustani classical, the artist depends on the percussion artist to give the correct parts of any particular Tala accurately and to show the parts of any given Tala such as the "Sam" "thali" and "Khali". The percussionist in a Hindustani recital also maintains the laya/tempo and the whole Hindustani recital is actually lead and maintained by the percussionist. I hope this helps.

Thaala/Taal is very important in Carnatic but it's not impossible to sing without it..Alaapana/Alaap is done without any beat

Wowowwww ! If there is one video that can spurt all the spurious facts about carnatic music, it's this. Lots and lots of misinformation about Carnatic music. Her aakaram rendition in Carnatic is rather mocking than actual representation.

Your view of Carnatic music is very reductive and this is often a symptom of knowing very little about the subject. Almost everything you said about Carnatic music is either incomplete or plain wrong. Your commentary also comes across as calling Hindustani music better than Carnatic music. Both styles of music go back many many centuries and it is truly unfortunate how you have chosen to present this comparison in your video. Please educate yourself better on the topic.
